QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 08:27 PM) Joe Sudbay over at Americablog made me chuckle: tee hee hee. At least we can be sure the very principled McCain, Romney, Giuliani, Duncan Hunter. . . and the rest of the GOP knuckleheads won't be confirming this UnAmerican defender of an Iranian front organization any time soon. Sweet, so that means you guys are all anti-ACLU now right?

GM on strike
Well early news in is that there has been a tentative agreement reached in the GM strike. One more thing I wanted to share is that I have seen the justification of Toyota and the like as they build cars in America, and pay American workers. Finally I found some numbers. If you include all compensation that both employees receive (wages, health care, pension, stock plans etc) the average Toyota worker makes $45 an hour. The average GM worker makes $73 an hour, when everything is factored in. I have asked before, and I will ask again, why is there no movement of people against Toyota, the way that there is against Wal-Mart. Really we are talking about the exact same business model and techniques. They both look for markets where they can under cut price and wages. They both are permanently removing higher paying jobs from the US. As a matter of a fact, looking at the numbers we should be more outraged at Toyota, because they are taking upper-middle class jobs (well heck upper class jobs according to some of the Dems) and replacing them with jobs that pay on average, with benefits included, about $60,000 LESS than the jobs they are offering. Where are the Stop Toyota campaigns? Where are the exposes on CNN? Where are the union protests? Why are they striking GM, when they should be striking Toyota? Seriously, I'd love to hear an explanation of why Toyota is immune.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) It's called the joy of beating expectations. You get the press to report what you were expected to do and everyone's proud of you for beating it. Like when George W. Bush graduated high school. I do understand what they are doing, I just found it funny they were both so obscenely off of each others numbers. Its not like they were a million or two off, both were giving difference of near 20 million dollars... Like they don't know what the other is doing, or what they are doing.

GM on strike
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 02:12 PM) The worst, to me, is their reserve policy for staff. I don't know if they still do it, but at one time, they were paying a whole bunch of line staff full salary and benefits to basically ride the bench in case they were needed. They are also guarenteed 8 hours of pay if they show up for work. It doesn't matter if an assembly line breaks, or something else happens, they can't even send them home.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
Evan Bayh was just on MSNBC talking about his Hillary endorsement, it was the usual stuff you would expect in that situation. The interesting part was they had a little blurp about rumors starting to circulate around Demo circles of a Hill/Bayh ticket... I did not hear if they actually asked Bayh about it or not.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 01:20 PM) I still get scared that I am going ot f*** something up on that cycle and kill the guys but that is really the way to go. The older guy is out of this stuff, younger guy a year more. Serious advice to all... Write it down. That way in two hours when you are too damned tired and worn out to remember what you did before, it is there for you to check. It makes things much easier.

Who is the juicer in your neighborhood?
I wonder what names will trickle out of this raid? http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/113546.html WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 Sports leagues seeking the names of players implicated in a huge steroid raid must wait until more of the operation can be revealed, U.S. federal agents said. "It's not going to be something where the DEA says, 'Yeah, come over and take a look,'" Rusty Payne, a spokesman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, told The Washington Post. "There's going to be serious, serious (Department of Justice) involvement." Federal agents Monday revealed an 18-month investigation into steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs coming from China. The investigation resulted in raids in 10 countries, including the United States where 124 arrests were made in 27 states, most of them in the last week. Client lists were seized and sports leagues, including major league baseball, want to know if their players are implicated, the Post said. No well-known professional athletes have been connected to the raids, dubbed Operation Raw Deal, Payne told the Post.

GM on strike
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 09:09 AM) Let's be clear - people might "buy American" if American car companies made cars that were at least as good as their Japanese counterparts. Unfortunately, they do not. And no matter what the excuse is, American workers are going to lose jobs. If Japanese car companies paid what their American counterparts did in wages, benefits, and pensions, they wouldn't be able to provide the quality that they do. What are jobs in Detroit worth to you? (meaning people in general)

GM on strike
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) Actually they are - and Americans are being employed to make them. And they aren't paid NEARLY was the Big Three counterparts are being paid. The factories have been intentionally located in lower wage areas of the country, usually the deep south. They also don't pay anywhere near the health coverage, and no pension plan. Wal-Mart does it, and it is the target of MSNBC investigation specials. Toyota does it, and it is good business. Keep in mind, only one of those two companies is making record profits quarter after quarter...

Stocks and investing thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) So gas prices are going to suck. CNN FN had a guy on from Alaron (Chicago-based derivatives firm) and their energy department. Gas will go about a quarter higher this year. And they are projecting gas hitting $4 a gallon in 2008, and $5 a gallon in 2009. Interesting to note: its that $4 a gallon mark where many hybrid vehicles start to be cost effective within the first couple years (as opposed to 4 or 5 years down the road, at $2.50/gallon gas). And light hybrids are already there. I am really starting to think about picking one up next year. Phil Flynn. Anyways, it really isn't a good sign that prices have rallied as we have left the summer driving season. I could believe seeing $5 gas next summer. We still haven't had anything really bad happen, and we are still that high. One bad thing, and it is going to get ugly.

Jerry Owens
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) Owens is already better than Pods in every aspect of the game other than doubles/gap hitting. Except cheaper, younger and less prone to injury. Let me preface this by saying I really like the kid. After reading all of the reports on him since we traded for him, I never expected to see him in Chicago, let alone contributing. He has really surprised me, More so than anyone else sans Ehrin Wasserman. Everyday it seems like his routes get better in CF. He has make up speed, and doesn't really seem to get fooled on too many balls. Now his arm sucks, but we all knew that coming in. At the plate, someone needs to get the kid on an HGH program or something, but if someone can teach him how to bunt even decently, he could be a .300 hitter. If he gets on at a .350-.375 clip, he will steal in the 70-80 base range. I haven't been impressed by his technique, or his reads of pitchers as a base stealer, so even the almost 30 steals and 80ish% success rate from this year could be improved upon. I just think he is now the guy that is going to be abused because "Chicks dig the long ball". I think we have room for Owens with the power hitters we have in the rest of our line up. I also think for the money he is making, we should get used to him, because he is going to be a guy given a big chance to win a job next year. I know people are imaging Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand in CF, but I will believe it when I see it. Until that point, I really think Jerry is our 2008 starting CF.

Two SoxTalk Icons Meet
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 24, 2007 -> 08:00 PM) Kap, ss2k5 and I brought a championship to SoxTalk with Northside and Tito (Brian, as I call him). I don't know how many of those guys are icons, but we brought a championship to a championship-starved website -- it had been, after all, over a year since the last championship came to SoxTalk. And so we deserve jobs for life, even if we aren't all "icons." (Really, I use the term icon as a joke. Flash first used it to describe our meeting in the chatroom and I got a kick out of it. Kap, ss2k5 and Northside are staples and so they're icons.) I liked them. It was good to be teammates with them. I hope we do it again this year. I've been hounding Flash for awhile now that he's got to be on the team. And you know what? Assuming he has a clue how to swing a bat, he should be a masher because he's big and strong enough. We'll have WSI asking "Where is our Flash Tizzle at?" I can't wait for the softball game next year. You guys really missed out who didn't go. Seriously.
