2010 Chicago White Sox Spring Training

QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 11, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) We should have traded Bobby when we could have. Overreact much? He's got a sore calf, in early March. This is really not anything to get upset about. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 11, 2010 -> 10:39 AM) Eddie Guardado was released by the Nat's. I wouldn't be suprised if the Sox take a look. Williams has looked fine so far in ST, so I really doubt it. If the Nats are releasing him, I don't think its likely the Sox will find him to be a better alternative than Williams or Threets.

Joe Nathan likely out for the season

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) This is the Minnesota Twins. Every time someone goes down, they bring someone up who does just as well. Is this a huge loss, sure? Is some no-name AAA reliever going to come in and play well? Probably. As good as Nathan? Come on now. The chances of some nobody coming in and being as good as Nathan are exceedingly slim. The Twins aren't some magical beast that blows unicorns capable of closing games out of its ass. They are a baseball team. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 03:42 PM) Swell. The only types I'd trust less with a pension plan than Daley. Funny, I'd trust them far and above most government bodies. They'd still fall under the same regulations, only be able to work more effectively within those rules.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 03:22 PM) fugz=fugly=f***ing ugly OK, fugly I get. Still funny.
-
Daley today announced that a controversial plan to overhaul the city's pension plans is going to be unveiled. He apparently hired some high end financial industry folks to study options to come up with something more viable, and wants to go that route. I'm no big fan of Daley's, but I will say that he's been doing some pretty shrewd things financially in the last year or two.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) Becuz ladiez over 30 is teh fugz! I don't even know what "fugz" means, but I LOL'd anyway.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 10:03 AM) Apparently: The transition will occur only if you have no brokerage or investment accounts at all at E*Trade. If you do, your savings account stays there. Otherwise, customers with savings accounts will be summarily moved over. I see. That explains why mine was moved - my brokerage is elsewhere.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 11:48 AM) Oh, I think Quinn can lose. If it's a 'cut spending' vs 'more taxes' choice, 'cut spending' will likely win. I expect the election to be all about the economy and financial issues, not social issues. You are right about the economy and spending issues being the big issues, no doubt. But here's the thing - both candidates know that it will take both cuts and tax increases to get things whole in any reasonable period of time. Just cuts would either be devastating, or very slow to get us back to where we need to be. That said, I think the right cuts, over a period of years, could do a lot of good. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) Not to mention ethics is going to be a big issue for a lot of people. I think they are sick of their state being a joke on late night TV. That too - so watch for anything in the way of dirt on either one, because if there is something there, we'll find out about it.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 10:46 AM) I think it just shows that in the wake of ultimate destruction (Chernobyl), nature will not only forget about us, but it will do everything in it's power to wipe any memory of us, too...and in a very short time in the grand scheme of things. I think it's fascinating. This is why I'm never worried about mother nature or the Earth in general. Humans don't care about climate change for the sake of the Earth, they care about it for the sake of themselves. We, as a race, don't like to admit that when the Earth decides to give up on us, there will be nothing we can do about it...and shortly thereafter, it will have forgotten about us all together. I'm sure it calms the fears of many that if you drive a few less miles a year or go "green", you're doing your part and helping...but in the end, one super volcano, one asteroid, or one little virus is going to hit the reset button for the Earth, and then it'll all start over a couple of eons later. I personally find that cool, albeit dark. I read somewhere recently that they did some survey work around the Trinity Site in New Mexico (site of first atomic bomb detonation), as well as looking at some of the ranch land nearby. The land at the Trinity site is now in substantially healthier condition than the land being grazed by cattle that wasn't nuked.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 12:49 PM) 3 cuts today. Catchers Miguel Gonzalez and Josh Phegley, and OF Jared Mitchell were reassigned to minor league camp. 52 left in camp. Not very exciting cuts - none of those guys were ever intended to make the team this year. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 09:53 AM) 1.35% is still very good for savings accounts, which is why I have it there -- and for convenience of it being linked to my other E*Trade accounts, I login to one account and have access to all 3, makes stock buying easier when I do it. I'll be curious to see how your situation changes with the Discover thing, in terms of linking accounts.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 09:25 AM) You f***ers used to be a lot better about providing ST pictures. I used to go every spring, and post pics here from the games that I took, but I'm not able to get down there this year. I guess you'll just have to Google for some professional ones. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 08:22 AM) As long as it remains linked to my Etrade account and continues to pay interest, I don't care who owns it. heh QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 09:06 AM) I have a Schwab account - what's your interest rate? I'm wondering if I should park my savings there instead (my regular savings has a not-too-bad rate) With the move of the accounts to Discover, the current rate is now 1.35%. It was as high as 5% at one time with E-Trade, when the markets were running wild, so that gives you an idea of the bounds it will work within. But in the case of Discover, I don't know if they will increase it the way E-Trade did. So I'll be shopping around at other rates now, to see if anyone is significantly higher.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 07:55 AM) The guy totally lost his spine when it came to ethics reform and he hasn't done anything to fix the massive deficit. Those are pretty much the only two things he needs to work on, and he hasn't done a thing worthwhile on either one. The ethics reform was indeed a disaster. The deficit issue, he's actually pushing for more work in that direction now than the legislature or others are. Problem is, he didn't start doing that at first, he's just getting to it now.

STL CIN CHC MIL PIT HOU

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 10, 2010 -> 07:52 AM) To be fair that is pretty much how Quinn has governed. You know, he's not been as bad as I thought he'd be. Of course, my expectations were very low. I really with McKenna had won the GOP nod, he has the profile of a guy that could win the general in Illinois.

wish we could go find this guy again...

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 11:55 PM) Bryan Myrow is 33 years old and has a career AAA line of .313/.423/.528/.951 Jason Botts is 29 years old and has a career AAA line of .299/.398/.540/.938 Also, Myrow was an independent league sign-on at age 24, and wasn't Botts a former high round pick who is considered to have a nice tool set? -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 11:17 PM) http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_con...linois_governor I know this is basically irrelevant, but the fact that any poll anywhere at any time has Brady 10 up on Quinn shocks me. Even with the Illinois government in the mess it's in. Brady will fall back with Illinoisans see what he's stood for previously. I actually researched the GOP candidates because I voted in the GOP primary, and Brady scares me a bit. He's extreme by national standards, and more so for Illinois. Quinn would have to really, really, really step in the s*** between now and November to lose to Brady.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 11:19 PM) I agree with her though. As it stands now the media continues to follow the horserace, I guarantee that as soon as they pass it the media switches to "here's what's in the bill that we should have told you about months ago but continued to follow death panel threats and government takeover statements to appear balanced" That's not a reason to agree with Pelosi, whose point in this case is vapid and obnoxious. Vote for it to see what's in it? Seriously? That's a load of crap, no matter what you think of the bill or its parts. What this is, is a reason to be frustrated with the media.
-
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) Bigger banks also tend to offer better online banking and bill payment options, too. I have a checking account for nothing but bills/spending money -- my ATM is attached to it. My savings is in my Etrade account, as well as one of my IRAs and my brokerage account. Not anymore - E-Trade sold their savings accounts to Discover. I know because I had one, and just got the info in the mail.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) Mouton played in the bigs for several years. If Gartrell does the same, he should consider himself fortunate. Yeah, like I said, not making a qualitative assessment here - I don't know enough about him to do that, one way or another. Just saying I think the org is high on him.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) Gartrell seems like Lyle Mouton Part II. I'm not saying he's good - I'm saying I just get the impression that the Sox like him.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 04:00 PM) It will be Nix no doubt. I like Retherford a year or two from now, depending how he hits in AAA as he wasn't too good in the fall league. Hopefully we see Nix improve at SS/3B though. I like De Aza if Pierre gets hurt though. I think if Gartrell hits well in AAA in 2010, he gets a call-up before De Aza does. I've heard noises through some of the Sox' trumpeters that make me think they like Gartrell more than most non-team people do.
-
QUOTE (The Baconator @ Mar 9, 2010 -> 03:49 PM) I think it'll most likely be Nix because he has more versatility than CJ. De Aza will be interesting to watch as the injury-replacement OFer. While I agree it would probably be Nix, I don't get the idea that he has more versatility than Retherford. I'd in fact say the opposite. The reason for Nix is that CJ has not been above AA, Nix is a known commodity who can hit a little bit in the majors, and CJ's not on the 40 (as Kalapse eluded to previously).
