QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 10:28 PM) There's a serious paper coming out on methane hydrate destabilization in tomorrow's Science. Here's the NSF press release version. Read the press release version. That sounds kinda bad.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) Milton Bradley finds the true reason he played badly last year. http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=4965307 I realize that the Cubs made a lot of mistakes with Bradley, but... Sorry Milton, this is 90% on you.

3/4 GAME THREAD: Spring Training Game ONE
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in 2010 Season in Review
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 02:59 PM) I'll definitely have to DVR this. Is there ANY chance Jordan Danks is ready this year? EDIT: Nevermind, sub .700 OPS in AA last year. I'd call that number highly deceptive. This is what happened... --He tore up A+ in his first significant minor league stop last year, putting up a .934 OPS. --He got to B-Ham AA and started hot, but was then injured and missed some time after struggling with it --He came back from injury, and played very well in the AFL He's not ready most likely, but don't let that number you used tell you anything terribly useful. The key thing for him is getting the K numbers down, right now. -
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 01:11 PM) Bill in the House of Representatives: Prohibit schools from restraining and isolating students and creating undue physical or mental abuse on the students except for cases of imminent danger. Out of 170+ Republican Congressional Representatives, 145 voted against this measure. So in the last six months, we have 75% of the Republican delegation of the Senate voting against the right of rape victims to confront their attacker in court, if a government contract is involved - and now we have over 80% of the Congressional GOP caucus voting against a prohibition of restraint and physical abuse in schools when defined as "restraints that restrict breathing or compromise a student's health or safety." Just thought you should know. http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/roll082.xml I've given up trying to think (or hope) that the GOP caucus in Congress hasn't been taken over by the extremists. I am sure there are some Republicans who have a brain cell or two left. But I've become convinced that unfortunately, the majority of them (in Congress), have fully bought into the craziness that is the far right of the party. Its all the more frustrating to watch, since I truly don't believe that the majority of GOP'ers in the general public are this extreme.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) might as well figure out early if Jones still has it in the outfield. I'm down with that. The whole lineup screams of "guys we want to get a good look at early". -

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 12:07 PM) So, a state senator from California was arrested last night in his state provided SUV and was driving drunk. That's sad and a problem, but not really news to me. Until this came out about it. The State Senator is Roy Ashburn. He was a "family values" proponent and opposed to gay rights. He had an "unidentified male companion" in his car with him. The media is reporting he left a bar called "Faces" that night. "Faces" is the biggest gay bar in Sacramento. So I hope he's fully outed for the big old gay hypocrite that he really is. http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/...ore.php?ref=fpa What posesses people to do this? I mean, not the drunk driving (which is bad enough), but crusading against their own interests? Its just fully bizarre to me.

First Spring Training game of the year! TV is MLB Network on tape delay at 10 pm, radio is WSCR ahem... let's see if I can still do this... GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!
-
I don't even know what you guys mean by "interactive" game. Do people send in questions online or something? Is this on the WSCR website?

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 11:43 AM) Yes. Haven't been through the whole thread. If you mean TCQ plus some highly touted prospects, AND if one of the outfield prospects we have starts looking good in AAA this season and is close to ready (D2 for example), then I'd say its worth considering.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) Jim, the place looks like it's going to be freezing in April. Its in Minneapolis - anything they did that didn't involve a roof is going to be freezing in April.

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) I don't post very often, and I realize what I'm going to propose could be ridiculous, but here goes. What about building a package around Quentin for Gonzalez? Does that make any sense? From our point of view, it seems like its a lot easier to find a corner outfielder than a LH all-star 1B.... thoughts? You mean like the person 4 posts before you suggested?

Sox Rank #9 by James in "Young Talent Inventory"
NorthSideSox72 replied to Marty34's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) Well, Mayo's ranking aren't his own, he just polls the opinions of scouts. But you're right, a better way to do it would be to aggregate the top 50's from all of the respectable publications. Then again, maybe James has gone back and looked at the previous rankings and found Mayo to be the most accurate. Well, that's a good start. But what I was really getting at was using the Top 50 at all. 50 prospects means something like 1.7 per team - the variance will be wild in terms of a percentage of that, so using it to measure the quality of a minor league system is highly flawed. You need to either use more depth (like a Top 500 or something), or alternately use a rating system and add decliing values per grade per system, or use subjective evaluation from scouts. Any of those would be better than simply using an overall Top 50 for baseball like that. -
The 2010 DH Slot -- What it is, what it isn't

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 07:32 AM) If the White Sox pitching staff lives up to expectations and White Sox hitters hit significantly fewer home runs, when the books like BP come out next season, USCF won't be thought of as the launching pad its been considered the past 7 or 8 years. That can be easily corrected for in analysis. -
The 2010 DH Slot -- What it is, what it isn't
NorthSideSox72 replied to CyAcosta41's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 4, 2010 -> 07:23 AM) Whether Kotsay, Jones and Vizquel actually DH 100% or not, and they will obviously play the field, the bottom line is a bench-quality player will be in the line-up daily. It blows my mind White Sox fans are so opposed to guys who pretty much strickly DH and prefer older players who can't play every day anymore in the line up every day. This is a team that has employed 3 of the greatest DH only-type players in the history of the game. Another thing to consider, there's a lot of talk about Minnesota moving outdoors so they will lose their home field advantage, like the other team is playing in perfect conditions. What about the White Sox home field advantage? We have seen over the past years that they have played pretty well at home with a line up of sluggers. Will they lose their advantage? The years they hit less than 200 homers they really struggled, but of course, they were built to hit homers. One thing that will occur. In most of the publications, USCF will become a much more pitcher friendly park in 2011. what? -
Sox Rank #9 by James in "Young Talent Inventory"

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Mar 3, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) Here how the prospect scores were devised: The article was very interesting and one of the few things on Bill James' site worth reading, here's the direct link: http://www.billjamesonline.net/ArticleCont...Code=James01009 So, the prospect score was based on who you have in one person's top 50 prospect list? Doesn't that seem like an absurdly narrow evaluation method? -
Dodge/Chrysler cars generally get bad gas mileage, finish near the bottom of quality lists, and the company itself may not survive long. Also, every Chrysler/dodge product I've driven (usually rentals) have really bad sightlines for the driver. It is probably the last brand I'd ever look to buy.

The 2010 DH Slot -- What it is, what it isn't

QUOTE (Ranger @ Mar 3, 2010 -> 04:01 PM) That's nto a sure thing. The only sure thing is that it would make you feel better going into the season if they had someone else. Wouldn't it make you feel better as well, as a fan? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) I would expect Kenny to be looking at guys who could be squeezed from rosters without options if both of those guys don't do well in the spring. Do we even have any lefties like that, aside from those two?
-
Here's a thought... with the only LOOGY names being thrown around being Williams and Threets, who aren't exactly great in terms of track record... I think there's an outside chance that Charlie Leesman pulls a Boone Logan and slides in there. That is, if Williams and Threets both struggle.

The 2010 DH Slot -- What it is, what it isn't
NorthSideSox72 replied to CyAcosta41's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Wow, nice entrance. By the way, if Viciedo and Flowers have good seasons this year in AAA, I think 2011 we'll see some better potential from that slot. If Retherford is on the team in a utility role in 2011, you can feel comfortable making Flowers your DH for some of the time, while relieving AJ occasionally, and have Viciedo be your 1B of the future. -
Eddie Bauer makes some nice jeans, for relatively cheap. I've never tried Banana Republic for jeans - I've bought a couple shirts there that wrinkle as soon as you put them on, so, no thanks. Too high maintenance.
