  1. The money is about right for the numbers that AJ puts up. The best part is that it is basically a 3 year deal, so even if he goes south, we aren't on the hook for a long time.
  2. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 11:05 AM) Not totally sure, but I think it's against the rules for a player to have ownership of any percentage of a team. Perhaps someone here can give chapter and verse on this. What about if it is held in trust until the player retires?
  3. BTW, on behalf of Soxtalk, I do want to thank you for posting these here... There were a lot of fun trips down memory lane.
  4. QUOTE(WCSox @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 10:43 AM) Well, in all fairness, Owens improved dramatically over the past month and a half or so. He actually looks like a semi-legitimate leadoff hitter right now (although I'm not sure I'd trust him to play at that level in that role next season). I might be one of the few people here, but I do like Jerry Owens.

I'd have to say the Christmas episodes are the all-time best.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) Why do people get their own names tattooed on their bodies? Is it in case they forget? There is a joke to go with that... Why do Texans have their names on their beltbuckles? So when they pull their heads out of their asses, they know who they are...
  7. Nice finish... too bad it didn't mean anything.
  8. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 10:11 AM) Well, $30MM is a ginormous amount of money. But, A-Rod in a Sox uniform - holy s*** - that would pump some serious $$ AND excitement on the southside, because his chase of Bonds would be done in a Sox uni. And everything else aside, the guy is the best player in the game right now, bar none. Well according the rumors that were putting him on the northside... He wants an ownership share of the team he goes to. According to the 2007 Forbes numbers the Sox are valued at $381 million. If they could come up with a small minority share, you could knock off $10-20 million, depending on how big you are talking. Plus a guy like Rodriguez pays for himself at the turnstyle. The Sox know this. Think about how many Arod jersies would get sold? I doubt it will happen, but then again knowing Kenny's history, and JRs business savvy, maybe it isn't that crazy afterall...
  9. FWIW... my list Jon Garland Scott Podsednik Ryan Bukvich Mike Myers Luis Terrero Mike MacDougal Heath Phillips David Aardsma Andy Gonzalez Alex Cintron Brian Anderson I think Contreras sticks around, as they won't be able to find anyone to take his contract.
  10. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 09:43 AM) Overreaction to inflation by Paul Volcker, which was heavily endorsed by President Reagan pretty much destroyed the industrial north in the early 80s, and did much to put in place this unhealthy, horsehit two tiered ecnomy that we have now. I never understood the petrified horror our economic hochos have for inflation. This country has no history of hyper inflation like the Weimer Republic of Germany, but does have periodic depressions and severe recessions. I usually steer clear of money talk, since I have so little, but our policymakers have been screwing the middle class since the days of the oil embargo in the 70s. It wasn't inflation that killed northern industry. It was superior foreign competition.
  11. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 09:34 AM) I read somewhere this morning where Pods is telling teammates he wants to move on. Lets see, you are stealing money instead of bases, fans still treat you like a rockstar and you're not happy. Good luck next year Pods, look forward to your stint with the Long Island Ducks in 2009. Pods wants to move on? Isn't that like a bankrobber saying that he wants to move on? Pods is so far out of the door it isn't even funny. Jerry Owens put up better numbers, and that is saying something.
  12. If Torii Hunter is an overrated loser, give me a team full of losers anyday.
  13. Don't look now, but the Dow is points away from a another closing high... I will be shocked if it closes there, but stranger things have happened.
  14. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 09:15 AM) This is universally true - they all have some spin answer instead of just straight up saying "I don't know, I'll research it and get back to you". Thompson just hasn't learned that he has to have some generic bulls*** answer for everything, even if he doesn't know a thing about it. He will though, give him time. Don't even waste your time...
  15. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 10:53 PM) I do. Especially if he wins the Peace Prize. Rumor is, if it happens, he drops the hammer on the campaign next month. And he'd crush Hillary. He doesn't even need the Noble. He would crush anything in the Democratic field today.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) I think the media is getting the script down for how to embarrass Fred Thompson. The instructions are: "1. Ask him a question. 2. Let him answer." Where would we be without our daily Fred Thompson update... He must really scare people because they are really after him right out of the gates.
  17. A former intellegence officer is saying that thousands have been killed, and that they are being dumped into the jungle. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...ticle_id=484903
  18. I don't know about Cy Young votes, but I would call Jenks the Sox MVP for 2007.
  19. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 09:18 AM) I find it amazing that a team with one of the worst records in baseball has a closer with 40 saves. Doesn't seem logical. Bobby Thigpen got his 57 saves on a really bad Sox team.
  20. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 11:08 PM) So you really want to spend $30+ mill a year on ARod? Really??? I don't know if it is the right thing to do or not, but keep in mind that Kenny Williams has tried 3 times to get Alex on the southside. He tried to sign him as a free agent. He tried to get him when the Yankees traded for him, and he spent a night at last years GM meetings trying to convince Cashman to trade him. We all know when Kenny wants someone, he goes after them, and he doesn't stop until he gets them.
  21. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 12:29 PM) Isn't it a very real possibility Wasserman is another Shingo, and gets lit up early and often next year? The guy has done a decent job, but when your delivery is really the biggest thing you bring to the table, you have to figure major league hitters will figure it out. I'm very worried KW is going with the attitude that all the players are going to bounce back and thinking all his young players will blossom next year. If thats the case, at least I won't have to have playoff money in by September. Ah, always looking for the rainclouds in a sunny sky... Personally I think Ehren will be a niche pitcher for the Sox. There is a place for these kind of guys because not many guys come from these angles. Its unnatural really. Plus if the Sox do indeed keep the core of fastball pitchers, it really presents a much different look and tilt out of the bullpen versus anyone else they are seeing. I like the idea of them keeping one of Haegar or Wasserman if they are going to go with a pen full of fastballs. It gives the hitters something else to think about, and gives them a different look.
  22. Lets hear all of the prognositcators do their predictions.... Which players on the Sox roster have played their last game in a White Sox uniform?
  23. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 07:55 PM) He disclosed it, and he followed the law. If people watched what was happening, they would have realized that Countrywide was a company that was in a little trouble. That stuff is all public knowledge. There are places to go to find out what specific insiders are doing with their stock. It is a required disclosure to the SEC under Sarbines Oxley.
  24. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) Sounds like once the government took control of the monasteries and the monks were no longer out in the streets igniting protest the citizenry quieted up. I am sure the whole sale slaughter of monks with automatic weapons kind of put a damper on the whole protesting idea too...
  25. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 08:07 PM) US sanctions tighten which will keep 30 members of the Burmese military junta from entering the US. The US is also going to freeze any assets for 14 members of the junta. Meanwhile, Japan has said it will review its aid programs after a Japanese journalist was shot dead during the demonstrations in Rangoon. Video footage of Kenji Nagai apparently being shot by a Burmese soldier was broadcast around the world on Friday. I've been reading the BBC with my students for the last few minutes of study hall via my LCD so they are hearing about this Burma issue. For those who didn't live it as it unfolded, the similarities to Tianamen Square are just amazing. The video footage of the Japanese reporting being shot at point blank range just makes your blood run cold. If you can stomach it, it is worth watching, just to etch the image of this crackdown into your mind. It is very similar to the man staring down the tank in China in 1987.
