  1. Supposedly, the Sox are looking at potentially signing Miguel Olivo.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 08:37 PM) I have a feeling Drake is going to beat Iowa State tonight...NOT! Not only is Hoiberg going to be a great coach, but Lutz was the perfect hire as his assistant. I agree, Freddy is going to be a very good coach. He's a smart guy, and he is a guy who just knows the game at a level that other ex-players don't. I also like his approach so far. I'm psyched for this new era to begin at Iowa State. I still remember Freddy making me look stupid on the court way back when, but also, I remember how great a guy he was. I'd root for any ISU coach, but having known Freddy personally, I'm really getting back into the team this year.
  3. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 09:40 PM) Two cults enter, one cult leaves....... Westboro Baptist crazies picketing the Dearborn Islamic Center, on 11/18. Oh boy. You seriously are putting the religion of Islam in the same category as the Westboro idiots? Cults? This after your recent posts extolling the virtues of racial profiling. I don't know how you expect anyone to react to your posts with anything but disdain, if this is the best you can do.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) Almost all of those sound like Bill Clinton honestly. Only the lying part.
  5. QUOTE (chimpy2121 @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) Virgina @ MINN: Minnesota Iowa @ WF: Iowa I don't know anything about Iowa, but WF is garbage. GT @ NW: Northwestern OSU @ FSU: OSU This might get ugly. Michigan @ Clemson: Michigan UNC @ Illinois: Illinois Indiana @ BC: Boston College NC State @ Wisconsin: Wisconsin NC State has some good freshmen though. Purdue @ Va Tech: Va Tech Maryland @ Penn State: Maryland MSU @ Duke: Duke It's a down year again for the ACC. Iowa lost at home to South Dakota State.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 07:02 AM) ^^^ I beasically limited mine to beers I felt were distributed widely enough that any poster would have had a chance to try it. I could see saying that they should be beers available in the Chicago area - but of course, most beers are, even the ones that you don't find at the corner bar. Using that rule, I'd have to eliminate one beer from my list, but that's it.
  7. Back on topic, I just wanted to point out that the Mayor, the IL Senate President, the IL Speaker of the House and the Governor are all White Sox fans. I'd like to think that won't matter on this, but, it might. For that matter, POTUS is a Sox fan. Our diabolical plan to take over the world appears to be on track.
  8. QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 07:15 PM) i'm really sick of this response - especially in the offseason. If you've already seen the info, don't read it. Done. Well, part of the problem is that the Dark Lord of SoxTalk closed the Diamond Club, and one of the three places was in there. Another was in the MLB catch-all, which moved over here. Then there is this thread. OK now that I'm done making fun of the man, I'll also point out that I never, ever respond to posts with things like "this is stupid" or "Why post this" - I only point out when things are already discussed elsewhere, so that we don't have it going in three threads. Otherwise we get a board that's really hard to read. This isn't going to change, this is something we do here.
  9. Jeez, I didn't realize I was starting a long discussion about cops.
  10. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 06:53 PM) I'm gonna high five myself. Meanwhile, would it make sense to redo this as top 10 breweries? I think the best idea is just to publish the list, but also add on a list of all the other beers that received votes even if they don't make the top group. Then open it up for discussion.
  11. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Damn, I think i pwned myself back there. That's what happens when i try to work and post at the same time. Anyway....yes, there is a video of tsa 'searching' a 3 year old who is scared and screaming while they do it, and parents not doing anything out of fear of arrest. profiling by itself it not so good. Profiling accompanied by other methods, good. Why is it bad to select certain people who lok a certain way for extra scrutiny? Why the need to spend extra time on a 3 year old and less on someone of perhaps Muslim origin, just to appear to be non-profiling? Just look around at other incidents that have happened. That guy who shot up the military base, Nadal, was spouting off some things that should have caused people to take a closer look at him. But everyone was afraid of being accused of Islamophobia, so nobody did anything. In a world where a second grader can point his finger at someone and go 'bang', then be expelled because they think he is a serial murderer-in-waiting, we can't look twice at the person in Islamic garb, even though most terrorism seems to come from people that might wear such garb? We can't look closer at the jittery guy in line because he happens to look arabic, don't want to offend anyone, so let's give the 80 year old lady the once over instead, just to assure our Muslin friends that we are not profiling anyone. You wanna do these scanner, first have to make it so that there is ZERO chance that anyone can ever get those pictures off the machine. Because if there is a way, someone will find it and manipulate it to their gain or pleasure. But stop the security-theater, it wastes time, wastes resources and is just a waste, period. You are describing isolated cases of reverse racism, or maybe better put, people who are too PC in the name of fear. And what you seem to be describing as profiling, is different than what others are calling it. Your version of profiling is to look for specific signals - like saying strange things, behaving oddly, etc. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. What others are referring to as profiling is racial or religious profiling, which is morally repugnant and also patently ineffective.
  12. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 04:59 PM) I tried to avoid putting more than a few craft beers on my list of 20 b/c I figured nobody is going to have the same ones then. I tried to keep it to fairly popular beers that you can find just about anywhere (but not Miller, Coors, Bud, etc.) I don't get that. I figured it was my favorite beers, not my favorite beers that can be found at 7-11.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) Maybe they had you take metal off because you were also going through a metal detector, but the explosives scanners work without removing your shoes. My guess is that the market for a combined machine is going to be limited since most places will already have metal detectors in place. OK, so why all the body scanners and puffer machines? Why not just a metal detector, followed by the explosive scanner? And why, in that model, do shoes have to come off? I feel like I must be missing something obvious, because it seems to me this technology set already exists.
  14. The Constitutional argument here really doesn't exist, as there is no protected right being violated. You can volunteer to not be scanned, and get the pat down instead. Now, if the pat down goes too far, then you might run into issues not Constitutional, and more simply rule of laws. In any case, I agree with the premise that the terrorists truly have won here. Further, I cannot believe we haven't been able to create a scanner for both metal AND explosives, or hell even just thought to put the two one after the other and run through both. I did one of those stupid puffer machines previously, but you STILL have to take off your shoes and all metal to use it, so what's the point?
  15. This has now been covered in three threads.
  16. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 09:39 AM) A machine gun??? Did they think Al-Qaeda broke into the house? SHEESH! Well, technically, it was a sub-machine gun, if I'm write that it was an MP5. Still though, does seem like overkill.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) Holy crap! That seemed a bit excessive on their end but better safe than sorry I guess. Yeah, I felt the same way. Good to know they respond that quickly, but I think 8 cops and tactical equipment may have been a bit of an overreaction, unless they get there and find there really is a burglary in progress. That was a much bigger response than I've seen before for similar calls.
  18. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 06:23 PM) That's extremely dangerous IMO. Imagine what an injury to Putz or Thornton plus Santos having some second year struggles does to our pen. It costs us games, and lots of them, until Kenny can find a way to overpay for someone else's reliever. And those prices are very high. The best idea is to not ever count on some minor leaguer who has proven nothing like Bellamy and Infante (edit: who doesn't look like some phenom, which they certainly don't). If one of those guys are going to get in they should have to force themselves in. Putting Linebrink anywhere but the very back of the bullpen is a huge mistake. He needs to be that weakest link that a Bellamy or Infante would try to replace. We need talent pushing those guys back. If we win anything in 2011 we'll still have to do it with pitching and defense, so we should try to assemble that team. Just this time don't be idiotic about the DH position and that huge gaping hole in the lineup where a lefty bat used to sit. I don't disagree that its risky, and its not perfect. But with limited resources, I'd rather put more into the truly gaping holes.
  19. Had something happen last night that I just had to share... My wife comes home with our daughter, walks in and says there was a guy opening and then crawling into a window of an apartment in the building next door. Dude was wearing a hoodie, she couldn't really make out what he looked like. We've had some break-ins (mostly to vehicles) in the area lately, so after some debate, I decide to call the cops to have them check it out. I figure, probably, the guy lives there and forgot his keys, so worst case, he gets a knock at the door, shows an ID, and is embarrased. No big deal. Or not. So about 2 minutes after I called 911, I see the first squad pull up outside on the street. Two cops get out in a hurry, and another squad shows up. I'm thinking, wow, quick response time. Good to know. First cops, driver throws the keys to the other cop, who goes and opens the trunk. Um... no, he isn't, is he? Yup. Comes out with a machine gun, looks like an MP-5 probably, goes running towards the building. Oh s***. So I go put my daughter and wife in a room that doesn't have any windows facing that building, and then go back to the front. Now there's like 5 squad cars and about 7-8 cops running around, doing a perimeter, blocking the street, etc. All this for a possible break-in. Neighbors have now come outside and started looking around, trying to figure out what's going on. A couple minutes, later, my door buzzer goes off. Its a cop, they said it was just a neighbor who forgot his keys. I'm sure he got a good scare. I told my wife I wanted to go apologize, but she doesn't want me even acknowledging to them that we called. I apologized to the cops, they said not to worry about it, they'd rather we call, etc. Well, at least I know the cops will respond quickly and decisively to a call, if there's a real emergency in the future.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 08:07 AM) And you don't think you can say the same thing about getting rid of the deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, health insurance, etc.? Sure I can, to varying extents. What's your point? Did I ever say otherwise?
  21. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 10:58 PM) well that part is bulls*** Yeah that's a garbage idea. Any savings you get there would clearly be offset by other economic damage.
  22. Putz back is good. If Jenks will take a cheap deal, great. But I doubt he will, and I am not even sure the Sox will offer. Putz closing, with Thornton and Santos setting up, isn't too bad. Linebrink will still be there, plus a LOOGY from the scrap heap more than likely. That leaves two open spots (if Putz re-signs). I'd love to see one of them go to Infante/Bellamy, and have a good long man for the other slot, but I'd be open to Jenks there instead of I/B, if Jenks would sign for like $2M or less. Basically, if they can sign Putz, I feel decent about the pen. I'm much more concerned with C, 1B, DH and RF (or whatever combo occurs there).
  23. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) Wow, you all sure get twisted about Sarah Palin pretty easy. Yeah, I despise her too, but really, I could care less if she has exaggerated her fishing resume. Seriously, the word irrelevant fails to cover how useless this information is. I'm a lot more concerned that she has shown to be stunningly ignorant on history, polciy, jurisprudence and how the law and the Constitution work, than I am any of this noise.
  24. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) Until we start allocating legitimate funds towards the draft, will continue to flounder. Though I will concede that at least regards to first round picks, and only first round picks, we seem to have turned a corner. My apologies. Thought you were a minor league homer. Well, I think the drafts overall in the past 3 years were much improved, and not just the first round. You have to remember that 2008 netted people like Dan Hudson, and that 2009 had three very good picks at the top but all of them had injury issues in 2010, which was a problem. I tend to be less over the top in my anger, or my elation, at the minor league system, than many. People like to categorize minor leaguers into high end can't-miss or non-prospects, when in reality most players are in between. Even a very thin White Sox system still has some guys that I think are worth watching. But this is definitely a weak system, especially since the 2008 and 2010 first rounders shot straight through the system and aren't in it anymore.
  25. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 02:22 PM) Red, white, or blue? The white (Cinq Cents) made my list and is one of my all time favorite beers. knight is going to chew us out if we keep divulging our picks prematurely. Red for me, at least over the blue anyway. But I've never had the white! I don't think we're unduly giving anything away here.
