Tigers sign Victor Martinez 4yr/$50m

QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) I think it's a fairly safe bet that the Sox offer arbitration to both PK and AJ. I'd say 100% they offer to Putz, 80% they offer to AJ, and 50% they offer to PK. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 01:43 PM) Be honest. Do you think that this bill is not a tea party priority? That's sort of like asking, do you think that extending the Bush tax cuts is a priority for this Congress? The answer is both "yes" and "sort of", depending on how you slice Congress or Tea Party. -

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 01:32 PM) Pan meet flash. Read more: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2010/11/18/1039...l#ixzz168Txnx9q Not only is this further showing that divide I was referring to, but its also clearly not Constitutional. They know this of course, and they know it won't pass as an amendment, so that means this is pretty much just for show. What a sad waste of time. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) The red line is inventory, the blue line is year over year inventory. The red line plummetted and then spiked as a result of government policy. The Blue line has been more stable, as it should be, and is creeping upwards. There's no way you can look at the red line since early 2008 and say it has trended downwards at all. And the year over year numbers suggest to me that inventory growth is likely in the near term, which would force prices down further. Also adding here, you contradicted yourself. You pointed out the government action that prompted unnatural traffic in home buying... about a year ago. So, to no one's surprise, the YOY trend will look worse a year out, because of the unusually strong performance a year back. So the YOY trend actually tells you nothing of use.

And the year over year numbers suggest to me that inventory growth is likely in the near term, which would force prices down further. You keep making this something its not. SS2K5 and I were pointing out a RECENT data point, as part of a RECENT set of data points indicating positive direction. You keep harping on 2008, or 2009, or earlier this year. Are you intentionally ignoring what we're saying, and just responding to what you think we'd say? The YOY number is NOT a running average. Its a Year over Year comparison. So using it as a trend is not going to be useful in indicating future results.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 11:48 AM) If that number isn't adequate to make my point...let's also add that year over year inventory is up 10% as well. For the last 2 years, year over year inventory has been negative as the bubble-built homes have been cleared out. The glut of houses on the market is actually growing, not shrinking. And this is not a shadow inventory effect. Inventory was at 13 months at one point this year, and its under 10 now. So no, its not growing right now - it was growing earlier this year.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 10:51 AM) If the rumors have any bit of truth to them, then I'm happy that it appears we have some money to spend. That's the good news part of this - the 3/48 number is obviously inaccurate, but the fact that the Sox took a shot at all means they have some money to spend. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 11:18 AM) There are still more than 10 months of supply in the currently available market, with more waiting in the shadow market. Typically, prices are stable when there are about 6 months of supply available. There is still a glut of housing that can't be sold at current market rates. I agreed with you until the "can't be sold at current market rates". The pickup in activity says otherwise. And no one is saying the market is healthy or good. Just that its showing signs of coming back to life, slowly. And in the case of housing market, slowly is probably better than quickly.
-
3Q GDP change revised up to 2.5% from 2%. October home sales dropped 2.2%, but that was expected after a ridiculous 10% gain last month. People in the sector seem to be feeling more confident that activity is reliably off from the bottom now, and see a strengthening 2011.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) Any chance SOX just bluffed to get the price up so Tigers can sign Martinez but lose out on Dunn ? No way. First I really doubt they made an offer anything like that. Second, if they did, they'd have to know there was a good chance the bluff would be called, so that wouldn't make any sense. -
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 10:05 AM) My gut says this is the North trying to provoke the south into attacking so the NK government can say on all their state run media how evil south korea is. I doubt it. First, the NK government already does that constantly, they don't need an attack to do it. Second, while they want the new gov't to look tough, they don't want an SK attack while the transition is going on.

Zero chance the Sox offered V-Mart 48/3. Zero. QUOTE (Sockin @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) Today. Yeah, I decided to actually create a pinned thread after I looked up the dates, since people ask a lot. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 09:25 AM) You have more faith in the American public than I do apparently. I'm saying if you ask 10 random people to describe a tea party member, you'll get something along the lines of "extreme GOP member" or Palin supporter, etc. Well that might be true - but what you just said is very different than what you said earlier. -

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 09:20 AM) Victor Martinez on the verge on signing with the Tigers. Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal Serrano reports that Martinez's deal with Tigers will be for four years, $50 million, and that team outbid #RedSox, #WhiteSox, #Orioles, KW trying to get away from AJ, who I think is the backup plan here. What day is the deadline to offer Arb? -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) I think you'd agree though that if you polled 10 people on the street, the majority would dismiss tea party members as either racist/homophobic/crazy christian/etc. Libertarian or "people just pissed at the size of government and the amount of spending by the government" is not what comes to mind, despite being the key message of the various rallies. Well this is just silly. First of all, I've seen polls recently that indicated better than 50% of the country consider themselves supporters of the Tea Party to one degree or another, so that's 5 people right there who wouldn't say that. Then there are people who are actually educated enough to not just put everyone into an extreme category. I'd be shocked if more than 1 or 2 out of 10 said anything like that. -

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 08:24 AM) http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/11/2...dex.html?hpt=T1 In some ways, you wish the succession in North Korea was complete. Because we would probably have a clearer idea of what we are dealing with. Is the new regime going to be hell bent on provocation and war? Or is this just trying to show strength to maintain strength of leadership in the ruling family? Or NK is tired of having the world respond to their nuclear stuff with a collective yawn.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 08:19 AM) well Balta is right, there aren't a whole lot of Libertarian Democrats. The Libertarian crowd is really not a reliable GOP vote - They are independents and in fact, the ones I know who really are Libertarians, often voted 3rd party or even Dem a lot in the past decade because the GOP abandoned fiscal discipline. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 08:13 AM) 4. The Libertarians really aren't that much of the "Tea Party", which is basically just the activist wing of the Republican Party anyway, and they make very little noise electorally because they're going to turn out to vote every time anyway and they're not voting for Democrats. Your bolded phrase I already said, and the rest of your post is basically left-wing talking points that aren't very accurate. So please don't co-opt my list. Like the Alien Trilogy, I refuse to acknowledge anything after #3. -

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 23, 2010 -> 08:03 AM) Good for the Libertarians. Really surprised it took so long for them to speak up. I'm guessing we didn't hear much about it from them for multiple reasons... 1. They quickly became the minority in their own movement, so they were drowned out 2. The media didn't find that story nearly as interesting as making it out to be some kind of revolution, which is way sexier. Now its way sexier to find division in said movement. 3. These libertarian types probably were happy to use the co-opting to get their folks in office in some places, but now they want to make sure they get what they wanted out of them. -
So, the inevitable has begun. The Tea Party, having realized they were co-opted by the Republicans generally (and more specifically, by the Christian Coalition crowd), is starting to show that it's two distinct groups of people. The more Libertarian crowd is complaining about it. And hilariously, read what head co-opter Jim DeMint had to say... LOL, even for a Congressman, that's an impressively loose justification for saying small government equals big government. How do people see this and not laugh? But hey, keep it up Jim. The economy is still in the tank and you plan to make this about social issues? Good luck with aaaaaaaaaallll that.
