  1. Jerry's favorite pastime is trolling the fanbases of his teams. He has a great deal of contempt for the fans.

This was my stance but after hearing more about what happened via several different reports, it's clear to me that he was indeed called in by his doctors unexpectedly.  I was talking to my FIL a couple weeks back, who also has a pacemaker....apparently those things are constantly reporting stats which are somehow or another linked to a monitoring service.  My FIL had, in fact, been called in to get checked out due to some things his pacemaker saw going on with his heart.  Same thing could have happened with TLR and would explain the abrupt exit just prior to that evening's game.

Regardless, this is the most tone deaf, incompetent franchise in professional sports.  The Sox were the laughingstock of the league. DIE HARD fans, like we find on this board, were outraged and pretty much quit watching games, much less attending them.  The casual fanbase was MIA.  Social media was littered with fan outrage and ridicule.  I absolutely REFUSE to believe that none of this made it back to JR.

So they wipe the slate clean, fans' hopes start to slowly return a bit, and then they let us know the old drunk is going to be around the club again?!?!?!?!  I mean, really, who tf does that?  I had no idea it was possible to misread a situation this poorly.  I refuse to believe Grifol had any say whatsoever in this decision....as a leader, it's important for the players, fans, media, and organization to understand that the past is behind us and he's bringing about changes.  This completely flies in the face of what a good leader would want to happen.

Oh I don’t think anyone is penciling them in. A lot has to go right but they do have a bunch of talent. They absolutely can win the division. I don’t know that they’ll be considered favorites to do so though.

There are better teams than them for sure. The best team in baseball finishes with the best record after 162. The winner of the tournament wins the World Series though. This year, the best team won the title. Philadelphia got there though. Atlanta won it in 2021. It happens. Get into the playoffs, variance sets in, professional athletes get hot and anything can happen because it’s such a small sample.

Yeah and one of the teams that is better than them is Cleveland.

Also, the ALC is and always has been a joke for the most part.

If they're not contenders in the other 2 AL divisions then they're not contenders period.

Winning the ALC by being the tallest dwarf is not an accomplishment worth celebrating.

If the last 30 years have taught us anything, it is that just because an area has a population, doesn't make it a good place for a pro sports franchise.

    Truth.

    See: Arizona Coyotes

There aren't a lot of untapped markets for a baseball team though. The reason I gravitate toward Charlotte is that the Knights have been there and the Sox affiliate for years and they might have a following there already.

Maybe a new owner would want to fight for a bigger share of Chicago before jumping ship.

That being said, it's probably easier to run a team like the Rays/A's in Charlotte than Chicago, and moving would give the owner small market draft picks and stuff.

I really don’t know why people would think this is even a remote possibility. Chicago is the 3rd largest market in the country. The AL will not abandon it

Because the Cubs pretty much own Chicagoland.

Best estimate I've got is 30% of Chicago baseball fans are Sox fans.

That's based on Twitter followers, which is somewhat newfangled and doesn't represent older generations very well, but does the job to a certain degree.

If the Sox moved to Charlotte they'd have a similar market and no competition.

I’d actually like to know which team is this example of a team that is built to maybe win 89 games, sneaks into the playoffs, and then wins a title. The most recent example I have might be the 03 Marlins?
04 - Boston. Was a wild card team, improbable ALCS, but was also a perennial playoff team and will show up again soon.

05 - might be the team on here with the least sustained success. Might be the most out of nowhere title in 20 years.

06 - Cardinals - everyone makes a big deal of them winning 82 games, but the same team won 100 games the year before and was in the 04 World Series. That’s a sustained period of excellence.

07 - hey Boston again, maybe they weren’t a fluke.

08 - Phillies - was a surprise at the time but they made the playoffs 5 straight years.

09 - Yankees. Most recent example I have of a team getting a title in FA.

    10. 12. 14. Giants. There were a couple wild card appearances in there but that’s seriously sustained success.

    11 - Cardinals again.

    13 - Red Sox again.

15 - Royals - complete rebuild, “best system in baseball history”, two straight World Series appearances.

16 - Cubs - made NLCS the year before, 5 straight playoff appearances.

17 - Astros. Bit of help from a trash can, but have made the playoffs every year since.

    18 - Red Sox again.

19 - Nationals - was a wild card team, but had 5 playoff appearances and 4 division titles since 2012, never finished worse than second.

20 - Dodgers. Definition of sustained success.

21 - Braves - have now won the NL East 5 straight years.

    22 - Astros again.

This seems very non random to me. There are zero examples of the Rockies or Marlins or Diamondbacks or Pirates sneaking in with an 88 win season and winding up with a title. Teams like that have made the World Series a couple times but I don’t see a win. Every one of them is a multi-year contender who wins their division repeatedly, the shortest stint other than the 05 White Sox is probably the Royals who couldn’t afford to keep a team that made two straight World Series appearances together.

Titles are going to franchises that are excellent for years.

And the Sox from 00-08 finished worse than 2nd twice( once in a season they won 90 games btw) and won 3 division titles in that span.

Also from 1990-2008 the Sox had the 5th highest winning percentage in baseball, despite only winning 4 divisions and one title.

So was it really a fluke, or for one year did all of the right buttons get pushed?

They also have a lot of interesting pitching in their top 10 to 15.

Hendriks for Mauricio, Tidwell and Hartwig.

Mauricio is a potential long-term answer at 2B or SS, Tidwell is a ways away but has a lot of upside, and Hartwig is an older prospect that has already reached the upper minors and helps with depth there.

To answer the original question, you roll into the season with Yas and Seby. With limited resources, I'd rather try to address 2B or the outfield.

I don't see how you can do that. It's basically punting the catcher position. How can you possibly count on Grandal to do anything other than DH?

Sox have to convince teams that trading Hendriks isn't a cost cutting move. In order to do that and preserve that leverage the Sox would have to make another move 1st.

So the Sox must make a move. Either sign someone like Duvall or go after some FA relief pitcher.

That way it may open up better offers for Hendriks that still may end up saving money or getting a better prospect if someone like Duvall or a relief pitcher is already in the fold.

Not a good idea to trade Hendriks unless you get the other pieces 1st.

Then  a Kelly for Escobar trade is more likely and you wouldn't have to move Hendriks.

If Hendriks is moved soon then that will signal to me that it'll be a cost cutting move where they get prospects.

If they get some need pieces 1st you can pay for them with Hendriks savings afterwards and still have prospects.

I hope the actual trade is Kelly for Escobar. Makes more sense than anything else.

Until they’re wrong once, I will continue to believe they know more than anyone else on social media about the Sox

I don't believe Eloy vs Wall's water carrying for Jerry's cheapness. I do think he's credible otherwise. That's what ownership WANTS the fanbase to think.

4th OF, bullpen (I like a cheap Alex Reyes deal), or even a 2B like Segura.  Got to get an impactful piece for him that can help in 2023 and ideally a live arm with options that can potentially help offset the loss in the bullpen.  I think Pearson has a legit shot at being a high leverage reliever so when combined with a guy like Jansen I think you have to consider it, especially if helps in other areas.

Pearson and Crochet could be a nasty back end of the Bullpen. It sucks that GC isn't going to be back until July or August, but I think the Sox are considering trading Hendriks because of a) his elbow issues and b) They have faith in Crochet being the closer in 2024.

However, I think that the more likely scenario for the catcher issue is Grandal for Perez in some form.

The Royals could easily play Grandal at DH/1B while getting out of the last 2 years of Perez and starting Melendez at C.

The issue with that deal is idk if it could be done straight up because of salary issues or the Sox would have to add because there's a possibility Grandal is just too injured.

Another issue with that deal is that it makes the Sox more right handed.

Notice he said their goal is to bounce back and win the AL Central….ahh I remember the good ol days when it was WS Title aspirations

They've never had WS aspirations. It's always been "Make the playoffs and hope for the best." One year that got them a title, so now they think it can happen again.
