  1. QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) Your really not going to get alot in return for Shingo.. Who also has been brutal this year.. Plus Cruz is still a young player True, but I'd rather take my chances with Shingo than Cruz. Btw: Cruz: 21 IP 8.49 era 2.09 WHIP Shingo 28 IP 5.14 era 1.54 WHIP I'll take Shingo thank you.
  2. Cruz has been god awful this yr, no way would I want to be stuck with him.
  3. Is this a fact or are you just speculating?
  4. I think that's a done deal, the talk about the Sox as still in the running was IMO nothing but a bluff by FLA to get Cabrera in the deal. If/when the Sox make their deal, FLA loses any leverage they'd have at getting Lowell or Encarnacion added which would be a huge snafu on their part. They can't afford to risk that, this will be done by Monday.
  5. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 02:24 PM) With KW no doubt in contact with other GM's about possible trades, he now knows what teams want and need from the sox. Trading Shingo and then getting a better reliever is certainly doable in an atmosphere like this. Viz has done much better as of late. Keeping either Shingo or Viz comes down to different factors though: how it would affect team chemistry [hasn't Shingo been quiet/ keeps to himself?], who would throw better vs possible playoff opponents and specific players, who can throw more than an inning as a bridge reliever, etc. Sure it's doable, but you don't pull the trigger unless the other deal is done at the same time. That was my point, and at this point I don't think the other deal is in place. That's why I think this rumor is just that, a rumor. I didn't like the Viz pickup to begin with and he's given me no reason to change my mind. Maybe that's bias on my part but so be it.
  6. Personally I think this is a bunch of crap, you're not going to trade him unless it's part of a three-way for another reliever and Seattle has already said they're going to wait til the deadline to decide on Guardado and Philly seems in no rush to trade now either. The dumbest thing you can do is trade the guy for a prospect thinking you can turn that around later. Those are the teams who are always left holding the bag. That said, I've always considered that Shingo might be part of a Guardado trade but my preference would be to send Viz instead. Shingo at least can be a righty specialist, Viz IMO brings nothing to the table for us at this point.
  7. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 10:14 AM) I know everyone has this "Let's put all of our eggs into one basket" and go for it this season, but the Sox still need to look at their long - term interests. If a guy like Santos is acquired, it gives them some wiggle room to possibly move Uribe in a future deal if he doesn't increase his production. Sure Shingo has been pretty good lately, but he's replaceable, and he's not an important part of the bullpen and is hardly used in any important situations anymore with Politte, Cotts and Marte all ahead of him. Baj has 1.11 ERA down at Charlotte in an extreme hitters park. He deserves a shot. Period. The Sox have had 3 opportunities to bring Baj up and refused to do it, they're not going to trade someone now just to give him the opportunity.
  8. I have been against getting Lilly since the rumors started but in going over what we need for the playoffs it comes down to 2 things. Someone who owns David Ortiz and someone who can beat the A's, those are our biggest obstacles to the WS and the biggest things we're lacking. Surprisingly(for me at least), the guy who absolutely owns Ortiz is none other than Ted Lilly, and in fact he's done very well vs the BoSox in general. He tradionally hasn't done too well vs the A's but then this yr he is 1-1 with a 2.71 era against them and that's what counts most. Another guy who could claim to own Ortiz is Mark Redman but he's been awful vs the entire BoSox is just plain bad vs possible playoff opponents in general.
  9. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 09:17 PM) Lowell was very average the second half of last season, and brutal the first half of this. Up until then, he's an All Star. He only made 7 errors last year, but I heard his range isn't the greatest. He definitely would be a downgrade defensively from Crede. Offensively, he could be anything from a huge upgrade to actually a downgrade. If that's the deal, and really who knows, its a good thing that Ozzie knows Mike Lowell very well. What is the cause of the drop off? Did he use the same vitamins the Giambi boys and Corky were using? How true Dick, any hitter who's #'s have nosed dived this yr has to be suspect esp. when he's packing a 'roid packed contract. For fans of a team with Buehrle as its ace and also in the same town as Kerry Wood I'm dumbfounded by this love affair with Burnett around here. Flat out, the guy doesn't win no matter what his "stuff" is and one would think that Buehrle fans would recognize that. IMO, Schmidt is going nowhere. SF was hoping for a reverse Sidney Ponson type deal and since no one is biting they're content to stay as they are. It's not like they're cash strapped or that his contract next yr is excessive. They have no reason to make a losing or even break-even deal, any interest on their part is to rape and pillage and quite frankly Schmidt doesn't bring enough to this team to warrant that. The A's will end up winning the WC and it's the run that they're on now(that'll last past the deadline) that'll get them there. Beane has no reason to sell off Zito right now and as we're seeing his actually going into buying mode instead.
  10. I don't believe they sell SRO tickets so there's no point in waiting, go to stubhub.com or something similar.
  11. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 03:04 PM) Conversely, I think Crede is drastically underrated on this message board. There are definitely two camps around here when it comes to Crede, though some seems to be a reaction to all the Crede hate that has flowed.
  12. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 03:00 PM) It was the MLBPA that put the screws to the ARod to Boston deal, not the commish. True, in the end it was the MLBPA but IIRC one of the hangups early was that Texas wanted Boston to pay a big chunk of Manny's contract and they had to get the commish's approval to do that. I believe that's what led Boston to try to get ARod to adjust his contract which then brought the MLBPA into the scene. That all seems so long ago now.
  13. Wouldn't surprise me if he was Yas, wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't. What does surprise me is he was selected to the AS game.
  14. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 06:54 AM) Let's drop the "Trade Konerko" talk please. As soon as Paulie heats up and starts bashing the ball in clutch situations, which he will, everyone will be cheering for him again. The whole offensive team scked this Oakland series. Frank came through with a big situational hit (SF in the 6th) but no one else could do anything. Well Kong will have to be able to hit a breaking ball before he can heat up because until further notice that's all they're going to throw him. Also, and this isn't just Kong but damm near the whole team, I'm getting REALLY tired of watching these guys swing at pitches on their fists while taking pitches right down the middle.
  15. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) Didnt the yanks send us 2 million for Contreras's contract? Or is that different since they are paying for part of his contract rather than giving money. They sent the $3 mil that remained of Joses' signing bonus, we still have to pay his $7 mil this yr and $8 mil next yr. That $1 mil limit may be more by now and the commish can always approve a bigger amount but he's been hesitant to do so(that was one of the reasons the ARod to Boston deal fell thru). Now things got weird with the Sosa deal which makes me unsure but I believe they were able to send all that money because it involved a trade clause bonus and not just straight salary.
  16. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 03:08 AM) f*** the A's. I'm so f***ing tired of them. Every single one of thos f***ers. Down to the goddamn clubhouse manager. Thank God we won't see these assholes in the playoffs. It would be brutal. I wouldn't be to quick to write these guys off just yet, they've always been a 2nd half team and they're only 4.5 games back of the slumping Twinks. If the A's end up as the WC then they'd most likely be our 1st round opponent, at that point we're f_cked.
  17. QUOTE(Southside hitmen @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) If the Sox are giving about 4M dollars plus prospects so this trade can go through. I think we are going to get alot more back than just Zach Day IIRC you can only send $1 mil in cash with a player unless it's the balance of a signing bonus which then you are obligated to send.
  18. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 02:55 PM) Beck, You can't be serious? You don't try to pull that play on Derek Lee earlier this year if you don't have passion. Did you see that pick off play the other day against TB? Uribe cares. He has passion. He didn't gain as much weight that people tend to believe. I seen him at soxfest, he looked a little heavier, but thats what camp is for, to get back in shape. Frank has never come in overweight? Uribe is the only player to come in overweght? Uribe is hitting the following against these possible playoff pitchers : Johan santana .267 Randy Johnson .273 kenny Rogers .300 Mike Mussina .429 Curt Schilling .238 Matt Clement .333 These pitchers pretty much hold the opposition to under a .250 BA. He's Not exactly an easy out. Maybe it's just me. Johan santana .235 Randy Johnson .263 Curt Schilling .111 Kenny Rogers .271 Mike Mussina .260 no at bats vs clement What about A.J.? who is batting .247 What about Gooch who Batted .244 In June and .250 In july so far. Uribe is hitting .333 in July so far. Like I said he is up and down. Dye is just as streaky as uribe. No one is calling for Dye's head because he is hot right now. Dye hit .175 in april and can very well do it again in October. Last year Uribe hit .289 in August and .353 in September. Uribe will be a strong finisher. Vizquel is hitting .219 the last 3 years in september. Guess what? he is another year older. Uribe doesn't bunt? move runners over? hit sacrafice flys? Why uribe out and not crede? I bet most people would rather have uribe at bat in a game tying/winning situation over crede. I dont know how much passion and energy he can possibly have for a team he didn't even want to sign with a 1/2 year ago. Funny how it goes, you talk up a guys passion and energy and then hours later he goes out and lays an egg and gets yanked for his lack of energy and desire. Some of the youngin's around here would say you just got pwned but since I don't know what that means I'll just go with the "Teaching moment".
  19. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 03:13 PM) I bet that Crede WILL be here next year. He is still cheap and won't be a free agent for another season. Make that another 3 seasons.
  20. QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 02:12 PM) Thanks. I just looked at Day's stats. Exactly why would we want him? As part of a package for something else?
  21. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 02:03 PM) You dont trade a young ss when is stock is low. Uribe brings to the table what #'s don't show. Passion and energy that rubs off on everyone around him. I swear, I see uribe having the most fun out there. I would rather have him right now then vizquel. Uribe wants to be on this team. I can't say the same for vizquel. You really think Uribe's bat is hurting us? One good month for Uribe will put him close to .300. We still have an entire half of baseball to go. Dye was hitting .216 and is now over .270. Rowand was stuggling too. We still have close to 80 games left. I am willing to bet Uribe will have a stronger 2nd half then Omar Vizquel. I see old players have good 1st halves all the time, then they just fizzle down the stretch because 162 games is a lot. We should have stuck with rowand at cf in 2003 and we should stick with Uribe in 2005. Normally yes you don't trade low but we're trying to get to a WS so you sometimes have to do what's best at the moment. Uribe's hitting around his career avg right now, the fluke definitely appears to be last yr. I'm in no rush to trade him though but if you want upgrade a bat in the lineup and you are looking at what's available out there then he's the most logical choice.
  22. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) I'd be weary of letting Harris go as he still could be good insurance in case Tad gets hurt this year. So would I Beck, but either he or Timo is going anyhow and if you can package one up in a trade you're probably better off. There will be ute IFers out there after the deadline too.
  23. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:09 PM) you look down on him for dating a bunny? LOL, I look UP to him for dating a bunny! Besides, Playboy aint bad, there are much worse skin mags to have your name associated with For that comment Hammerhead's daughter will make the DVD cover of Girls Gone Wild XV...........
  24. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:07 PM) I'll put forth my opinions. 1] I think the Sox need another bat like Vizquel in order to go deep into the playoffs [that Ozzie just said another bat might be needed could be a sign--a bat off the bench wouldn't make that much of a difference. But SS is just about the only spot to get an everyday player in.] Think of what would happen if Pods or Iguchi went down. Vizquel fits that mold perfectly. With Ozuna a good backup for SS, he could give Vizquel time off. Also, Robert Valido seems 2 years away from helping out the sox. Uribe would be missed. But he doesn't seem the player he was in 2004 for whatever reason. And not the type of hitter a team can count on to produce in the playoffs, hitting against the best pitching in baseball. Omar would be fine for the next 2 yrs, and prob. the 3rd as well, for not much more than it would cost for Uribe. 2] A bullpen arm might be needed to sweeten the deal, to placate fans. Baj might be too high but another decent arm could help [look at Gary Majewski's success in the everett deal---even though he seemed like a AAAA guy] 3] SF could use help at SS and 2B. They have Durham for another yr at 2B. But no real prospects at either spot in AA or AAA. A guy with Uribe's defense and pop to his bat could be valuable somewhere, esp. for an old team that needs to get young Uribe, Harris, and a Munoz/Stewart/Adkins type for Vizquel and Scott Erye? SF gets a young DP combo and we get the bat upgrade plus the lefty for the pen we need.
  25. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) Not making any changes for chemistry sake is what Pat Gillick and the 2001 Seattle Mariners did. They tore threw the regular season with no equal. Then in the playoffs they were dispatched with barely a whimper in the ALCS. Overconfidence in a BP that was overrated and thus not added to was their downfall. Their starters did ok vs the Yanks, their closer had an era of 54.00.
