1) I visited two designated World Heritage Sites in a single day in Queensland Australia – diving on the Great Barrier Reef in the morning and hiking in the Kuranda Mountain range in the afternoon. 2) I have been 2,400 feet deep in the ocean in a research submersible off of Jamaica.

It's like playing a lot of Dungeons and Dragons, except not quite as cool.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Feb 17, 2008 -> 04:53 PM) dinosaur? dude they are stealth fighter jets, not really a primitive technology. they are totally badass too. I'm not knocking the technology - it is the mindset that is outmoded. They are intended for air-to-air combat with a Cold War superpower that no longer exists. Our enemy now doesn't fly hundred-million dollar jet planes. they plant $25 roadside bombs and strap explosives to themselves. Rolling out more B-22s is an excellent way of tackling that problem, and highly cost effective too. With all the US soldiers dying because their body armor sucks and their vehicles aren't armor-plated, I for one think the $300 million a pop for B-22s could be better spent actually equipping our soldiers for fighting today's enemy, not the enemy of 20 years ago.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 17, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) Quite simply, that the cost of those U.N. Dues people make a big deal about is the equivalent of about 2 F-22's a year. At $300 million a pop, and having never flown a single combat sortie since their debut, I propose we stop building these dinosaur Cold War holdovers rather than renewing the contracts year in and year out.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 16, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) We already provide more "poverty assistance" then any other country on the planet, both through private and "public" means. But that's ok, it's another nanny project for the Democrats to use our money to help out everyone but who really needs it, I suppose. The private assistances from American foundations like Gates Foundation, I'm pretty sure, are supposed to inspire us as individuals and also as a nation to do more to alleviate international poverty, hunger, disease, and inequity. But that's ok, as long as someone else is doing the good deed for us America can continue to shrink from its agreed upon obligations to the UN, I suppose.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:07 PM) Can one of you Obamaites explain to me why this bill he is sponsoring would be a good thing for the US? http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publi...272618845.shtml This is one part that bugged me. Well, it would be good because it would recommit the US to providing the amount of world poverty reduction assistance (as a percentage of GDP) we agreed we would provide 35 years ago. It would also push us to ratify the CBD, Kyoto, small arms reduction, and a few other treaties we have not yet ratified, so there's another benefit. The US signed onto the UN's lofty goal of reducing by half the amount of world poverty by 2015. That's not going to happen if member nations don't step up and make it happen.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 12:44 PM) If they have a candidate to rally AGAINST (Hillary), they will. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 12:44 PM) I GUARANTEE you that if Hillary is the nominee, they will hold their nose and pull the McCain lever, because the "religious right" understands very clearly the ramifications of a Hillarity presidency. I agree that the anti-Clinton vote could be the one that mobilizes members of the religious right that would sit it out otherwise. That is a group that is very capable of grassroots mobilization to turn out enough voters to figure very prominently in th election if they get a fire lit under them.

QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) what i think is that in a general election, Hillary will be able to fight fire with fire. She'll fight like a muthaf*cka against McCain, and it will be seen as ok because she doesn't have this "nice guy" image she has to maintain like Obama does. Also, everybody already KNOWS the s*** about Clinton so nothing McCain pulls out will hurt her any MORE. With Obama, a lot of people still aren't AWARE of the skeletons in his closet and they'll be able to tear his pristine image to shreds. And they will. And will he be able to fight back while keeping his hopeful optimism? I dunno... The ability to fight fire with fire will not come close to offsetting the anti-Clinton vote that will mobilize on behalf of McCain if she gets the nomination. You say everybody already knows Bearing in mind that the Clinton s***, but it's not a question of what McCain could do with that. Keep in mind that 1/3 of the fractuous conservative base – the social conservatives and more specifically the Christian conservatives – are not too keen on the idea of a McCain presidency. The fact that this group turned out in droves to vote for GWB made the difference in the last two elections. If they sit 2008 out and the Dems turned out in the kind if numbers it appears they will, McCain loses by a lot in the general. But all of that potentially falls apart with a Clinton nomination, because the Clinton Penis will again become something the conservative Christians can turn out to vote against if the GOP media machine finds a way to pretend it is an issue.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 15, 2008 -> 10:54 AM) Since Super Tuesday he has gotten more superdelegates then her and a couple of hers have already switched over to him. I'm having trouble understanding why that trend would all of a sudden reverse after he wins Wisconsin, Hawaii and possibly Texas. It's not that a trend would reverse. The concern is that it is the Washington establishment-types that make up the big bulk of superdelegates, making them potential kingmakers in the kind of smokey backroom deal that would give fellow establishment-type Clinton the nomination despite Obama's winning the popular vote and the regular delegates. An Obama win in Texas might be enough to prevent this ugly situation from happening.

I had a serious backslide this week and GAINED 2 lbs (Back to 191 lbs). I had to make an unplanned trip back to Chicago for a family funeral and I sort of overdid it on all the city comfort food. Two nights of pizza, a post-funeral brunch, a few beers I can't get in Florida, a hotdog here and there, and a big Valentine's dinner when i got back home last night all took their toll. I'd be voted off the show this week for sure. Carrots and an apple for lunch today and 20 miles on the stationary this weekend!!

Does anyone here have any family members by-marriage who are just such a great fit and so wonderful that they become as close or closer to you than your blood relations? That was my "Uncle" Joe. Not really an uncle, but married to a first cousin. Unbelievably great guy, generous beyond measure, and lifelong diehard Sox fan to boot. He was diagnosed with lymphoma a couple of years back, and it progressed unbelievably rapidly and just ate him up. He died yesterday, way before he should have, leaving a wife, children, and new grandchildren way too soon. You will be missed by many, Uncle Joe. :crying
