  1. George Soros and Barbara Streisand does not constitute the "left wing of the party." And what does it matter? The "Soros/Streisand" department of the Democratic Party doesn't even live in CT, so what they fund doesn't matter. The people who throw Lieberman under the bus have to actually vote for Lamont. Those people live in CT - and moderates are breaking for Lamont, not Lieberman. Lamont is no left-winger by any means.
  2. You just said that's exactly what it was. He's an unresponsive Senator who won't fight for issues that Connecticut democrats care about. They have every right to toss him out on his keister. And if Ned Lamont just wants to be a good Senator, and not another Presidential wannabe - more power to him.
  3. This is news, how? It's a guerilla war movement that Hezbollah fights. Of course they have some support of the people in Lebanon. Especially the Shia who live in Southern Lebanon. And frankly if the bombs were falling on my house from Israel, I'd probably side with the people fighting back myself. Six weeks ago, Israel had a chance to affect change by attacking Hezbollah politically and helping the Christians and Druze who wanted a disarmed Hezbollah. They didn't do that, did they? Southsider: to answer your comment, of course Hezbollah hasn't done that. And they wouldn't. Their stated goal is the destruction of Israel. That's unacceptable. However, Israel's stated goal wasn't bombing shelters of women and children either. It was stopping Hezbollah and making tactical mistakes like that doesn't stop Hezbollah. Even if some families are letting the militias fire from a backyard.
  4. Whoopdeespiff. If Soros and Streisand contributed, good for them. It's nice to see private citizens taking an interest in public affairs. On the whole, Lamont's campaign is more small money than big - and Lieberman's campaign is more out of state money than in state money.
  5. Like Hillary!? She's pro-Iraq war. There are other pro-Iraq war democrats out there who enjoy the support of their party. I love how that's the "only" reason. It really really isn't.
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 08:07 AM) Either that or we need a line item veto to be passed... If we did that, they'd keep the estate tax cut and lose minimum wage increases.
  7. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) I agree that the Republicans have moved to the right, but disagree that the Dems are not moving towards the left. Howard Dean's representation of the party certainly suggests that it is. The financial backing of Ned Lamont by Soros and Streisand, in an attempt to overthrow a former Dem VP candidate because he supports the Iraq War, is further evidence. Over half of Lamont's money raised came from Connecticut. Only 20% of Lieberman's did. The "Soros/Streisand" argument holds no water. QUOTE(minors @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 02:03 AM) Found 1 case good for you. Wasn't hard to find. It was the case you brought up.
  8. Prediction: If Lieberman loses the primary, he bows out within a week of his loss. From all accounts I've read, he's run a horrible campaign and isolated himself from his own party within his state. A lot of the negative Joementum has been his own fault this year. And this primary will be very close.

QUOTE(Be Good @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 08:57 AM) Goin on a cruise From San Juan to Aruba, Barbados, Dominica, Saint Thomas, Aug 13-20 on Carnival Destiny. Then going to Paramounts Kings Dominion Aug 21-24, and Lake George Aug 25-28 And you didn't call me to get a good deal on your cruise? For shame!
  10. I won't be so naive as to say I doubt its true - but it very well could be a false positive. If Landis was a user of testosterone it would make sense that the 16 tests he took prior to stage 17 would also have been positive. Pr show elevated levels at least. From the information showing, you don't see that. He's also on a lot of medication for the hip he's getting replaced in the fall.... But this is another sport where I think, although doping isn't dangerous, I don't think its any worse that any of the other medical training regimens that cyclists go through in preparation from the Tour De France. Testosterone might give someone a little jump in a stage, but to say its responsible for an 8 minute jump in the overall standings three weeks into the tour is giving the drug a lot more credit than the athletes who maintain similar paces the whole time.

I am in Rio de Janeiro right now. Yay for the vacay!
  12. Today, I woke up in my hostel and went with my new friends Maria and Matthew to the Copacabana beach where we sat all day and drank Caparinhas til we were three sheets to the wind. Then we almost went up Mount Sugarloaf, but decided to wait for a better sunset.

  14. QUOTE(samclemens @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) i dont see how making feeding the homeless in parks helps the city, its residents, or the homeless. I don't know, I tend to see value in people eating food once in a while.
  15. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 02:26 PM) Um, no I haven't. The fact remains that the current Lebanese regime is throwing away its chance to condemn Hezbollah and actually embrace the concept of democracy. Maybe you missed the point of democracy and Islamic terrorism being incompatible. You keep using a 2000 benchmark that didn't exist for the current government because they didn't exist. Now, as for this denouncing Hizbollah. Maybe it isn't so simple. From what little I know about Lebanese politics, which is next to nothing - this very thing is something that was a source of tension and debate in Lebanon since the democratic election in 2005. The problem is, denounce Hizbollah and aim the armed wing at you for a power play in a fragile state - or try to work in a peaceful matter to get Hizbollah to disarm itself and work to heal divisions between three very distinct sectarian communities coexisting. It was and has been a balancing act - and when you have all of three months of tradition to back yourself up with, you can't totally upset the apple cart without sending the entire country into chaos. I won't disagree that Lebanon had, thusfar, failed to disarm Hizbollah - but not for a lack of trying.
  16. Given a lack of urgency, and sudden lack of attention to the issue, 10,000 people is impressive.
  17. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 11:16 AM) Didn't the UN mandate that Hezbollah disarm after Israel pulled out six years ago? Great job of enforcing that, guys. Sadly, that's typical of the UN these days. Did you see Lebanon's PM on Larry King last night? According to him, Hezbollah is merely a "resistance group", while the Israelis are "occupiers." That was a great opportunity for him to call out both sides and ask the international community to pressure both sides for peace (and possibly ridding his country of Hezbollah). Instead, he chose to blame Israel, despite the fact that his own country is harboring a terrorist army. Israel spent 18 years occupying Southern Lebanon. There's a bit of history there. BTW: You keep insinuating that there is continuity between the Lebanese government of 2000 and the Lebanese government of 2006. Maybe you missed the Cedar Revolution last year that up until last week was held up as a sign of progress in our goal to "spread democracy" across the region. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 11:47 AM) International Forces have worked so well previously in other parts of the world. They did quite well in Bosnia, thanks.
  18. Does this deficit number have the supplemental bills involved in it by the way?
  19. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 06:41 PM) So, it's Israel's responsibility to keep terrorists out of neighboring nations? No more so than it is a government's responsibility to disarm an unregulated militia five years before being elected.
  20. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 05:32 PM) Not really. Look at the title. I wish I could find that video of the dude sending shout outs when leaving his board. We wouldnt notice if he was gone, so he had to tell us he was leaving. Replace him with you, and you'd be right. Ribbie's been here forever.
  21. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 05:23 PM) Someone makes a whole goodbye thread crying about how he can't bear to see another negative post -- and it's everyone else that's "that damn emotional"? Lol. A lot of people have been on this site and helped to make it successful, Ribbie was one of them. And he makes a great point. I hardly look in the main soxtalk board anymore myself. Because I can't seem to find much worth talking about or reading without having to sort through hundreds of posts about how much someone hates Chris Widger or Jay Mariotti or Freddy Garcia.
  22. Well, did Israel make that offer before or after they started bombing the spiff out of Beirut?
  23. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 05:18 PM) The puking smile has also been removed. That one was all on me, was sick of wiping that off my shirt every day.
