I think Bush calling McCain and Obama in on this is actually a really good move on his part.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 08:03 PM) This is one instance where I say flat out f*** the polls. Sometimes there are more important things. I don't think people grasp fully what a collapse of the financial sector would mean for their lives. They do need to fix this. I don't know if the bailout is the right answer, but I have yet to see anyone come up with something better. Chuck Schumer proposed breaking it up into $150 billion bites that would be administered by an oversight board, and additional funds would only be injected as needed. That sounds better to me.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 04:59 PM) Rep. Barney Frank told a group of reporters outside the House chamber: "It's the longest Hail Mary pass in the history of either football or Marys." Barney Frank.... Barney Frank.... Barney Frank.... You're funny, but you're a b****.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 05:14 PM) Please HOLD IT UP LONGER. Rumor is that the Republican congressional caucus has a total of four supporters for Paulson's plan.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 04:09 PM) I disagree, I think this may save McCain. The Republican's had jumped the shark with their rhetoric this campaign, they were trying to beat Obama at his own game the "change" card. It started to become ridiculous comparisons of "who is the bigger reformer", "who brings more change", and at the end of the day its just strange that they thought it was a good idea to run on that idea. Now they can change tactics drastically and not lose any face. McCain will "stop campaigning" while the campaign changes directions. McCain will run on the fact that he just wants to do whats best for America, that he is and has always been willing to sacrifice for America. Here are a bunch of statements if I was McCain Id use against Obama now: "Look at what I did when I was running for President, I put aside my chances to win, so that I could solve the crises, I gave up my dream, so that the rest of America could be saved. If I lost my chance to be elected President because I cared to much about America, I can live with that. I can live with looking into American's eyes and saying I did the right thing, as opposed to I did what was best for me. Because thats what I believe America is about, its about selflessness, its about the good of everyone. And today I did what was best for America, because some times doing the right thing means you have to sacrifice." Strategy wise, I think its pretty good it could backfire but I believe right now McCain felt that things hadnt been going his way recently, so desperate times call for desperate measures. I think that is specifically the idea. And it can work extremely well.

It is a tough road. I think the best compromise for him is to agree to a two day delay and he's on his way to Washington right now to work on a compromise. But that doesn't mean a campaign suspension is in order. Going to Washington? Leadership. Suspending the Campaign? Political.

Obama is currently saying No to delaying debates.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 02:39 PM) Postponing the debate a couple days, so that Obama and McCain can be... ya know... SENATORS... is a good idea. Suspending the campaign seems a little much. Like, trying to make a big thing of it for publicity. If it was really just wanting to fix things, they'd issue a joint statement, postpone the debate to Sunday evening, and then move on. Honestly? This is a pander. Obama calls McCain to issue a joint statement. McCain then one-ups and says "I'm SUSPENDING!" This is as big of a campaign ploy as anything we've ever seen. It's being nasty by being clean. If you need to go to Washington, go to Washington. But that doesn't mean that you should stop your campaign. Maybe you should bring your campaign to the actual issue instead.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) I agree, it would be refreshing if they are working together on this. Question is, does that mean we actually have two decent choices this time, or is it a sign of just how dire the economy is? We have better choices this year. I think we have one good choice and one not as good choice, but still much better than the GOP's recent nominees. I'm just not buying this crisis as a crisis. CNN: Obama called McCain at 8:30 AM to talk about issuing a joint statement.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
Rex Kickass replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 11:19 AM) Palin is a straight talker. (I know, that's a bad pun from the "Straight Talk Express"... but read me out). What I mean by that is, and I think Rex said it best in another thread, she gives a POLI 101 answer to a POLI 401 question, she talks plainly and simple. She doesn't give the "political bulls*** answer" that you'd hear from any of the other three. What does that mean? Most Americans, it's nothing - as a matter of fact, might even be somewhat refreshing. Our darling media? It means they will lamblast every freaking answer she has on anything until the cows come home, because she's not "sophisticated". Is that good or bad? It's both, frankly. If I'm a professor, I want the answer to the poli 401 question at the poli 401 level. If I'm a voter, I want a candidate who can answer above a poli sci 101 level too. It's not about sophistication or bulls***, its about knowing and understanding the actual issues. It's pretty clear that she doesn't. And that is an unmitigated bad thing. -
Obama and McCain will release a joint statement about this. If they are actually working together, during the course of a heated campaign, this says mountains about the choices we have this year. Do you think we would have heard about this in 2004? Or 2000? Or any election in recent memory?
-
I think its a smart move on behalf of McCain, but it does reek of desperation. If I was Obama, I would agree to postponing the debate to Sunday night or so, and return to Washington to work on this for a couple days. I wouldn't suspend the campaign. But I would suspend his appearances.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) I converse with my bamboo plant every day. Based on its incoherent responses I am led to believe it has no brain. That's just because Bamboo is an asian plant. They don't speak English.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 10:21 AM) I'd think the Dems would have noticed that Uribe has been looking a lot better at 3rd this year. But I wouldn't speak with him either til he gets rid of that goofy facial hair.

Not unless Republicans are on board en masse. Pelosi says unless she has broad bipartisan support, it won't even come up for a vote. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/pelosi...2008-09-23.html

The Tuesday night, I'm sick of translating French, shuffle. 1. Bob Dylan - The Man In Me 2. Bjork - Heaven (Mannel Remix) 3. Jens Lekman - Black Cab. This dude is Sweden's answer to Jonathan Richman, I swear. 4. Soul Coughing - Soft Serve 5. The Go! Team - Titanic Vandalism 6. Bettie Serveert - Cut N Dried 7. Sugarcubes - Dear Plastic. 8. Junior Senior - Simple Minds Do Simple Things Part 2. This is on the bonus EP to 2005's Hey Hey My My Yo Yo which was only released in the US at the end of 07. This stuff is so much different sounding, and not as good as anything else that they've done. 9. Fiona Apple - Shadowboxer 10. Amy Winehouse - Amy Amy Amy (Outro)

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 11:43 AM) No, his point is if he's an ARAB-American, then why would he get all the AFRICAN-American vote? He's not "black" - (please forgive my tone, I'm just trying to articulate what he was trying to point out, IMO). It's not about hate, as much as some want it to be. The point that Limbaugh seems to think this actually matters might make some think that its more about hate than many others want it to be.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) Anyone actually hear Rush say this? If it is true, and I say if, they miss one important aspect of the race experience in America, is does not matter what you are legally, it only matters what you look like. That is what will cause reactions, whether it is discrimination in housing, employment, services rendered, etc. Sad that Rush would be trying to find some loophole in how Obama describes himself. Obama could claim to be Dutch, but he'd still be treated like an African-American. They have the audio at the link.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 11:02 AM) Of course it is. Its also a BS arguement that somehow Bidens' gaffe's get more attention than anything Palin does. I never said that. Let me clarify what I've said. Biden is a known quantity. Him putting his foot in his mouth is relatively normal. Oh and the Obama campaign doesn't even try to make the campaign about Biden. Palin is new, unknown and she has become the bigger name and face to the McCain campaign than McCain has been. Biden takes a backseat in Obama's campaign, Palin does not take the same backseat. If McCain wants Palin to be less of an issue in the campaign, maybe he should take steps to be the bigger of the two figures on his ticket.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 10:51 AM) As long as the media outlets aren't crossing the Obama campaign anyway... That is such a bulls*** argument.

5th Grader Suspended for Anti-Obama Shirt
Rex Kickass replied to Steve9347's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 10:35 AM) tinker v. ohio, wasn't that where the girl wore the black armband protesting the Vietnam war. and so then the school kicked her out, Supreme Court ruled in favor of her. But perhaps, black is less disruptive, than say, an anti obama ribbon if it has writing on it. Not sure what the deal is here. I think the court would argue that a black armband is considerably less incendiary than a homemade t-shirt claiming someone is a "terrorist's best friend." -
Votes are done by state delegations, not by individual preference. It is highly unlikely that the election would result in two states flipping to Republican majority in office given where many Senate and House members are now.
