Who and how much would you give for Giancarlo Stanton?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 03:19 PM) We face the same problem if/when he gets hurt. Have there ever been any actual data supporting the idea that weight and health are positively correlated? Or are these concerns strictly based on his throwing motion? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) -Latin America- The situation in LA has gotten so much better. The organization needs LA to be competitive, they are very excited about it. The Sox could see three more kids from LA and their Dominican Academy stay in the states, though they brought a lot of them to spring training for the first time this year. They hadn't done so in the past because their LA system kids had been so bad. Bell stated that Cruz (an IF), Otano, and Rodriguez (both OFs) had the chance to stay in the states right away, as well as Olacio. He really like Olacio, but he got "gassed" by the end of the season. Bell also mentioned 17 year old Santos, Otano, Perralta, and Artiga (sp?). They also have other kids they like, but can't talk about because they are undergoing "investigations". Great stuff! Any elaboration on what the bolded means?

QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 02:34 AM) lowering prices to appease non existent fans= business death I mean, if we're to believe the fans, they exist but think games are too expensive. Setting prices at the point where supply and demand intersect = high school economics.

Yearly Baseball Prospectus PECOTA Season forecast

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) I'm with you. I'm not saying Keppinger is a sure thing, but there is absolutely no reason not to assume it's his job to lose. The guy was .329/.367/.439 last year, and Brent Morel was .245/.287/.366 in his NON-injured year. Yeah, Keppinger is probably not good at defense at third, but let's not forget that Morel hasn't exactly lived up to the hype of being the great defender we thought he was -- he has essentially graded out as a scratch defender in his time in the majors so far by UZR and I think the eye test has matched. I'm not saying he can't be better than has been both offensively and defensively (our samples are small in both cases), but there's really nothing there so far to suggest otherwise. So in a year where you claim to be competing, there is no reason at all to force playing time for Morel to see what you have. Keppinger has got to lose the job first. I don't think anyone is suggesting that we play Morel regardless of how he performs (at least, I haven't been). But if he shows a strong bat for a while, I'm inclined to believe that last season's abysmal start was truly due to his back and give him another shot. In a more perfect world, the Sox are better off with a good Morel at 3b and Keppinger as a super-util. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 19, 2013 -> 04:22 PM) Or D-backs to the AL. They could have had the Rockies as an interleague partner. Col-Arz SD-Sea LA-LAA SF-Oak Hou-Tex Chi-Chi Cin-Cle Mil-Min Stl-KC Pit-Det Atl-Tor NY-NY Was-Bal Phi-Bos Mia-TB Done. That doesn't make sense. Then you still have a division with 4 teams (NL West) and a division with 6 (NL Central) EDIT: Unless you have the Astros moving to the NL West? I still don't understand how this is any better.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 19, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) I hope you're right, but the way they want more games within the division so there are more games within the same time zone for TV revenue purposes, it scares me they'll just blow it up and make it even more regional. This is year one of Astros and Rangers in the same division. I think the Diamondbacks would have moved to the AL, but MLB wanted to use Astros/Rangers as a test to see what happens with attendance and TV ratings when they play each other head-to-head 19 games a year. If there's a noticeable spike over the next 5 years, then we'll see what happens. Personally, I would have moved the D-backs to the AL, eliminated divisions, and played a more balanced league schedule with 18 interleague games, and top 5 of 15 qualify for postseason. I think the decision to move the Astros over the D-backs has more to do with the fact that one division had 6 teams while another had 4. D-backs wouldn't have fixed that.

I also would have found it interesting to break down why the PECOTA projections consistently underrate our pitchers' performances independent of IP. I think that's true, though I haven't looked. -

Excellent article. I'm surprised they didn't pick up on the joking tone of the article they lambasted, though. -

QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Feb 15, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) The article stated that "significant progress needs to be made" I take that as a red flag, even in February. Literally no one is throwing higher than 90 right now. At least, they shouldn't be. There are no red flags yet, maybe an extremely pale pink at the reddest. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 14, 2013 -> 06:02 PM) I can't wait until a pitcher who is working on locating his fastball early in Spring Training gives up 7 hits in a row and the Sox give up 17 runs and people on here start freaking out about Spring f***ing Training I'm pretty sure that's what The Rite of Spring was written about

Most boring & uneventful offseason you can recall?

QUOTE (TomSeaverFan @ Feb 13, 2013 -> 04:14 AM) It's a good thing the Sox re-signed Peavy. I think had they not done that, the team would be in deep trouble. I do hope the team can overcome the loss of AJ in the lineup. I can understand giving Flowers a chance. I hope the Sox scouts that think he can play are correct. If he is a black hole in the lineup and Beckham doesn't improve drastically we could be in for some anemic offensive performances on occasion. But as far as the offseason ... signing Peavy was huge. At least now on paper the Sox have very competitive starting pitching. I do hope Robin and Cooper figure ways to get these guys to deliver 7 innings reliably. Five-plus innings doesn't cut it with our bullpen. I'm curious whether you mean that our bullpen is bad in general or just not set up for long relief? Because I think our bullpen is going to be pretty good. No bullpen is set up to regularly succeed for 4 innings a game, but all of them have to do it occasionally. For what it's worth, the average Sox starter lasted 6.2 innings last year. No idea where that ranks in baseball, but approaching 7 innings seems pretty good. EDIT: For some reason, B-R and Fangraphs have different stats here, but they're roughly similar. AL average start was 5.2 innings. Sox starters were 5th in the AL in innings pitched, but only 20 total innings behind the leader. -
QUOTE (jhonnydanks @ Feb 12, 2013 -> 12:52 PM) don't stop get it get it I like it, but don't we need to start first? EDIT: I regret this post. I have no right to question anyone's desire to get it get it, whether or not stoppage has occurred.

QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 11, 2013 -> 09:29 AM) I'm happy for Morel to be healthy, but he hasn't earned a chance at the MLB level given the roster's current composition. I mean, I am relatively satisfied with Keppinger at 3b but it's not like he's the answer to all our 3b prayers. Really, what's the opportunity cost of giving Morel some time?

2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread
ScottyDo replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 7, 2013 -> 05:30 PM) Obviously you can't bank on it...but it would be great if Morel got a clean bill of health and was able to play 110-120 games healthy. The way he played was more due to a bad back than just being bad at baseball. Agreed. I have felt (silently) all off-season that Morel deserved another shake. His minor league numbers, and early major league ones, were too promising to be as awful as he was last April, especially with a ready-made explanation like back problems. -
QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) My name is Steve. I don't know this Greg person of whom you speak. However, if some of you believed that he was banned, I can only assume that he has his own opinions, and that they are probably not shared by the admins. It wasn't his opinions that were the problem, it was the obstinance, harping and unresponsiveness. In my experience, any opinion can stand on this board as long as you're willing to get challenged. Also, I kind of like Greg despite hating his posting style and agreeing with almost none of his opinions.

QUOTE (Cali @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 11:04 PM) Here's the Tigers Preview from Yahoo... Also done by Passan http://sports.yahoo.com/news/no--7-tigers-...-001753162.html I was pretty much with him until he said the Tigers had the best rotation in the division "by a long shot". You can argue that their rotation is better than the Sox', but not by a whole lot. -

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) His name came up on bleacherreport.com and on White Sox Weekly this past Saturday. He is a LH hitting 2B from StL. Isn't Bleacher Report completely fan-generated material?
-
QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 12:47 PM) What it boils down to is this, are the Sox better with Beckham at 2d, Keppinger at 3rd and Rios in the OF, or Keppinger at 2d, Olt at 3d and Danks in the OF. I kinda like the latter, although Id prefer Carpenter (from Stl) and 2d, Keppinger at 3d.... I'm confused where the Carpenter stuff is coming from, and who would be playing 2b in that scenario?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 08:19 PM) What I don't understand is how the White Sox are going to get out of this middle-of-the-pack rut they are in without committing to a rebuild or spending their way out. In part, by drafting and scouting better, and waiting until the window for contention is actually gone before abandoning hope.
