  1. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:43 PM) We will see very soon. Or perhaps not. Manager salaries are not as available as player salaries, we may never know for sure what they are paying him.
  2. Gonzo in the Trib now reporting that Phegley has a ligament tear, and will miss the entire AFL, not just part of it. Blanke to stay on the full term.
  3. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 04:41 PM) Fathom, interested to hear your take? I think he's already posted his take like 7 times. And I agree with his take on it.
  4. Also gotta love the typical hyper reactions on the board. No one knows if he will be a good manager, which by the way isn't much different than if it had been Alomar, for example. Francona and LaRussa were the only candidates talked about who actually managed in the majors, and I suspect they were never really on the table anyway. I'm happy to give Robin a season to see what he brings. Writing off 2012 because of this is just hilariously overreacting.
  5. Whoa. Last year I was saying he'd probably start a coaching career on the South Side at some point, he said he wanted to do that after his kids finished high school. But I was NOT expecting he'd vault straight to manager. The good... he's considered by a lot of people to be very baseball-smart, has leadership qualities, and played the game right. And he knows how the organization works, which is a benefit here. The bad... zero managing experience, as far as I know. That's a little scary. But... Ozzie hadn't managed either, he was a damn base coach before he started. Some folks mentioned handling pitchers... Ozzie didn't know a damn thing about that either, but he ended up being reasonably good at it his first few years, because he leaned heavily on Cooper for input. Ventura is likely to do the same. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) Frank Thomas - hitting coach. Great move! This made my day. This is just your guess, right? Has it been reported somewhere?
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) Summary? Every google result is just a link to the video. I"m working at home today so I could watch it, and I actually recommend you take a few minutes and watch the two videos. Not because of the death penalty aspect, but just because it is a fairly amazing story.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 10:04 AM) It doesn't matter what kind of character she is, if no one pays attention, she goes away. It happens to Ron Paul every four years. Exactly. So why does the right keep doing that? The GOP put her up on a pedestal, thus creating the monster. She then jumped off from that point and kept it going with her books, bus tours, etc. Seriously, it is bizarre to me you think she is a creation of the left. That simply makes no sense.
  8. Two related but seperate thoughts... 1. Undoubtedly the MSM, and the political left, helped keep Palin more in the forefront. But those effects pale in comparison to the effect she added herself by being such a self-designed character. And damn right there was a part of the GOP who helped her along too. Just watch as we wait for her endorsement, which all the candidates will be slobbering over. 2. This primary and caucus oneupsmanship (is that one word?) is so stupid. This could be easily solved. Split the states into, say, 8 primary dates. One every three weeks or so, from January through June. Which states fall into which wave is a rotation that changes each cycle. for the first year, give the historically first states (IA, NH, NV, FL, and a couple others) the January wave in the first year, then that "team" of states moves back to the Feb primary the next cycle, then March, etc. There is no need for all this absurdity.
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 09:05 AM) Interesting. Looks like the crowd broke through a barrier. Saw some pretty bad police tactics in there too though.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 04:04 PM) Is that a friendly mod warning a fellow forums poster request to stop bad posting? Nothing Mod or Admin about it, sorry if that wasn't clear. Purely a poster who has seen a gag grow old, tired, stale, dead, fetid, putrid and finally undead. Please, for all of us, stop the pain.
  11. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 03:22 PM) I knew it, I knew it, I f***ing knew it. LOL, yup, you sure knew it!
  12. 13. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 03:22 PM) http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09...esidential-run/ I knew it, I knew it, I f***ing knew it. You knew what? We heard this same thing about Christie, and he said no. With Palin, it could be yes. You didn't know before, and you don't know now, because there is nothing to know. No doubt she loves the idea of riding into the race on her white horse to save the day, but don't act like you somehow knew something no one else did. My WAG is that its 50/50 if she runs or not. But that is just a guess, like yours.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) We are the 0.000002% doesn't have the same ring to it, does it/ Oh god, now I have "We are the World" stuck in my head. I blame you.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 01:14 PM) Signs are people too, my friend. Well, I guess if a corporation is a person...
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) I also asked him what he thought the payroll would be and he said $120M, said cost-cutting is exagerrated. I think he's way off on that, but we'll see. He said teams will be scared off Ramirez because of the extension. Last couple years of contract could be bad. The quote above did NOT say teams were scared off by the extension. It said he was less movable. That means, in part, that the Sox have no motivation to move him. I think you are reading more into his statement than he intended. Unless there was some other quote we missed?
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 09:39 AM) Bruce Bartlett on the "Regulatory Uncertainty" canard Faulty use of data again. Author is indicating that a lack of directly-related layoffs means it is a non-factor, except we aren't really talking about layoffs. We are talking about a lack of expansion. I can't speak for everyone here, but I've stated over and over again, regulatory uncertainty is absolutely an issue in some specific industries. It is also true that it is not, by a long shot, the biggest reason why expansion isn't occurring at a large enough rate. Lack of demand for goods and services, plain and simple, is the biggest reason.
  18. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 10:04 PM) Yep and just makes it his is the manager, 140-22, next year... and 16-0 in the playoffs. Is there a sentence in there somewhere? Or even an understandable sentence fragment?
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 05:47 AM) His campaign for VP just kicked off . . . With what he said in his speech, I tend to doubt he wants to be a VP. But it is worth noting, if the GOP nomination goes to someone on the more conservative end of things, they will probably look for a VP candidate who is more moderate, looking to use that as help in the general election. Similarly, if a moderate candidate wins the nom, they will look for a tea party type as VP.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 04:56 PM) He also has this problem. (No that's not necessarily a problem. I just wanted to add in that picture.) The last pic cracked me up.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 04:47 PM) He's already taking a beating from the right-wingers for expressing concern over Perry's "n*****head" thing. Gingrich says a lot of stuff that won't help. But he has a unique paring of policy record... he's got a lot of conservative policy points to provide that the right will like, but he also has a history of getting things done with a Dem Prez which appeals to moderates. He's also a known name, and that tends to carry weight with old school GOP'ers. The keys for him are, can he get the funds raised, and can he avoid a Biden-esque verbal screw-up.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 04:39 PM) It was, arguably, the most important thing to get right. And, like the Fin Reg issues, it was very much something they could control. And they screwed it up. Obama has turned out, so far, to be a poor executive (note that I did not say President - I said executive, as being the CEO of the executive branch of government is one aspect of the job).
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) State by state polling shows Herman Cain surging into the lead in West Virginia, North Carolina, and Nebraska, Rick Perry crashing, and Newt Gingrich surging into second or tied with Mittens for 2nd. This is a very fickle polling season so far. Hate to agree with Palin, but Cain is the flavor of the month. Once people get an idea of how ludicrous his ideas actually are, and how his words are going to be very easily twisted because of the nature of his fiery speeches, he'll fade fast. Gingrich though, I think he might have staying power.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 01:21 PM) Oops. http://www.tradersmagazine.com/news/shorti...=tm_xtra_100411 While I 100% agree with you that short selling bans are useless, the methodology of the study is also 100% worthless. Of course the financials with short sale bans went down more than the ones without - if they were chosen to have the protection, they are by nature the weakest links, and furthermore having the ban on them at all signals further weakness. This is a perfect example of invalid interperetation of data. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 01:23 PM) This program was entirely set up and run by this administration, out of TARP funds, with no Congressional input to how it was run. Therefore...this is entirely on them...and it's probably my single biggest issue with them. Their failure here has helped make sure there won't be any housing recovery for a whiel. I'm a fan of this one. No doubt at all, ObamaCo completely screwed the pooch with this program. No one else to blame.
  25. Sox system is one of the worst, though probably not THE worst... that said, Escobar is on no planet the best prospect in the system. The prospect lists put out by the team's marketing area should not be taken to be an actual top prospects list. It serves other purposes. FutureSox will publish our Top 25 again sometime in like November, around the end of AFL.
