  1. I could move posts over, but I'm too lazy. This has been discussed in multiple threads, needs its own. WI legislature finds a way around the quorum requirement, strips out all spending and direct monetary language from the bill, passes it in both chambers as just the strip of collective bargaining rights, stand-alone. Protests are increasing in magnitude again. This is very interesting. I have to say, putting aside for the moment the actual policy initiatives in this... I think this whole exercise has been a fantastic show of the US and state political systems at work. I'm really quite proud of all the protestors, not because I agree with them, but because so many people care this much and actually show it. The whole thing is good for the political soul of the country in the long run.
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:49 AM) Fine, that's what I meant...sorry it got lost in translation here. Its not a big deal, I just don't want people to think I am labeling any political party or movement as stupid, or unintelligent. Its more about attitude and choices, to me.
  3. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) This shows most of us are simply arguing semantics at this point. When people say intelligent vs anti-intelligent, I personally read that as the SAME as smart vs dumb. No one said that either - or at least I didn't. Intellectual is not the same as intelligent, they are two different words with two different meanings. Purposefully ignorant versus anti-intellectual, sure, I'll agree that semantics. But intelligence is a different thing.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:18 AM) With the way you guys have responded i'd agree with elitist part. More importantly, I'm not denying there aren't morons out there, but I dispute that the party/movement is a bunch of unintelligent hillbillies, or that they're any dumber than the left. Never said that, never would. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:28 AM) I don't think calling them anti-intellectual is proper in this case. I know some VERY smart people who are very religious...it doesn't make them anti-intellectual as much as, IMO, it makes the purposefully ignorant, in that they are choosing to "ignore certain things", because, to them, their faith means that much to them. Calling them stupid, IMO, is equally ignorant. To me, purposefully ignorant, and expecting others to be the same, is the same thing as anti-intellectual. That was my point. Its not about smart versus dumb/
  5. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:07 AM) So, you claim he had zero influence, and no control whatsoever? Dubious claim. NPR is NOT balanced, just like Fox isn't balanced...everyone should know that by now, so who cares in either case. Have to agree. I think Fox is probably the king as far as how off from center they are, but no way NPR can be considered free from bias. I personally like NPR better than other networks in some ways, purely because of quality of reporting. They will focus more left, and they have fewer assets and cover fewer things, but are much better at professional journalism.
  6. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 09:01 AM) lol, well, there goes the idea that NPR is a "neutral" news organization. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/03/08...ty-republicans/ I'm not sure anyone really thought NPR didn't lean left. Thing is, some of what he said is true - about the Tea Party and GOP twisting together in a way that amplifies the extremists, and the anti-intellectualism present on the right. But he obviously went over the line labeling the entire party, or movement, as racist.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 9, 2011 -> 07:55 AM) I just pulled up a chain on that, it is 0.22 at 0.25. In other words it is a $250 lottery ticket. That sounds like a lot to you and me, but really for most traders, it is nothing. If something crazy happens, they can make a bunch of money. That's what that is all about. The time allowance plus volatility is worth the $250. A one day spike could easily push that to trading at $500. Yeah, you have to consider that these are derivatives, and so is the philosophy. Its not that the options traders think that $200 oil is likely in the short run, its that they know fear will cause some run-up so they are playing it.
  8. Interesting statistical projection divergence going on in the housing market. On the one hand, looking at continued price declines and looming foreclosures, some have been saying lately there is still substantial, like 20%, downside price risk. On the other hand, mortgage applications last week surged 16% (biggest gain since June), and existing home sales are at an 8 month high. New home sales continue to drop, down 13% last week, which some contend is bad, though I'd say its good. Seems to me that we are still in this general sideways thing. We're more or less at the bottom, unless you want to hunt for that last few %. But we're not seeing much increase in overall market conditions either.
  9. QUOTE (beautox @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 02:59 PM) Does anyone feel because of the brown situation in Philly, CQ gets traded? What would the Sox get, or need, from Philly in exchange?
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 10:08 AM) They really are going to try to work on Teahen at 3rd. He is way more valuable if he can play over there at all. I am interested to see Escobar. Gonzo Trib hinted in an article today that the Angels may be looking at Teahen.
  11. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 09:50 AM) New board up today, March 8th, including the definite destination of Jared Mitchell. He's going to Kanny. As well as Tyler Saladino's injury. Saladino was injured? What did I miss?
  12. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) Is this still the financial news board or the eco hybrid car board? Yes.
  13. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) You seem to like the Boundaries. Yeah, we do BWCA/Quetico pretty often, but usually prefer the Quetico (Canadian) side because its less used. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) can you send that to me too? Will do. By the way, we are rebuilding the site now, entirely new version will be out in a week or two. So the link is a bit stale.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 09:59 AM) Where do you go camping and stuff at? All over. I also run a small not-for-profit for wilderness travel. I'll PM you a link.
  15. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) Unfortunately you're looking in a market that probably won't see a hybrid edition for at least a few years. Jeep had tried a diesel version of the Grand Cherokee but that was discontinued, and all-elecrtic versions were talked about but nothing seemed to materialize. My guess is that for those who are intending to use a Jeep as an offroader just don't care about gas mileage and there is no market for that. Actually there are a number of hybrid SUV's in that size, just not with the 30+ MPG numbers. But really, it needs to be looked at as relative. What does the hybrid version get versus non-hybrid? That's the key math.
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) What did you end up getting? Some of the SUV hybrids don't seem to get much more MPG that I'd even bother...when I think hybrid, I think 28MPG or better (preferably 30+), and some of them I'm seeing 20mpg. To me, 20mpg isn't enough to justify the huge price increase over the gasoline variety, even with the uncertainty of oil prices. I'm hoping that by 2016 or so, SUV hybrid technology advances considerably, gets better MPG and is MUCH more affordable, as that's the next time I'll be in the market for a car. I got the Escape Hybrid, and have been very happy. Depends on the season and other factors, but we probably average 28-30 overall. Can be as high as mid-30's on a tank, or as low as mid-20's. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) Big enough for long road trips, for 3 peoples cloths, canoe, tents, fishing gear, food, odds/ends, etc...basically, as big as a 4 door Jeep, etc. In other words, A REAL sized SUV, not a fake mini-suv like most of those hybrid suv's I'm seeing on these websites. I do not consider, for example, a Jeep Liberty to be a full sized SUV, it's too small and you'd be better off buying a regular car (as they have the same amount of room in them). Also, for me, the SUV has to be an SUV that won't fall apart if I bring it off road (which I do with my Jeep). If it's driven by soccer moms, I'd tear it's axels off in about 5 minutes when I drive off road to get to some of my favorite lakes in Wisconsin that don't have paved roads leading to them. The FEH is not full sized, but I can tell you from doing EXACTLY what you describe (you and I have talked about this before, we do a lot of camping), its been great. 3 people plus gear and a canoe on top works great. 4 people same starts to get cramped, but it can be done. More than that won't work though. We got the AWD model (its auto-AWD, kicks in as needed), and it handles dirt and gravel roads fine, as well as Chicago winters (but also gets a couple clicks less MPG than the FWD model). I wouldn't want to take it offroad entirely though.
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) I looked into some SUV Hybrids the last few days, and any of them worth having are WAY too expensive. The prices on these hybrids have to come down a good 10k before I'll even bother looking again... I have to admit, if the FEH hadn't worked out for us, we probably would have passed on the Hybrid thing this time around. It was the only SUV Hybrid that I found to be reasonably priced. I'm sure that will change over time, but for now, that's a tough market.
  18. QUOTE (SmashROT @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 08:29 AM) You could also look at it from a marketing/promo perspective. Having a minor league in the area would give you another local outlet to market your big league club. Cheap ticket prices encourages families to attend, building interest in the team/players at an early age. I see your point, but if the Sox are contending year in and year out, I don't see much of a threat. The Blackhawks survived the lean years when the Wolves were winning championships. Winning draws. Period. This is actually the reason why they'd want them NOT in the Chicago area. Think of if this way... in the Chicago Metro, you aren't going to create a much larger fan base for the Sox with a minor league team. But in Charlotte, B-Ham, Winston-Salem, etc., where there is no major league team, you have a chance to market to an unaffiliated crowd and grow new Sox fans. They watch TV (ad rev), listen to radio, buy Sox gear, come to Chicago to see games, etc. Basically, you get more bang for your buck out of town, than in it. The real reason to have the team nearby, IMO, is just for ease of travel. Having your AAA team nearby would be helpful in that regard, calling up players last-minute. But really, flights from Charlotte are plenty and short, so its not a big deal.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 5, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) Yeah, I was going to mention I would rather just get a diesel SUV than a hybrid, but I wasn't sure of how the diesel market reacts in comparison to regular gasoline. Diesel will go up and down about the same as normal gas, but with higher standard deviation because its simply a narrower market. So the changes may be more erratic, and supply problems may be magnified.
  20. By the way, if people are ever looking for info on what hybrid cars and SUV's are currently available (also electrics), and what are coming soon, you can use this site. Further, if you go to their SUV section, you will find 16 different hybrid SUV's to choose from now, with more coming each year. Current alt-driven SUV's range in price from 30k to 90k, and from small to large in size. Take your pick. All told, there are about 50 different hybrid and/or electric car/truck/SUV models available now.
  21. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 12:38 PM) Video Apparently Shows Wisconsin Rep Getting Tackled By Officers Watching the video, it looks to me like the guy was in a heated conversation with a cop, then reached into his pocket, and the cop decided something might be a threat so he put him in custody, forcibly. I can't hear the audio so I don't know what happened in the conversation, but whether or not that was a reasonable reaction from the cop might depend on what the exchanged words were.
  22. Got mine last night. Awesomeness. I like the new look of the tix too.
  23. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 10:27 AM) Of course it's a little more than that, but the alternator is what keeps the batteries charged differently than a computer or cell phone battery. Thank you for playing. That's one particular difference, not the whole picture.
  24. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) I AM correct here. I already said it would include SIGNIFICANT loss of charging ability. That would mean the battery isn't working properly...however, they DO have a rating on them to lose X charge per cycle, and that's EXPECTED, and not warranted. Example, if those batteries are supposed to maintain 70% charge after 500 recharges, then that's what they should do, if they fall short of that, they'd have to replace them. Otherwise it's just standard wear and tear, and like with all warranties, it wouldn't cover replacement. Eh? OK to be clear here, I don't have a plug-in car, its a normal hybrid. Yes there are thresholds, but its not based on "cycles" because it can't be. Its based on certain things (charge level being one) falling below certain lines any time within the warranty period. And its a big number for charge level, I can't remember right now, but it was north of 80% for the full term. Remember too, 10 years is longer than most engines last anyway, so there is nothing so awful about these warranties as you are making them out to be.
  25. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 10:14 AM) Would it be smarter for me to invest this money in about a month (I should receive it sometime this month) or would it be best to wait until I am working fulltime after college and putting it into a 401k plan. I am going into a second internship with a company that I really enjoyed working for and I am almost positive that I will leave this summer with a competitive offer so Im wondering if it would be best to wait on investing about a year, and put it into CDs or some stable stock with good dividends. Or is it best to have both accounts to be diverse? I am pretty lost when it comes to investing in mutual funds, ETFs, 401ks, etc, and Im not sure on the tax implications which is why I am asking. So if anybody has some good articles or resources on this matter that would be awesome to have a look at. Im looking to have about 10-11k total to invest after this income and my summer internship (planning on investing atleast 15% of my wages) and I really want to be prepared for when I do so. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 10:19 AM) You wouldn't be able to put your money into a 401k. That is a retirement account that comes through your work place. If you wanted to set up a retirement account on our own, you can contribute a total amount annually to an IRA tax free. Other than that, you will be paying taxes on anything you sell during a calendar year in any other type of account. As SS says, your 401k doesn't work that way. You can't make large bulk contributions to it like that, in fact there is a limit to how much you can put in a year pre-tax. There are catch-up exceptions for being older than a certain age close to retirement. Believe it or not, there are some great free tools on the web for deciding on what funds to invest in. They show risk level, typical term, returns in various time periods, large/small or other biases, etc., sometimes with fun graphics. Heck, Yahoo Finance even has some of that. If you buy a mutual fund in any regular brokerage account, you are taxed on realized gains - that is, closing of positions, or dividends on same-instrument reinvested. If you buy them in an IRA, the gains are protected from taxation until withdrawal, and there are complex rules for withdrawal.
