Palestinians and the American Indian
Rex Kickass replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
Physical charateristics. There is a palestinian culture - partially derived from Bedouinism, which as become a part of the Palenstinians. I won't pretend to know much about it. But I do remember that I went to grad school with a palestinian woman who made amazing Baba Ghannouge. -

Palestinians aren't Arab, although they speak Arabic - it is a distinct nationality. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) So in other words, you also oppose the 2 Republican Senate primary challengers who are going after Chaffee and Akaka from the political right of both of those Senators (both of which btw are much more serious challenges than the one facing Lieberman, but the media doesn't bother reporting on those) Lieberman might very well lose, actually.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) You're missing my point. They are completely ineffective at helping anyone under the control of terrorists. However, they do have a voice ( a rather annoying one at that ) on our side of things thanks to leftists who believe anything short of a massage and a full facial for terrorists and criminals is "torture". Of course, how could I forget the Amnesty International "Mani/Pedi for America Haters" promotion back in 2005. In fact, I think the Red Cross probably sold some of the blood for the finger sandwiches they served (all the ham salad was strictly Halal, I believe).

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:49 PM) That "unregulated militia" also just so happens to have a significant foothold in the Lebanese government so maybe they're not quite so "unregulated" after all. Oh, you're right. And it's been the biggest issue in Lebanon since the Syrians were thrown out last year. About whether or not Hezbollah should be able to have a militant wing. But this new democracy - like most - is fragile and change like that has to happen slowly. A wedge was being driven between a militant hezbollah and the rest of Lebanon. But destroying an entire country based on some rocket attacks by a militant group based in Lebanon isn't exactly going to help Lebanon rid itself of Hezbollah, and its going to do nothing but strengthen Hezbollah.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:47 PM) How about reporting it accurately. I did start off asking why they haven't said anything, because up to now, THEY HAVEN'T. Or if they have, it sure didn't get as much play as their frequent and multiple condemnations of Israel. Then you, with way to much time on your hands, google searched to find an article that says they did. I applauded such words coming from them, as they have been a long time coming. That is not a 'who cares' attitude, it is a 'lets see where that goes, if anywhere' comment. Because truely, talk is cheap. That's not raising the bar because my 'point was destroyed'. Get off your high horse, get a life, and get it straight. Seriously, you're really off base here EM. She didn't google search it. It's on the front page of the Amnesty International website. It was released less than 24 hours after the escalation between Israel and Hezbollah started. And their call to end civilian casualty is about as much as our own government has done to quell the situation. As of 7/14, Tony Snow as much as admitted that the US Government hadn't even had any serious contact with Israel regarding the situation. This is the second time in as many months that someone has said "look what AI hasn't said a word about." And then I go to the front page of the AI website and there's an official position and call to action on their website. I don't really know what you would expect AI to do in a situation like this. What, go visit the kidnapped? If we knew where they were, Israel would have them home already. That was kind of the point to begin with. I know we live in an era of poor leadership, but if even you are looking to organizations like Amnesty International for leadership for Stability and Peace in the Middle-East, instead of our government, that's really really sad.

He's been preaching it for three years - and Lakoff is desperate to become the Democrats' answer to Luntz.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) Exactally. One place in the whole country has French as its official language, while the rest of the country has to deal with dual languages. What a boondoggle that must be for any governmental branch. " English and French are the official languages of all federal government institutions in Canada. This means that the public has the right to communicate with, and receive services from, federal government institutions in either English or French and that federal government employees have the right to work in the official language of their choice in designated bilingual regions" Can you imagine the havok that would cause in lost productivity (as if government is productive as it is!) if Joe Citizen could demand that court proceeding be done in Spanish instead of English? Or that drivers license tests be done in Farsi? Actually, French is a national language in Canada. It just happens that a majority of French speakers live in Quebec. There is French TV in Toronto, for example - and CBC broadcasts in French on the air, across the country. Joe Citizen can indeed demand that court proceedings be done in Spanish - and they frequently are through the use of court-appointed translators. Because the American legal system deems it important that people facing justice are aware of the proceedings around him. Or is that just more America hating on the part of those activist judges again?

Lakoff is really interesting. I enjoyed Don't Think of An Elephant and am looking forward to reading this particular book too, but I think he's a little too centered on framing as the root of our problems. Part of the root of our problems is prior to this year, the Democratic Party leadership has been very unresponsive to the rank and file. With the election of Howard Dean, this is starting to change. Doing things like rebuilding the party in Montana and Nebraska, and in the South is going to go a much further way to make change than framing words.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:04 PM) Can we please get an official language for this country? Why? Feel like emulating the French?

And if his consituency defeats him in the primary? Why should he run again? A lot of states have sore loser laws to prevent things like this from actually happening, by the way. Joe Lieberman isn't getting challenged for where he stands on the Iraq war. Joe Lieberman is getting challenged because a lot of Democrats in Connecticut are sick and tired of Joe Lieberman. Lamont is a sensible guy, by no means a wing nut on either side. And he managed to get 35% of the state convention votes. Arlen Specter found himself in a tough primary fight because the Republican leadership found him distasteful - but you didn't see cries from the Dems about how the GOP cannibalizes their own. And you didn't see Arlen Specter say "I'm going to run as an Independent if I lose the primary because the party clearly doesn't want me here." Chuck Schumer has gone out of his way to endorse Lieberman in the primary, by the way. Last time I checked he's the head of the DSCC. You have all of one Senator out of 44 who has supported someone other than Lieberman in the primary. You have sitting senators in the Dem leadership actively campaigning for Lieberman in the primary. That's clearly NOT the party kicking Lieberman out. So when you blame the party for kicking someone out, you're blaming the people of his party who decides that he doesn't represent them anymore. Not the leadership that so many of you can't seem to stop maligning. If he doesn't respect his people's decision in the first place, he should just stop being so indecisive about it and jump ship already. And if he can't win the nomination of the people in his own party, he probably won't win in Connecticut in the general either. Oh, and if you don't think the party stands behind Nelson - why don't you look and see what the DNC is helping to do with the party in his home state.

QUOTE(samclemens @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 10:48 AM) again, do you have a better solution? what should we be doing? what should israel be doing instead? i'll pre-empt your suggestion that we bring in jimmy carter for more peace talks. for god's sake, they dont work, so please dont suggest that. please see my post above about the arab countries involved in this conflict getting what they deserve and the reasons for it. in a nutshell, they shouldnt have dished it out to israel if they cant take it from israel. A good solution would be to fight a non-state entity as a non-state entity and not as a state. Israel is destroying one of the most liberal states in the mid-east and a nascent democracy and basically acheiving nothing because Hezbollah fights guerilla warfare and doesn't have big camps and headquarters. They are attacking an unregulated militia by destroying neighborhoods in suburban Beirut. They are attacking an unregulated militia by destroying the transportation infrastructure in Lebanon. They are attacking an unregulated militia by literally destroying the Lebanese government. And sadly it won't end soon - even though nothing but pain will come of this. Because neither hezbollah or the state of Israel is willing to have peace yet. Israel because its acting out of anger and political necessity, Hezbollah because it has nothing to lose. Whod'a thought that we'd be wishing for the restraint of Ariel Sharon.

Not until 20 years after their last sexual contact. However, female prostitutes only have to wait six months.

You asked for an example, I gave you one. Want another? Fine. Ben Nelson (Nebraska) He wants goals set. He doesn't want a deadline for troop removal. His Iraq voting record is identical to Lieberman's in 06.

Isn't it though? I'm actually not allowed to give blood.

That's right, eff them. I'm not giving blood anymore!

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 05:27 PM) I don't think the DCCC should have used the image in their ads, but the Contrast here is beautiful. And, barely 2 days later... Seriously, both sides, do we need this s*** in ads? And Republicans, would you like to practice what you preach here just a little bit? The Democrats in response to the criticism pulled their ads. The Republicans - won't most likely. Which is why they win. They do the thing that wins, not the nice thing or even the right thing.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,203710,00.html Seeing this article made this thread worth a bump. Seems even Bill Clinton is opposed to a fixed timeline to withdrawing from Iraq. Which means sadly, that the only substantive Iraq debate is going on in the Democratic Party, and not actually within the government itself.
