  1. Happy Birthday Gager. I'm guessing you're on the road, so, hopefully you are in a fun town somewhere to celebrate!
  2. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 08:01 AM) Ryan Wing signed as a minor league FA with Oakland Correct.
  3. Having been to Sox games at home against every AL team and a number of NL teams... NYY, BOS and CLE are all bad in their own special ways. NYY and BOS are already spoken for, no need to add there. But CLE fans are terrible too, but with a lot less reason to be. The fact that they still incessantly boo Thome is a prime example, when compared to how well the Sox fans treat Thomas, who was far more standoffish as a player than Thome ever was.
  4. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 01:49 AM) It's not even close. The Cubs and Sox are in different leagues and are only tied by geographical means and it's only a big deal because fans make it out to be due to bragging rights. The Bears and the Packers, on the other hand, are a bitter rivalry, one of the oldest and most intense in all of sports, and they are in the same league and division. Their wins and losses directly effect each other. The Cubs/Sox wins and losses only effect each other in inter league play. Don't get me wrong - I root for the Bears in any game, including against GB. But I also happen to have a ton of respect for the Green Bay franchise. I mean, seriously - a town of 70,000 people with an NFL team that has a decades-long waiting list just to be part of a sellout crowd. That's gritty, and ballsy, and perfect for what Football should be, IMO.
  5. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 04:05 PM) total madness. energy independence is the top issue to be dealt with. too bad it won't. everyone in the Senate and House will just b**** and fight and nothing will get done. That's the key, right there - energy policy. There is good news and bad news. Good news: many things CAN be done about it, and a positive effect could be felt pretty quickly, if done right. Also good, all three candidates are saying its a priority. The bad news is, as you alude to, it seems unlikely that Congress and/or the next President will do it well.
  6. I think if the following things happen: 1. Crede stays healthy 2. Crede has a good year 3. The Sox make him an offer that is within spitting distance of those likely in free agency Then Crede may well stay with the club. Also, if someone makes a huge offer for Fields, that makes it probable. But, I don't think the Sox will make an offer, in years or money, that will be competitive. I wouldn't dismiss the possibility entirely though.
  7. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 07:34 AM) Yeah, just a little. Please change that, someone. Done.
  8. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 08:10 AM) Sometimes there are no human solutions to a problem. If its a human problem, which this is, then there are always human solutions available, IMO.
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) There was a Tom Clancy book that had the Arab-Israeli situation being resolved like you describe, with the Swiss being in control of Jerusalem. I just don't remember the name. The Sum of All Fears. Excellent book - his peak, I think (he started going downhill after that). And I think that is the best idea for Jerusalem as well, but, you'd need the world's major powers to all go in and pretty much force that solution on the parties involved. And there is no political will to do that right now.
  10. Predictions? I'll go with... Clinton, 53% Obama, 46%
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 07:19 AM) Didn't Wing leave as a minor league free agent? Yes, but my understanding was that he could have been signed to a minor league deal but wasn't.
  12. I'm pretty happy about it, as I mentioned in some other thread where this came up. He was one of two pitchers we lost in a recent Rule V draft that I was a little annoyed about (the other being Ryan Wing).
  13. well, good. Now if we can just get Ryan Wing back, I'll have gotten over my issues with the Rule V a little while back.
  14. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) Fernando Hernandez is back with the White Sox. Re-Acquired for $25,000. Buh? Wait - he was playing on Oakland's major league 25 man roster. So do the Sox have to put him on the 25? I hope not. I liked him, but he needs to be in AAA.
  15. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) not sure how Lamont was my guy, seeing that I live in Illinois, but none the less. The general question remains, is it ok for someone to declare themselves a member of one party and when they cant win in the party, switch to whatever provides them with the best strategic advantage? (this is a general, not a Lieberman related question) And the answer remains pretty clear to me - yes it is. If that bothers you, then don't vote for him. Let the system work.
  16. I figure this is a bit of a public service. In case anyone wants to know, what to do if you encounter a cougar/puma/mountain lion or any other large predatory cat... 1. DO NOT RUN 2. Did I mention, don't run? 3. Be standing up - don't crouch or crawl 4. If you have children or pets nearby, pick them up off the ground 5. Back away slowly - do not turn your back on it 6. Some folks recommend putting your arms in the air to look big, or talking softly to it 7. Do not agitate it - don't threaten or make sudden moves 8. If you are actually physically attacked (extremely rare), fight it off with everything you have - don't play dead (that is for Grizzlies) 9. Do. Not. Run. The chances of anyone who reads this ever having such an encounter are very, very slim.
  17. MLB: Sox..................................... Arizona NFL: Bears................................... Green Bay (yup, that's right) NHL: Hawks, but I could care less MLS: Fire NCAA: Iowa State........................ Notre Dame, Dayton, then any Chicago area schools Rugby: All Blacks "Football": Celtic
  18. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) I think the strangest thing about this whole deal is the picture of the cougar meandering around with people walking literally feet away from him. And the lady who spotted him/her said it was sleeping next to her porch. So it obviously seemed at some sort of ease in its surroundings until it was killed. It just amazes me that the cougar could get that far into Chicago and it isnt seen until it is already there. Maybe we need cougars in the alleys to take care of the strays Here is the picture of the cougar walking around And there is also a story about a possibility of a second cougar in the area, they were looking for it today That picture gives me the willies.
  19. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) so would this scenario be ok... Candidate A runs as a Republican. Loses Republican primary, so then jumps ship to the Green Party. Loses the Green Party Primary, so then runs as a Libertarian. Loses the Libertarian Primary so then runs as an Independent. This certainly didn't happen here... but is it ok for a candidate to bounce around parties until he finds one which he can win in? As a general rule, there is a primary, then a general. That's two elections. Your scenario would require 5, so, its kind of moot.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) Throwing something at the Rattler is likely only to piss it off more and encourage it to strike. True. With a rattlesnake, best to just run away and get some distance. It won't chase you. But I don't think he was being entirely serious, just trying to make a point.
  21. This could just as easily go in the environmental thread... Oil = $115/bbl
  22. I'd be happy with a split in this 2 game set. Road games against some tough cookies. Let's get the W tonight and take the pressure off a bit. Show us you aren't done yet, Jose. GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!
  23. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) Looking at the 'optimist' side of that -- you're plucking out what happens to be the very best stretch of his career, when he was also at his peak productive age, and setting that as a standard for years when he should be on the decline, anyway, and ignoring the injury risk. And the start point in 2005 has to be picked just so -- after a swoon in May but early enough to balance out the wretched August. This sounds more hopeful than anything. Even completely ignoring his previous history, given his age and the injury risk, I don't see how anyone can look at .280/.320/.500 as a reasonable expectation. As a 'best-case' scenario, okay. But no more than that. I don't agree. I think he's done that, and done worse. In between may be his reality, who knows? And I wasn't dismissing the injury risk - I made that a caveat. I also didn't discuss his defense much, which is a huge plus for him. I just don't think you can look at his career averages and say that is where he is at. In a few more years you could.
  24. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 10:01 AM) Our ticket rep has told us you buy single game tickets for the scout and Jim Beam Club. However, I'm not sure if they are made available to the general public, so it's not much difference, but just an FWIW. That's interesting, I hadn't heard that from our rep. I might have to check into it. Thanks.
  25. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 12:51 PM) plus, the people of Connecticut spoke. they wanted Ned Lamont as the Democratic nominee 52-48%. What's wrong with that? Nothing. And there is nothing wrong with Lieberman then running as an independent.
