  1. This is kind of funny. At a shareholders' meeting, someone asked Warren Buffet if he was interesting in buying the Cubs... Apparently, he feels that the Cubs aren't a particularly good financial investment.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 5, 2008 -> 07:16 AM) Personally I'm a proud GTA player, I own almost the whole series. I'm an adult. I do what I want in my free time. HOWEVER, being a parent, there is no way in hell I let my 11-year old stepdaughter play it or any game like it. It's the same principle as R-rated movies. When she is like a junior in high school and has better judgment? Ok, maybe. But she can stick to her Wii and my other more kid-friendly games. (And I know when she's been playing my 360 when I'm not around, she isn't that good at covering up evidence.) That's exactly what I was getting at. As adults, we should have some idea of the boundaries by now, and be able to play these sorts of games without it effecting our mindset out in the real world. But an 11-year-old is still much more vulnerable to those influences, whether they want to hear it or not.
  3. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 4, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) Well, thats mainly the reason for my disappointment. As far as actresses go, she's probably better than Katie Holmes, but at least Katie Holmes is somewhat attractive. You're telling me you couldn't get an attractive, up and coming brunette to play Rachel Dawes in a summer blockbuster with Christian Bale, Michael Caine and the late Heath Ledger? On a side not, I rented "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." Anyone see it? Any good? I have to disagree on the Holmes/Gyllenhall thing. Not only is she a much better actress, she's also better looking than Katie Holmes IMO. But she has the similarities you'd want for a replacement character like that - the slightly downturned eyes, dark hair, dimples. And on that Jesse James flick... being somewhat into western history in general, I thought the backgrounds, dialogue and sets were superb. The acting was very good as well. But the movie had no pace at all, dragged on way too long in places, and just wasn't very interesting. That was my take, anyway.
  4. For adults who spend their time playing this sort of video game, I think its maybe a little nerdy and sad, but no big deal. We all have our weird hobbies. But the fact that so many kids are into this game and playing it regularly should be a pretty good indicator to folks about how many lousy f***ing parents there are these days. What kind of useless excuse for a guardian goes out and buys this s*** for their kid(s) to play? Or allows it to be played in their home by their 12-year olds?
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 5, 2008 -> 06:43 AM) I think the point is if everyone wants to b**** about GWB and his handling of the economy, then those same people who b**** about that needs to b**** about Clinton and his recessionary policies as well. The bigger point is neither one of them really has much influence over recessions. That's the key right there. I understand no what SS2K5 was referring to, and its certainly true that GWB had nothing to do with the recession that hit the country in 2001. He had zero control over that. And putting all other issues aside and looking at the economy, I think GWB did a few good things early on in his Presidency. I thought the tax rebates in late '01 were a good move at that time - it was a decelerator for the worsening economy. I thought the lowering of the cap gains tax rates was a good idea (though I honestly don't recall if that was really anything he had to do with, or if it was Congress, and I'm fuzzy exactly when it occurred). But then he went waaaaaaay off track economically. He entered an insanely expensive and stupid war, he tried to cut numerous other taxes while doing it, he allowed the budget deficits to skyrocket, the attempts at business regulation were awful, trade policies were short-sighted... he just really went off the rails. And yes, that collection of actions has had a negative effect on the economy.
  6. Alright dammit. Time to end this s***. Time for the offense to wake the f*** up and support this pitching staff. Let me say this loudly, in case they couldn't hear me last time... GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!!!! No f***ing smilies this time. Just win.
  7. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ May 4, 2008 -> 09:35 PM) Sort of. I mean I am disappointed by her comment that equates expert opinion to 'elitism'. She was asked to name one economist who agreed with her argument that a gas tax suspension would be a boon for consumers. She basically said in reply that it doesn't matter what economists say -- they are part of "this incredible pushback" against something that would "give relief to the vast majority of Americans". She lumps this in with "elite opinion [which] is always on the side of doing things that really disadvantage the vast majority of Americans". So, basically, economists are just elitists working to disadvantage Americans. Even when there's an academic CONSENSUS, it's just "elite opinion" that noone really should pay any mind to. So Pres Clinton goes before Congress and argues that virtually all science supports global warming, and we need to start sacrificing now before the problem gets worse. But Mrs President, aren't those just elitists working to disadvantage Americans, like you said? Republicans argue that failing to extend the tax cuts will actually reduce revenue. Well, sure, every serious economist agrees that the idea is a joke, but remember, Mrs President, those are just elitists trying to f*** us over. It's a terrible precedent, it's bulls***, and it shoots her own agenda in the foot. I've been more or less on the Obama-Clinton fence, and today is maybe the first time I've actually been angry at Clinton. Since day 1 of her campaign, HRC has been consistently speaking to the public as if they are all 12-year olds. Its one of the many, many things I can't stand about her. So it should be no surprise she's willing to throw anyone in the know under the bus. It also explains a lot about her strong spot - uneducated and undereducated people. You know, I have spoken to a lot of women about her candidacy - friends, family alike. They all say almost the same thing... some variety of "I really wanted to like her, I tried, but I just can't. She's just the most dishonest/fake/pandering candidate of the bunch."
  8. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ May 4, 2008 -> 06:48 PM) I'd have to check, but I doubt that's true after the tax cuts, and maybe the Medicare drug benefit. I don't think the tax cuts were $300B a year. Maybe they are though - I could be wrong.
  9. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 4, 2008 -> 04:35 PM) why? take from the rich and give to the poor. why do you want tax breaks for the wealthy, northsidesox72? I can't tell if you are joking around about liberal tax policies, or saying I'm a tax liberal. I hope its not the latter, as I think I've been pretty clear on that. Not only don't I favor any increase in taxes, I have in fact gotten on Obama and others when they suggest it. The only tax "increases" I can ever remember saying I'd be OK with were: 1. Removing the SS income cap (because SS is a truly regressive tax) 2. Recognizing investment gains and arb profits taken in by traders doing local piggybacks to house business (as well as carried interest gains on personal monies) as income, which it truly is for them Anyway, you probably meant the former. But I felt I needed to be clear.
  10. QUOTE (YASNY @ May 4, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) Oh this is great. You non-racist, women's rights liberals just have to point out the symbolic signifance of "Big Brown" winning the Derby and the fillie having to be euthanized. I think this speaks for itself. Are you seriously offended by this? I have to admit that the part about the horse having to be put down is a bit crass. But the "Big Brown" thing is actually kind of funny given Hillary's bet, don't you think?
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 3, 2008 -> 11:58 PM) BUT TEH OFFENCE!1!!1!!!1!!!!! Teh Offence has indeed sucked for a week or two now. And we're no longer in first. But its still way early, the Sox are a half game out, and the pitching has been nothing short of stellar so far this year.
  12. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ May 3, 2008 -> 09:37 PM) the point is, i made the initial comment and i stood by it and we're not in first place anymore. nothing about this team except for the starting pitching, 1/3 of the pen (Logan and Thornton have been really nice so far), and Carlos Quentin has impressed me and I think they're just (so far) a bunch of underachievers setting up all the fans for a huge disappointment I think people get a little annoyed when you seem to enjoy being on the right side of "I told you so" on some random prediction, more than you dislike the fact that the Sox fell out of first. It makes it seem like you'd rather have been right about that than have the Sox win some games.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) What people won't tell you is that no one would have managed a balanced budget during this administration, Iraq or no Iraq. The Clinton recession and 9-11 destroyed that chance. OK, what the heck is the bolded about? And the budget could have been balanced by now if not for Iraq.
  14. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 3, 2008 -> 10:54 AM) Can anyone say Pander? Sheesh. Read some of the user comments for a good laugh. Doesn't seem to be helping. Obama leading by about 10 points so far in Guam. Not that it much matters, really.
  15. QUOTE (knightni @ May 3, 2008 -> 07:56 AM) There's a theater here that restricts sales to anyone under 13. They have only PG-13 or R rated movies there. No children under 13 are allowed in the theater. Even with parents. The "kids" theater is in another part of town. They charge like, 2 bucks more, but have nice surround sound and comfy chairs. So, the only annoyance is the occasional cell phone going off. Sounds good to me. I wonder if there is a theater like that in the Chicago area.
  16. QUOTE (YASNY @ May 3, 2008 -> 08:50 AM) A man that refuses toe the line for either party. What a radical concept. I like it. I just don't think he should expect to get the royal treatment from either party if he chooses that route.
  17. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 2, 2008 -> 11:50 PM) Attention you, the person who decides to bring a 3 month old little girl, and a 3 year old boy to the 10:30 showing of Iron Man on a Friday night. To make matters worse, the baby starts to cry during the movie. Do you walk out with the little girl. No, you let it scream telling it shush while you pass the popcorn. The 3 year old awakens from his slumber to start screaming at the end because of the big Iron monster on the screen scared him. What the f*** is wrong with you as a parent. What selfish drive do you have that you can't say, well if I cant get a baby sitter maybe I shouldn't go to the movie and ruin everyone elses time. I am a parent of two young children and I try to be very courteous of those around me who don't have children and are out to have a good time. If I cannot get a baby sitter, I stay home. When you have children your priorities change. The center of the universe stops being you. If something cool comes up and you dont have a baby sitter, maybe you sit it out. Its not fun, sure. But these are some of the responsibilities we share as parents. My only solitude tonight is that your child will most likely keep you up afraid of the big red monster shooting stuff from his hands. You the moronic kids who forget that this in fact is a movie, and that technology for real time interactive movies has not be developed yet. The images on that screen are 2D images projected from the rear of the movie theater. Notice the big white light from the back of the theater. So your yelling to move, duck or watch out behind you only annoy those around you. The characters on the screen cannot hear your warnings. In fact, they are actors and are not in real danger. And finally you, the person who doesnt plan for the premier weekend and shows up exactly as the movie starts. Do not come to my row and ask that I move to your seat 3 rows in front of the large screen so my neck can be sore for a month, just so you and your girly and your friends can sit together. I came to the movie theater an hour and a half before the movie started so I can get my killer seats exactly where I wanted them. Sorry you didnt plan accordingly. And please because you are wearing a cubs hat, and I am wearing a sox hat do you think that I am poor, and that you can bribe me for 5 bucks. I probably pay more in taxes than you make in a year cub fan, so f*** off and get me my TPS reports asshole Outside of that the movie was great. This reminds me... having had many similar experiences, I always thought that if I had the capital to invest, I had a great idea for a theater experience. You build a more or less normal theatre, but the entrance has a very small bar. You can only enter if you are 21, period. You only have a very narrow selection of beers, and few seats, and you don't allow the booze into the theatre. You then also have an usher who actually stays IN the theatre for each movie, and actually tells people to be quiet if necessary (and asks them to leave, also, if necessary). You also make the warnings much more pronounced that if you start talking or annoying people or using your damn phone, you will be asked to leave (and then actually follow through). The overage you make on the booze sales could help with the extra usher costs, or you even add a dollar or two to the movie price. What do you get? A theater with adults in it, no kids, and a respectful audience. All for a dollar or two more per person. I would gladly pay that difference for the experience. You could also do this as only part of the theatre - these X number of screens are on the other side of the bar, the rest can be normal screens for families, teenagers, etc.
  18. QUOTE (Mplssoxfan @ May 3, 2008 -> 07:41 AM) Don't they ever update these things? Mandela was released from Prison in 1990, for goodness sakes! Not to mention the fact that the ANC is the ruling party in South Africa, and has been for years. This has been an issue all along with the various watch lists and no fly lists - they instituted a list, but never bothered to institute a way to get off of it. There are still hundreds or thousands of people who can't fly because they share a name with some loony.
  19. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 2, 2008 -> 11:05 PM) This coming from the party that threw Leiberman to the wolves because he voted what he thought was the interest of America instead of toeing the party line. Well, there was more to that than one vote and you know it. I don't like the party B.S. either of course, but Joe has decided (for good or for bad) that he's basically an independent. He shouldn't then expect either party to be overly enthusiastic about him.
  20. QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ May 2, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) He might have to. I only really like him at 2b though....... He's actually decent at 3B as well. But anything else he's played, including SS and anything in the OF, he's pretty brutal.
  21. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ May 2, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) Tonight's lineup 1. Swish, 1B 2. OC, SS 3. Thome, DH 4. Dye, RF 5. AJ, C 6. Q, LF 7. Crede, 3B 8. BA, CF 9. Uribe, SS Which means PK is still hurting. Which means we have a 2 man bench - Ozuna and Hall. Yikes. Can Ozuna play every position on the field but C?
  22. QUOTE (shipps @ May 2, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) Dude!not cool I cant close the damn thing on my work computer! mute, then CTRL_ALT_DEL to get to Task Manager, and end it.
  23. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 2, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) Broadway has also had problems in Canada. Damn you.
  24. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 2, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) Bourgeois would have to be placed on the 40 in order to be called up, I doubt KW wants to fill the open spot on the 40 with a guy who's signed to an MLC and would only be with the big club for 4 games. I thought JB was on the 40 - my bad. I still would rather have seen Owens or even Getz come up though.
