QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) Does that count teh metropolitan areas though? Now that I see the cities, I can tell you no, it does not.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) I would love an off-season in which we signed Byrd and Matsui. I'd be fully content with that. Or Crisp and Matsui. Either scenario is good for me.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) I agree with this... For the most part, Cub fans are... well I don't want to get banned so I'll just say that Cub fans are "emotionally challenged". I bet it's no picnic playing in the outfield at that dump of a ballpark with a bunch of... "highly intoxicated fans" yelling at you. I think it would be a much better situation at the Cell. Protect him for media d bags that try to start and keep the drama going, and Milton would do just fine on the Southside. First, how do you propose to "protect him" from the media? That is virtually impossible. And this is Chicago, its a big and sometimes tough market to play in as an athlete. He'd be skewered constantly, by media and fans, and his history tells us there is almost no chance he would handle that well. Second, even as a die-hard Sox fan, I recognize that the fans at the park can be very abrasive difficult on certain players at times, including their own. The Cell isn't some magic kingdom where all fans are friendly and nice to all players. The South Side is not a place where players can hide in obscurity.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 03:19 AM) Anybody excited for Avatar? The trailer looks decent, Im hoping its good though. It looks to me like 2 hours of a video game. I think as a film, it will be terrible. But it will look and sound cool.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) "Decision was made before incident." riiiiight. Dropping one of the most popular athletes of this generation just for the heck of it. The report of this was published in business journals around Thanksgiving. So, yes, it appears it is right - the decision was made before this stuff surfaced. -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 9, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) ...to add to this. I say this because they outright show it. They run on Platform A, which says if X happens, we need to do Y. The people agree...the people vote for that person, but then when that persons in office and X happens, they do Z instead. There is no accountability in the government anymore. There was a time that if you ran on Platform A but got elected and enacted Platform B, there would have been hell to pay...now it doesn't even matter. People have such short term memories, you can say whatever you want while campaigning and just do whatever you want after you win. This is the primary problem - PEOPLE, the voters, as a group, mostly don't give a crap, don't keep track of what is going on, and when they do track their representatives, its usually just reacting to some absurdist email that's been forwarded 20 times. Its a lack of involvement among the citizenry. And that is a lot less the problem of the people in Congress, and more about us (the voting public).

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 08:55 PM) It looks like a damn Arctic Sahara out there. Did ISU cancel classes? In my years there, they only cancelled classes once - and it was for an ice storm that coated everything in sight. Never closed for snow or cold, and I'll tell ya, it got really frickin' cold a few times.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 05:10 PM) Do you think that Indy could be considered for a MLB team? Its been discussed on the board before, but I can think of at least 7 or 8 cities that would make better cases for an MLB team than Indy could. Not happenin'.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 12:58 PM) Is it $1.5M? Because I've seen $1M just about everywhere else. From the Trib. But I don't know how they do the cash allocation over time.

QUOTE (KevinM @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 12:36 PM) I don't really think anyone is arguing that BABIP is a good statistic in isolation. Don't make up an argument to dispute. Kind of like jumping into the middle of a discussion and telling someone not to do something (which they didn't do anyway)?

The Sox got $1.5M from the Royals as an offset. So the yearly money is either this (if front-loading the cash): $2.25M in 2010 (arb) $4.75M in 2011 (arb) $5.5M in 2012 (FA) Or this (if spreading over time): $3.25M in 2010 (arb) $4.25M in 2011 (arb) $5M in 2012 (FA)

Note the phrase "would have" on the Quentin part, but ambiguous as to tense on the Jenks part. Key parts there.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 07:44 AM) And because labor makes by FAR the most money in any company, it isn't even close. Thank you. Huh? I don't even know what you are talking about here. I don't think anyone said that labor wasn't the largest direct cost for a company.

I saw these articles this morning, and I wonder if something is being lost in translation. It would be pretty strange to have someone refuse care, and then they'd be on advanced life support. Possible, but unlikely. In the EMS world, ambulance crews are divided into two categories - BLS (basic life support, EMT's) and ALS (Advanced life support, Paramedics). The patient may have been listed as ALS because she was transported by an ALS crew. That would NOT be the same as saying she was on life support, of any kind. Just a possible scenario for the mix-up here. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 07:30 AM) Especially because in many of these cases, labor can be replaced by someone making pennies an hour, and nothing would change. It is totally labor. And frankly, you could put any number of other qualified people in these executive jobs for pennies on the dollar, and at worst, nothing would change (hard to make a disaster much worse), but at best, they might actually do better.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 11:35 PM) Lord no. Not even close. Not even top 10 (20?). Just off the top of my head I'll go with the rotations everyone knows and loves: 1998 Braves and the 1971 Baltimore f***ing Orioles. Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Millwood, Neagle (combined ERA somewhere around 3.00, the big 3 all finished in the top 4 or 5 of CY voting that year) and Palmer, McNally, Dobson, Cueller (all won 20 f***ing games) There's also the '93 Braves with Steve Avery but the 5th starter was no one special. I'm not even sure its the best in Sox history, even modern Sox history. The '83 Sox spent most of the year with a 4-man rotation of Hoyt, Dotson, Bannister and Burns, which produced 2 20-game winners and, I believe all four of those guys had ERA's of mid-3's or better. I'd have to look up the exact numbers. -
Top 10 Worst Contracts Of The 2000s

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 06:27 PM) I imagine because, in the 1 year Jones actually played for the Dodgers, he put up an OPS+ of 35. Zito, in 3 years with the Giants, has put up an ERA+ of 97. I imagine Zito's FIP is rather high, but he's actually been a decent middle of the rotation starter for the Giants. Yeah but the length and money for Zito dwarfs what they gave Jones, and that is the real risk. Overpaying someone for a year isn't going to ruin a franchise. Overpaying them for 7 could do that. -
Top 10 Worst Contracts Of The 2000s

How is 2 years of Andruw Jones worse than the Zito disaster? And how on earth is soriano not on this list? -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) So it's speculation that they'd be interested in Matsui and an assumption that he'd play left because Ozzie has been talking about moving Quentin to right. His 'as of today' outfield did have Jones in left and Quentin in right. Sounds like a whole lot of nothing. Yeah, I think the only noteworthy part of this is that the Sox are probably talking to Matsui, which isn't a surprise.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) That's what they said on the Score update on the Winter Meetings. I didn't add it. I'd be shocked they wanted him for the OF. I think there is a 90% chance the Score just added that supposition without researching anything.
-
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) For what it's worth.... the Score just mentioned that the Sox might be pursuing Matsui, and that would Quentin to move over to RF... Did you add the Quentin move part, or did they say that on the Score? Because I assume they'd want Matsui for DH, not OF.
