Sox trade RP Jeff Soptic for 3B Conor Gillaspie
ScottyDo replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 28, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) Using this logic, just about everyone was "close to being cut" last year. I kind of like the framework of the plan, though. I am going to plant seeds of speculation now so that later I can say, "there was speculation". I feel like midway through this season, they might fire Ventura and hire Oney Guillen as his successor. Can I get a second? -

Yeah, BleacherReport links or it didn't happen! -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 27, 2013 -> 08:14 PM) Exactly why Hahn has the advantage. ...what? He has the advantage because people don't want to pay for what he has to sell?

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 03:07 PM) so true. I need to get a grip. Hey, man, embrace the irrational elation! Just admit that it makes little-to-no sense and all is well. Next BP session, you and I can fire up the chat room and rock out to some 85 mph cutters

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 02:46 PM) Sounds like Danks threw well in live BP today. Welcome news. A year of the old sub 4.00 ERA Johnny Danks would be sweet. Just saw this. I admit to being unreasonably excited about a February bullpen session. It might be the caffeine I'm mainlining.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) I really appreciate all of the responses here, you've picked me up. I guess I'm just in a down mood this morning and worried about the future if none of these guys ever amount to much offensively. Maybe I should rephrase my original point. "It sure would be nice if at least one of our younger guys turned into a solid middle of the order hitter this year". Now, can the season start? I'm actually on your side here. Replacing our 3, 4 and 5 hitters all by free agency sounds awfully inefficient. Currently, none of the younger players on our roster are capable of hitting in those spots. Courtney Hawkins is still years away from playing at that level, and Rios, Dunn and Konerko are probably gone before then. Of the players in our system, it seems like Viciedo, Thompson, Hawkins and maybe Mitchell could be middle of the order bats, but we need a couple of them to step up soon or the Sox will be risking a ton of money in the notoriously dangerous FA market. I've got my fingers crossed for a monster -- or at least extremely promising -- season from Viciedo.

Interesting fact: the Sox are now 0-0-2 in zero-run games

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 07:24 PM) this 7th inning "take me out to the ballgame" is the best i've ever heard. Hahaha definitely. You have to go back in time pretty far to find a Casio that sh*tty -

QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) 4.) The Tigers have much more talent than the Sox and it is unlikely that we can compete with them this season. I just watched Castellanos, their LF blast an opposite filed home run off the Phillies Papelbon like he was hitting a hitting practice pitcher. Casteallanos, Austin Jackson and Tori Hunter in the outfield, Prince and Miguel Cabrera at first and third, VMart at DH , etc, gives them a frmidable line-up. Then of course their rotation is stronger than the Sox. There will be more Detroit fans at our home games vs. Detroit this season than Sox fans. Yeah, they'll definitely win the division by ~12 games, just like last year. You can tell because of that spring training home run! This one time, Joe Borchard hit a home run, and that wasn't even spring training! You can imagine my excitement -

QUOTE (onedude @ Feb 24, 2013 -> 10:46 PM) Where will you be going to school? I assume you're looking to rent? I can tell you where is good and bad. U of I College of Med. It's down by Methodist and St. Francis. And, yup! Looking to rent.

Hey, never been in the SLaM before but figured this would be the place to go with questions like this. I'm moving to Peoria for school this year (August) and I've only ever been there once. No idea what areas/neighborhoods I should look into. I will be crazy busy (med school) so I probably won't spend a TON of time at home, and will hopefully be living with my wife if she can get a hardship transfer from her work. We're ~30 years old with modest-to-moderate income. Any advice on where to look would be extremely awesome!

QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Feb 24, 2013 -> 01:09 PM) For my money - they need more of an exciting team. very stale, boring team going on right now. It's not so bad if you dig pitching. Unfortunately, if the saying is true, that's not what chicks dig. If you find a chick that digs pitching, defense and SABR, put a ring on that.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 24, 2013 -> 09:00 AM) Are you having a bad day, Russ? All I did was make a simple, one sentence statement that the Giant GM (Brian Sabean) is very good. I didn't even criticize the trade. I have never seen Gillaspie play. It doesn't look like whining to me as I re-read my post, nor was that intended. If that was truly a non sequitur...stop posting non sequiturs. I love lamp. -

QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 23, 2013 -> 09:07 AM) Giants GM is better than Sox GM. Yeah, man, we're really gonna miss Soptic. We're really short on flame-throwing relievers but our 3b depth is fantastic. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 06:28 PM) Honestly, Hahn has been a pretty straight shooter. I have to imagine that they honestly believe that Gillaspie is solid defensively. Could be. He's always struck me as a pretty earnest guy, but he's still a GM. Part of his job description is sales. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 06:25 PM) To be fair, Morel's only been about average with the glove according to UZR in his time in the bigs as well. Yeah but I think the fact that the GM who just acquired Gillaspie used such meh language to describe his defense is maybe a little alarming. Despite Morel's results, I'd wager Hahn would describe his defense as "plus" -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 06:20 PM) And I'd bet we'll see the exact same thing with Gillaspie. I dunno, the fact that Hahn described Gillaspie's 3b defense as "solid-average" makes me think he's probably worse than Morel defensively. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) If that was the case...then either the Sox should have a couple years of below-average DL appearances and a couple years of above-average DL appearances as injuries pile up...or the Sox should wind up underperforming their projections because they're playing too many guys who are hurt. Neither of these are the case so far. It just seems like every year we hear that Konerko had been injured for months of the season. Maybe that's just two years. BUT STILL! We went through it with Dunn, too. That wouldn't necessarily result in backloading DL trips if they recover over the offseason. Also, if, say, Konerko regularly plays injured it would be incorporated into his projections. I'm not married to the idea that this is true, but I am not at all convinced that Herm Schneider is magic either.
-
I'm not entirely convinced that our DL numbers aren't low because we have a baddish farm system and our starters like to play injured for some reason.
