Your favorite Presidential speeches

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 11, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) The greatest leader ever, Abraham Lincoln, November 19, 1863 (FYI if anyone is interested, I just finished a fascinating book on him. Check out Team of Rivals by Doris Goodwin) Great book. -
QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 11, 2008 -> 03:01 PM) I think it's way too early to say not adjusting. Has he even entered the adjustment period? He had 2 innings before this start. Yeah, its kind of tough to say that with guys like Poreda and Miranda who are 21 and jumped from Rookie ball last year to High A this year. Give them a little time.

I'm impressed. That's a nice little response.

Your favorite Presidential speeches

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 11, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Can I nominate the speech involving the phrase "Fool me once, shame on...shame on you...10 second pause...fool you can't get fooled again."? Solely from video clips, I have to nominate a couple of speeches by JFK. His Inaugural address and the Moon speech @ Rice university. RFK > JFK. But yeah, JFK was quite good. -
Bush Memo Allowing Torture Surfaces

Here is the thing - legally, he may be right. The conduct against AQ may not be covered by Geneva. But IMO, that's not even the issue. The greater issue is that this administration made a choice to eschew the moral high ground. They gave up the thing that, to me, is one of the greatest currencies this country has in world affairs - that the U.S.A. will act fairly and justly. So, whether or not AQ technically falls under the umbrella of the Geneva Conventions is not the key issue. The decision should have been obvious and clear - if you want the world to be there with you, and back you up in this war on terror, then you have to continue to be a country with fighting beside. And looking at the Iraq War, and some of these policies with regard to non-state combatants, we sadly went off that course. -
Your favorite Presidential speeches

In terms of Presidents in my lifetime, Reagan and Clinton were the best speechifiers. They both had a number of very good ones. I agree with the poster who said earlier, the Reagan speech after the Challenger accident - that was perfect. JFK gave some good ones before my lifetime, but honestly, I think his brother Robert was even better. And I know I am going to get reamed for this but, honestly, I thought Obama's speech on race a few weeks back (the one about Wright, etc.) ranks up there with the best Presidential speeches I've seen. -
Not sure where to put this, but, here we go. Someone went around and felled about 15 very old, large cottonwood trees in the Burnham sanctuary park in the south lake shore neighborhood. It appears the motive was so that some local condo residents wanted a better view of the lake. Nevermind that the trees were there well before they were. I think the Chicago Park District should go find some even taller trees somewhere, and re-plant those right where the old ones were.

Even though it resulted in a Sox player being pummelled, I have to vote for Ventura's charge on Nolan Ryan.

OK Kap, explain this one to me. Frontier Airlines filed for bankruptcy today (though they are still going to operate). I was a bit susprised because they seemed to be doing OK. Turn out, they basically were. Which leads to the two strange things about this - and maybe your background in the industry would help me understand this. First, Frontier's largest credit card processor (Wells Fargo) decided to "hold back" a substantial amount of cash paid for its tickets. Which brings up the first question - why would they do that? And is that even legal? Is this a sign that Wells Fargo is having liquidity problems? Then, Frontier decides to file for bankruptcy, because apparently if they do, that forces the hand of the processor. Seems like a drastic measure to achieve this, but, there it is. So, is this something that you have heard of before? Credit card processors not paying the companies they serve? Seems bizarre to me. It almost looks like this was a domino effect from Wells Fargo. One way or another, I hope Frontier can pull it back together. I like their airline and fly them whenever I go to Denver.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Hopefully this first start goes much better than the other first start. Huh? Its only W-S's 2nd game of the season, how could Poreda have had a previous start? MILB says he's yet to pitch this year.

I actually had a similar reaction when I saw that story a few days ago. I was thinking, "get to the important part" - the actual results of this 'survey' - and they never did! Just piss poor journalism right there.

Home Run Inn, for frozen. No doubt. But we usually do the DiGiorno thing where we buy the crust, sauce, cheese etc. and make it ourselves, which is WAY better than frozen.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 09:19 AM) Things not to say in an interview. "What is your weakness" "I guess if I had a weakness, its that I work to hard, and care too much." Yeah, I hate that question. At some point, I started answering it with, "which answer would you like?" Which usually illicits some chuckles, I tell them I can give them the pat answer if they want me to (shows I can play the game when needed), or I can give them a real answer. They ask for a real weakness, and I give one.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) for my 2 cents, this is a bit ridiculous. Athomeboy's posts are obviously one sided that clinton sucks, but at least he's posting real, legitimate articles from legitimate sources. He isn't posting "Clinton is such a b****" or ridiculous articles about how she's a lesbian cokehead. It hasn't been ahb's posts that have started negative towns in this forum, so I can't imagine why we should tell him to cool it. Every poster has their gimmick, his is posting negative Clinton articles. I would agree that AHB's posts have not been ones to start any of the overly negative B.S. threads. No one said he did. And no one is suspending anyone, or penalizing anyone. Just trying to make the forum useful for everyone, keep the threads manageable, and not repel people from the main thread discussing the candidates. No big deal here. But if you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to PM me.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 08:08 AM) If they wanted a versatile lefty hitter off the bench, they could have just gone after Mackowiak again. He's similar to Gload in some ways, but indeed he'd actually be more useful. His corner OF defense would be a little better, plus he can play 3B and even CF or middle infield in a dire pinch.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 08:06 AM) Trust him, he's like 6'5" 400 pounds easy Well, you're not far off on the height. And the way I've been eating lately, another 160 pounds may not be far away!

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:43 PM) It's ironic that Sisco had surgery today, as it ties into how much someone like Gload would help this roster right now. We're going to need a lefty bat off the bench to help us against tough righties. And when I say bat, I don't mean someone like Owens. You'll struggle to find a bigger Ross Gload fan than I. But, honestly, I don't see him having much of a role on this team. First, Ross' splits are almost identical between LHP and RHP. Also, the lineup is indeed a bit righty heavy, but, look at the positions that Ross could reasonably play - 1B, DH, LF. Plus PH/PR. Maybe RF in a real pinch, but in that scenario you put Quentin in RF and Gload in LF. So, he'd be replacing Konerko, Thome or Quentin. Thome kills righties. Paulie's numbers dip only slightly against RHP. And Quentin hasn't even been in the majors enough to know how he will handle different sides. And finally, remember this team carries only 4 bench guys, 1 being a catcher. That gives you 3 slots to cover the field, and Gload is not exactly a guy who can play a ton of positions. So really, I don't see much benefit to having him on this club this year. Now, in 2007, I agree, he could have come in handy starting in LF and relieving Thome/Konerko on occasion.

Anyone else think that Uribe might improve his hitting a bit by just setting up a little closer to the plate? He's really diving out there. -
