QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 05:30 PM) @jaysonst: Now hearing Tanaka decision could go all the way till Friday. Clubs not in bidding hearing rumblings he took physical while in LA this month Man, sports media are really phoning it in on this one. We knew that FOREVER ago. I don't even think it was a secret. Clubs want their individual physicals with him, which is why the Wednesday date has been bandied around.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) OMFG WE'VE SEEN THIS INFORMATION A THOUSAND TIMES ALREADY Dude, what part of "all tweets are newsworthy no matter what" don't you understand? I bet you're gonna complain about Sam Waterson's liveblog of the Golden Globes I'm about to post here, too. Welcome to the 21st century, man, this is modern media. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) WFAN Sports Radio @WFAN660 5m Report: Masahiro Tanaka is expected to choose his #MLB team no later than Wednesday. It's already next week in Japan though, sources say.

How Rick Hahn Has Revamped Chicago's Offense
ScottyDo replied to TheChrisSamsa's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) Interesting how the article states that DeAza getting less at bats than Eaton or Viciedo in 2014 is a mistake. Also interesting that it doesn't seem to be allowing for progress from Viciedo. -
How Rick Hahn Has Revamped Chicago's Offense

QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:47 PM) This article on battingleadoff.com does a nice job in laying out just how different the team will look come Opening Day. I'm excited to see this group gel together over the next couple of years. With the right role players and some guys living up to their potential, this team can contend long term. How Rick Hahn Revamped Chicago's Offense Link is a little broken. Just like my buddy with Crohn's, it's missing a colon. Reading now, though. -
I really wish I remembered the details, but I definitely bet, on this board, that if someone did worse than Jeremy Bonderman one year, I'd buy a Bonderman jersey. Might have been Contreras in '07? I did not follow through.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) The Cubs offer was given to Tanaka as 1.05x, where x is the highest bid by the other teams. This was also the Dodgers' formula. Now Tanaka is getting paid $infinity. By two clubs.

I'm still stoked that we managed to land Billy Koch

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) They just reported on the Score that Tanaka tweeted a decision has been made. I think we will hear today. We are pretty positive they are reporting the same mistranslation of the tweet. Read above.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:29 AM) Right. So how is that possible? They go supersonic from chicago? Due to the curvature of the earth and the higher latitude, we're closer to Japan than we look EDIT: If you check it out on Google Earth, it's much more obvious. Stupid Mercator and his s****y projections!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) I can't help but not see the White Sox as the favorite. If you think about the various factors that have been at play here, the White Sox lead in none of them. -Most money? Maybe Cubs? Maybe Yankees? For sure not Sox. -Biggest Japanese communities? LA by far. Sox lead only Arizona among leaders, I would guess. -West Coast oriented? Better than NY, but still not LA. -Winning World Series? Pretty much everyone except the Cubs are ahead of Sox. Maybe they can put together some sort of a package that weaves things together, but I am just not convinced See, the thing about this is: most money /= biggest offer. It's entirely possible that we have thrown out the biggest offer considering the slightly stressed financial situations of the other three teams involved. The first point is a crap shoot as far as I'm concerned. The other three, I agree with.

QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 09:03 PM) Wouldnt it be great if hahn announces the Tanaka 2morrow on csn sportstalk live Would be better if Hahn announces it tonight on Soxtalk so my command and R keys can take a well-deserved nap

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 08:28 PM) The good news is generally when you regress, it is downward. Regression, in the mathematical sense. Like, towards the "true" value.

QUOTE (TitoMB @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 07:52 PM) But seriously, I just read through the last 20 pages. Y'all need to give up on Twitter. That s*** is 100% speculation, all the time. Trouble is, the legit sources all use twitter to pump their articles, too. Can't stop monitoring twitter if you want the absolute latest, but you also need to think critically about who you're going to listen to and why.

My sources say he's signing with the Orioles. They say the main consideration was that he had just bought some black, white and gold spikes that kind of matched the Orioles' spikes.
-
Yeah, until we start hearing "Tanaka has reached an agreement with Team X", we haven't heard anything at all. There's no way that most American journalists, let alone bloggers, have a close enough relationship with Japanese baseball sources that they're getting anything reliable. If they're hearing anything at all, it's from the US clubs and I promise they don't know anything until Tanaka tells them who he's picking.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 06:58 PM) I was following that whole last hour when it looked to be us vs. the Tigers... people running down hallways and so on during the GM meetings. But I've mentioned that offer here before when the topic has come up & I don't think anyone here knew about that... probably just the difference between information on WSI & SoxTalk. I definitely believe it though because KW wanted Cabrera badly, and if the Freddy Garcia deal is any indication I bet he'd have given away all his best pieces there if he had to. I just think the Marlins were in love with Maybin (lots of people were then) and there may have been something to the DTrain salary dump, although back then that was DTrain's first bad season, and obviously the Tigers weren't worried because they immediately extended him. Some people think that DTrain's inclusion got the deal done because it was a dump... I'm not in that camp, I think the Marlins could have dumped him if they wanted to in another deal. I just think the Marlins liked that 6-for-2 deal better than our guys. If things had gone just a liiiittle differently and Miggy landed here, we could be talking about which concourse the Greg Walker statue should be built on

Is this a new thing because so many guys the Sox depending on are new to the system? Like, a closer look in advance of spring training so they've got a better sense of everyone's individual style?

Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
ScottyDo replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I was just wondering this morning what Jenks was up to. Question answered. I'd be down with a MiLB flier (obviously, what's to lose?) -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 01:39 AM) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-los-angel...00213--mlb.html A lot of the same reasons for the Angels not signing Tanaka would seem to apply to the White Sox at this point as well...both teams are at least one year away from being in a realistic position to take on a contract like that with all the other weaknesses both teams have across the board in terms of being "playoff worthy" teams. Huh? The crux of that article appeared to be "the Angels can't keep taking on behemoth swing-and-miss contracts or they'll hit the luxury tax". They talk about how the Angels are in position to "win now", they just don't have the financial wiggle room for another large risk. That doesn't apply to the Sox at all.

QUOTE (timbo @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 06:16 PM) Maybe we dont know for sure It's possible. Tanaka might be the kind of player that we finally break the bank for. But it's unprecedented for the Sox to offer anything like that, so I'm skeptical. That would easily be the biggest contract the Sox have ever given out, or probably offered.
