  1. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 04:04 PM) I thought about a new thread on this, but decided not to. Mods, fell free to break this into a new thread if you feel necessary. NYT To Publish Explosive Story On McCain Camp Angst (bits and pieces below) If by combativeness, they simply mean that there were a lot of differing views among the leadership, then that is not a bad thing. If by combativeness, they mean continuous deadlocks, incoherent direction of action, and flailing decisions (as described with Palin)m then that IS a bad thing.
  2. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) Well, there's already talk of another stimulus check which will be sent out after the election . Schumer predicted a $600 check to be sent out to individuals. thoughts? These stimulus checks are silly. Won't help in a way that needs to be helped. I've heard talk of funding a lot of works projects, like roads/rails/bridges type stuff - its a nice marriage between things the country needs (infrastructure work and jobs) and a more sustainable solution than a $600 check. I'd rather see that done. Alternately, we can do some serious funding for alternative energy infrastructure and technology projects, which could help trigger long run jobs and growth as well as help our energy needs (and reduce pollution and health care costs, and help the environment, and allow us to sell technology globally, etc.).
  3. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) No, thats just what liberals always do, irrelevant of the outlet or medium. I've grown accustomed to it. I dont think I've actually opened the Dem thread more than a handful of times, and to my knowledge have never posted in there. I've respected that they have a thread to say what they want. it is pretty funny that posts do come in here from the "other side" when certain GOP here make claims or statements (granted, sometimes those statements are ridiculous though) If your brush was any wider, you couldn't fit it in the door.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) Too much corporate influence supposedly. "corporate" is a big part of America, and having at least some of that knowledge in the executive branch makes a lot of sense. Now, if we are talking about lobbying with money/gifts by corporations, or an administration bent heavily towards a specific industry that needs an overhaul (BushCo and energy), then that could be problematic.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) The funny thing is that I believe they should have tons of banking experience, and I think Dimon will do a great job. There was a whole lot of people who thought that because Paulsen came from a bank, he shouldn't be in the government, just a few short weeks ago, I am sure they will all of the sudden change their minds though. Are people really saying that Paulson shouldn't have been SecTreas because he was in banking? That's a little ridiculous. I pointed out a few days ago, his resume wasn't ideal for a number of reasons. But his experience at GS wasn't one of them. Really more the opposite, actually.
  6. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) Why on earth would you put someone in a position like that who doesn't have knowledge of how the banking industry operates? And in this case, someone whose bank actually looked pretty good, relative to the others.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) Who's that? CEO Chase/JP Morgan, last I knew.
  8. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) FWIW, NRO is reporting from a variety of sources that Jamie Dimon has agreed in principle to be Obama's Treasury Secretary. Well, he is leading one of the few banks that remained semi-intact through this mess (Chase/JPM). But these sorts of things are, I believe, not supposed to be publically acknowledged or announced before the election.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) The Republicans have controlled policy for the last 8 years for the most part, and despite their official platform at one recent point calling for a return to the gold standard, that hasn't happened either. So, as the only person posting in this thread so far that I'd call "liberal"... what are your feelings on this 401k issue?
  10. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) It's comical how many times this has to be said. NSS care to revise your last statement from earlier in the year?? Because I just checked the The Democrat thread and for the most part it's only the Dems posting in there. I mean I never even read that thread...there's nothing I want to see in there, but check this thread and I don't think you can get through one page with out seeing the same kind of posts this thread was supposed to exclude. Dems just can't help themselves...they just can't. It was proven in the GOP thread and it's proven in this thread. To the moderators credit, they have stepped in from time to time to say keep the stuff out of this thread...but it's like a full time job. It's like putting a kid in front of a candy bowl and saying...please don't touch....they just can't help themselves. What's to revise? I stand by that statement. As for these specific threads, I agree there has been a lot more cross-pollenation here than in the Dem thread. I think LF is right, the Dem-GOP ratio among regular posters is heavily Dem, probably 2-to-1 or so. That may be the issue. Here is a question going forward... do we want to more strictly keep that out?
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 01:02 PM) No. There's a theme now with that nut case from Minnesota and now this guy. And then there's Palin's comments about pro-American parts of the country. WTF is going on with these people?? It's getting scary. I agree with you that the GOP and McCain/Palin have run a far worse campaign, dirt and slime wise, than Obama and the Dems have. I see it as being a product of a number of things, but there are three primary ones, IMO: 1. Desperation. They are about to lose. 2. The GOP marketing team, starting about 10 years ago and ramping up after 9/11, made a decision to exploit fear in order to gain electoral ground. 3. The GOP faithful have seen their party take hold of power in a big way, and basically squander it, accomplishing very little. They are frustrated.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) How many conservatives will use ACORN as some kind of excuse for Obama winning? About as many Dems who blame voting machines for Kerry losing. In both cases, there may be a small sliver of real effect in there, but its not enough to tip any scales.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 11:58 AM) That quote was from a member of Congress. I assumed you were referring to the black-and-white comment, since you were talking Civil War.
  14. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 11:55 AM) I'm getting the feeling that certain parts of the GOP are trying to start another civil war. Its the South. Some people there don't think the first one ever ended. And its the "War of Northern Aggression". Anyway, this is not "certain parts of the GOP", these are a few fringe lunatics. They exist in both parties.
  15. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) Wow are politicans stupid. Does this mean there would be no more 401(K) and everything is then a Roth IRA type of contribution? I really wish McCain would have choosen a better running mate. As much as I dislike Obama's tax policy ideas, I think even he isn't so economically and politcally stupid as to support this type of move.
  16. The Sox have, at times, helped players make careers elsewhere, when they knew they'd do better in another organization. Its not usually with high end players though. Guys like Ross Gload (who was blocked), or Ryan Wing (who wanted a fresh start), have been traded or let go in order to achieve those goals. But its of course a secondary concern, to winning at the major league level.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) House Democrats are the weak link in the current government IMO. I'm pretty sure I'm voting for whatever Republican is running for my district (I think the incumbent is a Dem). I'm pinning my hopes on the thought that this idea isn't held in high regard among the Dem party higher-ups. This is just a lunatic idea from a few house reps who are hungry for more gov revenue. I hope. Then this can just die a quick death.
  18. No f***ing way. That is idiotic to say the least. This is call/letter to the Congressman territory. This is just disastrous on all sorts of levels.
  19. I started this same thread a week or two ago. Philips is now a free agent, BTW. Lucy was outrighted to Charlotte, and we'll see how he recovers from the knee. Armstrong is hitting well in winter ball, but is lefthanded at the plate. If Lucy's healthy, he's my choice. Forget Hall's option. If Lucy isn't healthy, well, I just don't know.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 09:40 AM) So, after having my car totaled in a rear end collisiona little over a week ago, I got a new car. new being a relative term here. I bring it home Friday, and Saturday, take a drive up I-355 to go to K&G and get a suit. On the way, I missed having my second car totaled by about 1 foot. I really hate assholes who have no f***ingn clue how to merge, and assholes who follow way to close in traffic, especially construction traffic. I am in the right lane, and there is lots of space in front of me and the car ahead of me. As we approach the ramp merging on, i see a car coming down the ramp, at about the same speed as the car in front of me. Lots of room behind him, just like I left, so i figured the guy would slow down and slip right it. Um, no. Merging asshole never slows down, or speeds up, and at the last second just before turning into the lane, suddenly sees that there is a car there and slams on his brakes, causing him to miss that car, but slide to a stop right in front of me! So, I hit mine. I was slowing down as i saw all this happening, so I wasn't going too fast, but cvouldn't change lanes, I checked. As my car stops, I look in the mirror and see a car sideways, and hear the tires screechign on the road. Apparently the idiot behind me forgot what brake lights meant. His car managed to slide to the right of mine, missing me by a foot at best. So what happens? The jackass who started allthis by not watching what the f*** they were doing, and skidding to a stop half in an expressway lane, flips ME off, and drives away. And the asshole who almost hit me from behind ALSO flips me off, and drives away. I am the only one in this situation who paid attention and did whatever he could to avoid this crap, and these idiots flip me off. They are so lucky they drove away, or Alpha Dog would have really needed that appeal. Everyone's IQ drops about 20 points when they get behind the wheel. And some people just don't have those 20 points to spare. Not paying attention is defintely a pet peave. People don't take driving seriously, which I find bizarre. You are guiding a 3000 pound missile at 80 mph. You don't have as much control as you think you do.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) Don't worry, it is more of that change you are about to see... Are you seriously equating Steve92938745692378569387562 to Barack Obama?
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 10:15 AM) Still should be kept in the Dem thread. I'd agree. I read the article, and I still don't see what Steve is getting at. I also don't think its at all meaningful to hyperanalyze her pregnancy like that. Every mother is different, make different decisions, have different doctors, etc.
  23. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 08:25 AM) Well, that would reveal that she didn't really give birth not so long ago... can't let that cat out of the bag. What on earth are you talking about? I can't even tell what you are trying to say with that double-negative.
  24. Obama went to his house? I thought they met at a rally or something.
  25. One small bright spot in the economy... people have begun saving more, after years or decades of declining savings rates. This is a short term bad, but a long term good.
