White Sox vs Arizona 3-26 spring game
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2009 Season in Review
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 03:14 PM) After the Masset-Jenks comparisons that were made, I'm just going to ignore comparisons made by the front office. Jerry Owens = Rudy Law? -
Seen (no particular order, and its hard to pick just 5, I did 6): --Taj Mahal and India generally (spent a month there) --A nothern lights show in Quetico (Canadian side of Boundary Waters) that filled literally half the sky --Rome and its ruins --My daughter's birth --Dusky Track, New Zealand --White Sox World Championship Want to See (also no order, also hard to decide): --Israel/Palestine --Olympics in Chicago --The Andes / ruins / Machu Pichu --All 50 states (I've got 40 right now) --The entire Continental Divide Trail in the US (we're like 15% done right now)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) I think because they can't find anyone to work at the Sec Treas office, they are just monitoring Soxtalk for my ideas now... http://abcnews.go.com/Business/Politics/st...7336&page=1 Finally seeing the light. Lots of folks in the industry have been saying this for a long time. I know someone who is an attorney at CFTC, and she agrees as well.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 08:23 AM) Why is Sarah Palin still whining? Although ironically, while in the process of whining, she insisted she was not whining. Nice. I saw some exerpts in an article from her speech. She really is embarrassing. I can't believe she managed to be elected governor of a state, even if it is a somewhat strange state. Oh wait, I live in Illinois...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 08:11 AM) Staying clean is still "nothing" in my book. To me there is no reason why able bodied people on welfare can't do some sort of community service as a repayment for their entitlements. See, that I'd be 100% on board with. You want public assistance, you better put in at least half time work for the community (full time isn't realistic, if you want them to look for work). Drug tests, though, I'm not so sure.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 07:50 AM) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29891754/ Lawmakers in some states want welfare recipients to submit to random testing I'm not sure what to think of that.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) It looks terrifying. The book is a bit creepy, in a weird way. So depending on treatment, the movie could indeed be terrifying for kids. I hope that isn't the case - I saw a lot of people bring kids to Pan's Labrynth, thinking it was a children's story. Yow.

Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?
NorthSideSox72 replied to WhiteSoxfan1986's topic in The Diamond Club
Schilling and Bly should both be in. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 01:04 PM) Who becomes Konerko's back up? Betmit? I am not sure Kroeger plays IB, but maybe he should learn it He's been learning it in ST, its clear he needs work there. 1B is easier to pick up than other positions, but that doesn't mean anyone can just pick up a 1B glove and be good at it. That said, the team already has 3 guys who play a good 1B, though one of them is kept from it to protect him from injury (Konerko, Betemit, Thome*). Plus a guy like Fields who has played the other corner for so long could probably do pretty well there in a pinch.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) If the White Sox are serious about finding a CF/Leadoff hitter, then not having David Cook lead off in Charlotte would be a mistake. Owens has already bottomed out in AAA, so Cook deserves a shot as a leadoff hitter in Charlotte. It seems obvious now to me that Jerry Owens peaked in AA in 2005. David Cook is a great situational hitter and has incredible plate discipline. Isn't that what you want in a leadoff hitter? Or do you want Owens popping up to the third basemen in foul territory 4 times a game in Chicago or Charlotte? I have tried to think of the reasons why a guy with Cook's numbers the last few years wouldn't at least get a look and an ST invite, given the problem in CF. Its not age (alone), he's younger than Owens and Wise. Its obviously not performance. That leaves these candidates, as far as I can tell: 1. He pissed someone off (or more than one someone) 2. The organization soured on him some time ago and simply isn't willing to be open to guys figuring it out later 3. There is something mechanical or otherwise the Sox have seen in him that they feel means he won't succeed 4. The organization has decided that they HAVE to have a speedy leadoff guy in CF I can think of no other reasonably possible scenarios. I'm guessing its a combo of 2 and 4.

QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) I think Cowley takes his job seriously. The problem IMO is the Sun Times sports editorial approach... to create controversy. Sure it draws readers, but I'm sick of every sports story in Chicago going the Oliver Stone style conspiracy route. There are other issues with Cowley as well... 1. Cowley isn't particularly good at... writing. 2. The Sox as an organization are very secretive, which makes it hard on ANY beat writer to get good info 3. Cowley has burned too many bridges with the Sox, so what little access he may have had, is not there anymore. 4. Cowley overuses sarcasm in the extreme. He's just a terrible beat writer all around.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) Yes, he's out of options. Wise is in the same position. The eight on the spring roster that I don't think will be there on opening day: Broadway, Colon, MacDougal, Egbert Lucy, Nix, Kroeger, Owens I'd agree, except that I think MacDougal makes the club (unless someone trades for him). Carrasco goes to AAA (he has one option left).
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) They optioned pitchers Adam Russell and Ehren Wassermann to Class AAA Charlotte and reassigned infielders Gordon Beckham, Ben Broussard and Eider Torres and left-hander Aaron Poreda to minor league camp. That leaves 1 option left for each of those pitchers, in case anyone was curious.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:35 AM) It's a shame Lillibridge won't be among them, he's in the starting lineup today, leading off. Maybe only striking out once yesterday saved him. Who else is in the lineup, that we know aren't being cut? Any info on scheduled pitchers?
-
anyone get to see the address last night? Anything worth noting in it?

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 08:03 AM) why did ozzies hat have 'opd' on it? Oakland Police Department, as homage to the OPD officers killed recently trying to apprehend a (I think) parole violator.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 07:59 AM) It is his walk year... punny.
-
In one of the Trib articles today, it was mentioned that Ozzie wants to get the 25 man roster set, or nearly so, by early next week. So expect to see a lot of cuts soon, maybe even today. German was reassigned someone mentioned earlier, but Wassermann pitched yesterday. Actually some very good performances across the board for the relief pitchers in yesterday's game.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 02:58 AM) So unless Lucy really catches fire, it's C. Miller's job to lose right now. I'll add this in here also. I'm surprised Ozzie even said there is a competition at all. Too bad Lucy isn't hitting well in ST, he might actually have had a shot.

Mississippi Bans Red-Light Cameras
NorthSideSox72 replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
I'll be the contrarian here, sort of. I think these cameras are a generally good idea, but, poorly executed. The process to fight a ticket is a huge pain (DC in particular), which is just wrong to me - you make it easier to write tickets, you'd better make it just as easy to contest them. And any sort of manipulation to get more revenue - changing light timing, nicking people who you shouldn't, etc. - is beyond bad, and might be illegal anyway. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) To recap, so far, you convinced me that a separate download was a good idea. I was initially against it, but your argument won me out. Here is where it gets interesting. IMHO your most compelling point is the promotional potential of having the song available for download. I think that is far better than the profit argument. I wonder what the promotional budget is for a Star Trek movie. My guess it would be in the tens of millions. So why either send people to iTunes or similar to download the song for .99 or set up customer service, tech support, etc. to sell it yourself for .99? Instead you could offer it for free at your website. Promote the movie and have hundreds of thousands of downloads instead of thousands of paid downloads? It seems if you are going to use the song to promote the film, the few dollars in profit you may earn would be better spent as an advertising cost. Free download would be great, and as you say, would still get you some marketing edge. I think you could also put it out on iTunes and charge a buck, but, free also works. Not allowing it to go out at all makes no sense for anyone.
-
Interesting to note: neither German nor Wassermann have pitched in an A game in a week plus. Not sure if they were already reassigned and we didn't hear about it, or what.
-
This seems like a mistake of epic proportions to me. A team that consistently gets the smallest crowds in baseball by a long shot, and in this economy, you are going to put Miami-Dade into hundreds of millions of dollars in new debt? When that city claims it can't pay for things like schools and roads? That's where they want to spend money - on a franchise that as a business is a failure? If I were a voter down there, I would be livid. This is just an epic fail. After a couple honeymoon years, they'll be empty again anyway. I love baseball, but I think its been shown clearly that the Miami-Dade area can't support a baseball team right now.

White Sox - Indians @ Goodyear AZ, 3:05 CT, CSN
NorthSideSox72 replied to justBLAZE's topic in 2009 Season in Review
MacDougal having a solid spring, which scares me, because he might win the job (especially being out of options and being paid big money). I'm 90% sure he'll just be the same guy he's been every year but 2006 - lack of control, loads of tools, poor execution and can't handle pressure scenarios. Why bother putting him in there, only to replace him in May with Carrasco or Wassermann anyway? -

QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) In the offseason, the trick is that you have to locate them manually, using the calendar on the http://www.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/ site. After you navigate to the correct date, you can find the links. Here is the link for today's game http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?g...chamlb_clemlb_1 Thanks!
