3rd Phoenix PD officer killed this year
QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) I knew officer Erfle. Sad to have his life end so tragically and stupid. http://www.kpho.com/news/14141284/detail.html How sad. If people wonder why cops get quick to lose their tempers and overreact at time, its situations like this that should be remembered. This stuff is in the back of officers minds all of the time. RIP

Cook County looking at a potential 2.75 point sales tax increase
QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 10:00 AM) mods/admins, topic subject should read.. Cook County looking at a potential 11% sales tax rate. unless we want to mislead people?? It's not misleading. The people of the City of Chicago are looking at paying an 11% sales tax rate. The people of Cook County are not looking at the rate, because there are people who are not in the City of Chicago, who will not be paying that rate. The residents of Cook County who are outside of Chicago, will not be paying the City of Chicago portion of the sales tax.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 09:23 AM) The kid got exactly what he deserved. If you start to resist and fight off the cops, they are going to have to take control of the situation in one form or another. Judging by the questions he was asking, and the way he reacted when he was asked to leave, he was looking for the attention and had this pretty well planned out. If this is true, it only ads fuel to the fire in my eyes that he planned it. http://www.starbanner.com/article/20070918...3/BREAKING_NEWS

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 11:01 PM) Where do they roll back? Social programs might be tough to cut. As it is, the Section 8 housing money was only budgeted enough money to cover 11 months of the grant programs it offers 12 months of the year. A lot of landlords are getting stiffed their money this month. I ride the train with tons of government employees. I know straight from their mouths how much effort most of our government agencies put in. A lack of profit motive means that there is zero motivation to be effectient and it shows. Lets just say that 90% of us would be fired for what passes a typical day in the federal workplace.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 09:02 AM) So you think if Emmitt Smith or Dan Marino were charged with 10 felonies they wouldn't be all over the front page? It would be even bigger news if they had killed their ex-wife and her lover and gotten away with it. And I did like how you picked that one line out of things, and ignored the rest of it.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 01:12 AM) You're the one that seems to think that the Clinton fundraising scandal is being glossed over. Alan B Fabian was the National Finance Co Chair and key fundraiser for the Romney campaign. He was also indicted for 23 counts of fraud in Maryland last month, about the same time as the Hsu story broke. Hillary Clinton returned both the money donated by Hsu, but also the money raised by him. Romney returned the $2300 donation that Fabian made, but none of the other money raised by him. If you search Fabian and Romney in Google News search you come up with 36 hits, half of them blogs. If you search Hsu and Clinton in Google News search you come up with 3,545 hits, clearly swept under the rug because Hillary runs as a Democrat. Compared to the Larry Craig story, the Hsu story WAS swept under the rug. But not because Hillary is a Democrat, but because given the choice between a fundraising scandal, and a politician soliciting sex in a bathroom - most Americans are tuning in to see what happens between men's room stall walls, and not between the lines in a campaign's ledger sheet. I wish they would report the Romney scandal as front page news. I would love to see the current fundraising system exposed to the light of day for all to see the cockroaches that swarm underneath of it. One thing I do want to point out as a major difference between the Fabian and the Hsu stuff, is that the Clinton's have been busted for this kind of stuff before. The reason the OJ story is front page news everywhere is not because he robbed and threatened some people, it is because he already has been in major trouble with the law before. If this were the first time he had been in trouble, no one would care nearly as much as they do now. The Clintons, and major top Democrats, have been there and done this before, and nothing seems to have changed. Even if you discount the 90's stuff as just having Bill, Kerry, and Gore involved, you can't discount her former finance director being indicted two years ago on campaign finance charges. The same stuff keeps happening over and over again, yet there is no big deal here according to most. Do you really think if the Bush's had this much question about how they got their electoral money, it wouldn't be front page news?

Sox Vs. Royals
I was really glad to see Floyd recover well after a crappy first inning. The first two hits off of him were balls that Joe Crede probably gets to. At worst he gets to one of them, and that alone changes the whole complexion of his outing. Even including the first inning, I was really happy to see Gavin didn't lose his composure, and instead gave the Sox five scoreless innings after the 3 run first. Those are the kinds of little things you look for to see if a guy is turning the corner mentally. When Garland got to the point that he didn't let giving up runs bother him is when those four run innings started to turn into one run innings, and instead of going 5 innings, Garland was pitching into the 8th most nights. Floyd has work to do, but the signs are good.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) well, I really don't think Masset would be good in the pen. From what I have seen, he is much better as the game goes on. However, I really don't want us to lose him but he is out of options. I think Broadway could very well be the 6th man in the pen as the mop up guy and spot starter. I would have no problem with a pen of: Jenks, Thornton, MacDougal, Wasserman, Logan, and Broadway. However, if Mac, Thornton, and the rest of the pen continue their struggles next season, hopefully one of Oneli Perez, Dewon Day, Carlos Vasquez, or even Sisco could come up not suck. Lance Broadway will not be a reliever for the Sox next year. If he doesn't make the team as as starter, he will be in Charlotte. There are too many guys with no options who would be in front of him for the pen, such as Sisco and Floyd.

There are two different distinctive interest rates at play here. There is the overnight rate at which the fed lends to banks, and the discount rate, which banks lend to each other at, and which forms the basis for prime rate. The consumer end of things is fine. The discount rate does not need to be changed. Up until today I agreed with Bernankes moves of the Fed stepping in at the discount window and providing liquidity to the system both through the system, and through lower interest rates. Putting more money into the hands of consumers at a time when commodity prices are at record high levels accross the board (Gold 28 year highs, Grains at multi-decade highs, crude oil all time high etc) is a stupid idea, because all it does it create more opportunity for price increases. The banking system needs more cash, consumers do not.

THIS DATE IN WHITE SOX HISTORY: SEPT 14/Fisk, Slugfest, Rocket lit up
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 03:01 PM) Weren't we there? Yup. RF stands right next to the Indians pen with Keith. We sat out there and watched the Sox pen door open, and the coach come out with his hands in the air with the expression of "Who the f*** are you calling for??" on his face.

THIS DATE IN WHITE SOX HISTORY: SEP 18TH/Kerr, 9-11 ceremony,
The return game after 9-11 was an emotional game. I knew the woman who sang "God Bless America" and it was probably the best I have ever heard that song done live. I'll never forget it.

IIRC, the 1997 Fisk number retirement game was also the infamous Terry Bevington pointing to the empty bullpen game.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 02:49 PM) From what we have seen for years, the budget is based on profits, driven in large part by season ticket sales, on a post-facto basis. 2007 season ticket sales were a small bit below 2006, from what I understand. So it seems unlikely the team would be willing to increase payroll in any significant way. That is the assumption I am going on... but if your information says that is incorrect, that they are willing to go up, then that's great. That's where I am looking. Without seeing the final revenue and profit numbers until April or March of next year, I am not going to pretend to be for sure of what the total will be. Knowing from experience that the Sox are a break even organization, and seeing that attendence is going to be down this year, I would guess we are going to see about $100 million if we are lucky.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 02:39 PM) If they "regret" this move, then we are all in a HEAP of trouble. Pumping more money into a situation where you already have too much money chasing too few goods is the worst possible solution for this economy. The only dumber move you can make is to raise rates in a contractionary situation. Mark my words now, inflation will hit 5% by the Presidential election.

I agree 100%. They should be looking at the overnight rate, but there are way too many inflationary factors out there right now with record commodity prices all over the place. They are going to regret this move. Hopefully it is the only cut they make, but if they start out with a 50 Bps cut, that tells me more cuts are on the way.

I guess it was conviently ignored in the mainstream that dispite the reporters not knowing what Thompson was talking about, Fred Thompson actually knew what he was talking about.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 01:10 PM) He strikes out twice as much as he walks. For a potential leadoff hitter that some are either annointing him, or wish him to be, not good. If he has good pitch selection and can work the count like Lofton can and he can hit for average like Lofton can, that's one thing. He hasn't thus far and he didn't in the minors. They should be shooting higher than Jerry Owens as a starting CF on a team they want to contend, and I believe they will. They can shoot as high as they want, its a matter of what they can afford. With the amount of payroll they already have on the 2008 teams, they are going to have to have two to three guys in the starting line up making close to league minimum to make their budget work. They also are going to have to deal at least one of Contreras or Garland to make things work. Get used to seeing guys like Owens, Richar, and Fields, because they are going to be a necesity for the Sox in 2008, not matter what people want.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) Because I am often pessimistic about players that I'm not high on, like Owens, Pods, etc. I'm very happy with Fields power so far. The one thing that's been disappointing is his speed. I expected a little more speed getting out of the box based on his minor league steal numbers. He's a guy with a big swing who takes a while to uncork after letting loose. His first to third speed tells you how quick he is.

Israeli exhibit has visitors walking on Arabic flags!
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 08:34 PM) Um the Embassy takeover was some pissed Iranians who were upset at our support of the Shah and his secret police. So that was a little of 'reap what you sow'. And the rest of this isn't directed towards you SS, I just didn't want to double post in the thread back to back. And we haven't been just under attack by Muslim extremists in the US and the world. Perhaps Eric Rudolph is worth remembering as well, the Army of God, the ultra-rightist Christians who bomb and shoot doctors/medical clinics, the KKK (a Christian extremist organization), the Christian Identity movement...and a little from Wiki: Clayton Waagner claimed to be on a "mission from God" when he set out with his family on a trip across the United States, intent on killing multiple abortion providers. Ultimately he mailed envelopes, falsely claiming they contained anthrax, to more than 500 abortion facilities, as part of the larger, and unconnected, anthrax attacks of 2001. On 11 September 2006 David McMenemy, who has pleaded guilty to second degree arson allegedly attempted a suicide bombing, deliberately crashing his car into the Edgerton Women’s Health Center in Davenport, Iowa. According to a court affidavit, McMenemy swore under oath that he mistakenly thought the clinic performed abortions. The National Liberation Front of Tripura is a Fundamentalist Christian militant group in India, demanding a separate Christian state. Allegedly funded by the Baptist Church of Tripura, it is accused of ethnic cleansing and bombings that have killed hundreds, as well as forcing gunpoint conversions. They were declared a terrorist organization under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in 2002. Poso, Jakarta (2000) On July 26, 2007, 17 Christians were convicted of religion-inspired terrorism under Indonesian law. A Christian mob attacked, murdered, and beheaded two Muslim fishermen in September 2006, reportedly as retaliation for a previous court ordered and legally sanctioned execution in 2006 of three Christians convicted of leading a militant group which killed hundreds of Muslims in Poso in 2000. In addition to the seventeen Christian defendants found guilty of "acts of terrorism by the use of violence", two defendants received fourteen year sentences for their main roles in the killings, while ten were sentenced to twelve year terms. Five other defendants in separate hearings received eight year sentences for their part in the disposal of the bodies. So, perhaps it isn't just Muslims that are rioting and beheading in parts of the world over perceived injustices. Fundamentalists of all stripes are f***ing nutty and it helps to not make exemptions for fundies of a certain religion. That was pretty much my point, without the liberal cut and paste usage, and the antiChristian bias.... It doesn't matter who is in charge. There are always going to be radicals who feel that they have been wronged, and are going to take extreme measures to right those wrongs. If you move the Presidency to another point on the political spectrum, you'll just piss off someone else. For the Muslim radicals, as long as we are Christian nation who supports Judaism, we are going to be a target.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) In front of what, exactly? They certainly aren't in front of any ratings chases. They are a target because they are really bad at news. The target of the left, as the only network on the right?
