  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 06:31 PM) I think the extreme side of the argument, Dodgers and Rangers going bankrupt, was introduced by Balta and not me. The charge that the fans are fickle without looking at the lack of success during the 30 year tenure of Chairman Reinsdorf I don't think is fair. That is simply not an accurate characterization of what you said. A) You said you think Reinsdorf needs to go because of lack of historical performance. B) Balta said other teams are in similar or worse historical situations that might still be considered decent. C) Your response was that Balta must therefore be happy with Reinsdorf. Point C is the logical leap that is nonsensical and disingenuous. There are plenty of other positions Balta could take, but you have painted him into the one that most extremely opposes your position. This is an example of the type of argumentation that irritates people, and part of why much of the board argues with you so vehemently. EDIT: Sorry to hijack the thread, I just thought that needed to be stated.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 05:47 PM) I take it you are happy with ownership. Marty, I hope this isn't construed as a personal attack, just a critique of your argument style, but you tend to do this quite frequently: You'll set up camp on an extreme side of an argument, present extremely contestable arguments, then when people disagree with your assessment, presume that they must be supporting the extreme opposite of your position. There is plenty of room to be somewhat unhappy with ownership and disagree with your position that Reinsdorf must go. Your argument style is very offputting sometimes.
  3. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) What did they win? Waiting for them already to have won something is a silly line in the sand for any fan base to draw. The "winning" excuse only takes you up to pennant contention, and then why WOULDN'T you want to be there for the fun part? "I will only come for the 10 games after they have wrapped up the pennant?" What?
  4. QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 05:50 PM) Apparently, Yahoo Sports sucks them ballz. The home/away splits they're talking about are for Carlos Gonzalez, not Dayan Viciedo
  5. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 4, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) http://web.archive.org/web/20050729095038/...w.bendavis.org/ There is no way that webpage was created at any point after 1978
  6. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:32 PM) Computers do not agree with you guys and say Sox are one of the least improved teams this offseason. See table in this article. For what it's worth -- also on the list of least improved teams: the team that signed AJP
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) AJ was worse than usual at stopping the ball, but better than usual throwing runners out. Throwing a runner out takes a runner out of scoring position and gets an out, so that's a big impact. Well, it's not like he was GREAT at that...just better than pathetic
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:08 PM) No he hasn't If we're going to get technical for funsies, neither has AJP
  9. I'd like to see a veteran backup signed, but when do you give your prospects consistent playing time if not when their aging predecessor hits free agency?
  10. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 12:16 AM) For one year? Yeah, there is not a GM in baseball who would go with Flowers. Well, assuming it was a vacuum choice, obviously AJ is more likely to produce offensive numbers this season. However, if they had Flowers in the waiting, no longer developing, and capable of providing better defense, comparable power and a better walk rate immediately at a fraction of the cost...I bet plenty of GM's would make the same choice as Hahn. There weren't exactly droves of suitors out there for AJ. That said, my sentimental half will miss him and his dickishness.
  11. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 04:11 PM) What's the point of baseball if you're not even going to try? I've said this before and I'll say it again: bring out the monster trucks. US Cellular in 2013 + Gravedigger = match made in heaven. I don't think number of moves is a very good measuring stick for effort, nor is effort a good measuring stick for whether or not a decision makes sense. Standing pat is a decision, as is waiting a little bit to see what happens in the FA market.
  12. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 02:53 PM) Hey Ricky, keep sitting on your eggs all day & pretty soon they're going to hatch. It's great how we've gone from under the radar to completely off it. I want Kenny back. This is like when Terry Ryan left the Twins & all hell broke loose. Where's my Kenny? Kenny, the joke is over. I miss you Kenny. We get it now, you really were the best, and your absence has made us all realize how great you were. Please come back. We need a real GM that isn't a-scared to make a move. And please don't shout back "Peavy" because that was all him; he left god knows how many millions on the table to stick around here. He made a bad business decision that is going to work out great for the Sox, but Peavy gets all the credit for that one. Keppinger is it for Hahn, time to pull the plug IMO. This might stand as the biggest overreaction I've ever seen. Can we at least give him a baseball game before throwing him under the bus?
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 02:28 PM) I am thinking of areas that could be improved and trying to think how money will help fill that hole. So far I'm kind of at a blank. Well, we could trade for a player with a bigger contract if we are currently spending less on payroll.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 12:57 PM) Developing players means you have to play them and take the pain that learning curves bring. It is what makes them better. Robin Ventura sucked offensively his first year. Viciedo had a better overall offensive season than Magglio Ordonez had his first full year. Just remember, you are one guy that wants the Sox to totally rebuild, yet you can't take any growing pains without constantly complaining about it. I agree with this. Contention doesn't mean abandoning player development.
  15. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 12:48 PM) http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1451542...f-aj-pierzynski I stopped reading at "unmitigated disaster". Did you write that?
  16. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:45 PM) Starting pitching was not an area of weakness, besides, re-signing Jake only maintains the status quo, doesn't improve the team. Signing Jake vs. not signing Jake are your two scenarios, though. Signing him is clearly the better of the two scenarios, and money was spent to do that.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:35 PM) Except Ramirez contract is less than half of what Bourn is looking for. Even if they pick up the option for 2017, it is about $30 million less over the life of the deal. And defense is arguably more important at Alexei's position
  18. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:32 PM) This kinda reminds me of when the Sox thought Karkovice was ready to replace Fisk. Plus, Kark's first two full seasons he put up offensive numbers almost identical to Fisk's last full season.
  19. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:32 PM) This kinda reminds me of when the Sox thought Karkovice was ready to replace Fisk. Well, AJ's no hall of famer, and you can't just sit on Flowers forever. Gotta find out at some point, and that point is when AJ reaches FA.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:29 PM) Probably not in the sense that they're looking to move him, but I could guess the 3 main guys who they won't trade right now are Sale, Peavy, and Keppinger, and two of those are because they have contracts hot off the press. I doubt they'd trade Alexei either since we don't have even the vaguest notion of a replacement for him. But your point stands.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:17 PM) Tyler had 12 BB in 153 PAs. AJ had 28 in 520. That'd be 41 for Tyler in as many PA's, and Flowers had extremely choppy playing time...not totally out of the question, as last year was the most AJ had ever walked.
  22. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:03 PM) I hope you're right. All I see from Flowers is a pretty good defensive catcher who strikes out a TON. With major power, as well
  23. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) It's funny how you make such a good point yet a group on the board will dispute it just because it's a Marty34 post. The dude had a 96 OPS+ last year, yet people think he's a superstar bat in waiting. Well, now it's a Steve point so I'll argue with that instead 96 OPS+ with a lot of extreme streakiness. You can look at a young, inexperienced player who put up a month of 168 OPS+ and think his ceiling is extraordinarily high. He's absolutely inconsistent, so there's nobody saying his bat is perfect, but it's the "in the waiting" part that makes our position reasonable.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 10:59 AM) So are you willing to potentially waste a couple of months on a "maybe"? How many games are you willing to lose trying to figure out something, when we already know where he can play? I'm not saying we should do anything about it, I'm just saying it does maybe matter as to why. If, theoretically, someone could figure it out, they might consider putting him in RF again. I also wouldn't be against playing him in RF every once in a while just to see what happens.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 09:59 AM) Does it really matter how or why? The fact is Dayan was WAY better in LF. Well, it kind of does. There's still a question as to whether or not the improvement was due to experience rather than a natural predilection for one over the other. That's relevant because of his arm strength, which would profile him as a right fielder.
