QUOTE(Timoperezrulez @ Mar 21, 2006 -> 10:13 AM) What the hell did Boston do to improve? You mean besides signing Beckett and Tavarez and acquiring Crisp and Pena? I don't know if I'd rank their offseason at #4, but they did strengthen their rotation significantly with Beckett and their 'pen with Tavarez. The loss of Damon was more than offset by Crisp and Pena.

QUOTE(Fundamentals ruined baseball @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 09:31 PM) Never had a doubt Sosa used. But did Belle use? How about Thomas? Are we realllly sure... Frank has gone on the record several times saying that he's never used steroids in his professional career. He admitting to using for a few weeks in either high school or college, but stopped because they were screwing up his swing. Plus, Frank wouldn't be so freaking fat if he were on roids. Not sure about Belle, although we know that he corked his bats. Plus he's had some serious anger management problems. I wouldn't put it past him.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 21, 2006 -> 07:58 AM) And here is his article from last year. 14. Chicago White Sox Trading Carlos Lee for Scott Podsednik wasn't real smart because Podsednik's just not as good an offensive player. But Podsednik shouldn't be terrible either. He only had a .313 OBP last year, but it was .379 the year before. I think he'll regain some of the lost ground this season. And while stealing bases isn't tremendously important, Podsednik is very good at it, with an 83 percent success rate in his career. Yeah, stealing bases isn't important at all.

With all due respect to Coop, he has his work cut out for him with Thornton. We'll see...

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 10:01 PM) i bet this movie is anti-bush too! No, it's just incredibly stupid and not worth $8. But whatever floats your boat...

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 07:33 PM) Do you REALLY not understand that its being hyped BECAUSE Its complete garbage? It's all a big joke man. They made a serious movie with this premise and people are laughing at how stupid not only the title, but the hilarity of whose casted. I don't know how you don't understand this. What I do understand is that the studio is using people like you to hype a stupid movie over the Internet for free publicity and to increase their box office receipts. What I don't understand is why you allow them to. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 05:08 PM) This has the potential to be as bad as Plan 9. Or maybe Weekend at Bernie's 2.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 05:28 PM) For the movie version, they took the plot line from the book, flipped it to the Balkans, and made it because the President was embroiled in a sex scandal. Given how long the accusations against Clinton had been going on, and the fact that the Balkans had been destabilized since the early 90's (The Dayton Accords on Bosnia were signed in 1996) it sure looks like it was adapted from the book to be more applicable to the environment into which it was being released. Wag the Dog came out a full year before the Lewinsky scandal. Our involvement in the Balkans wasn't widely-viewed as a diversionary tactic. However, Clinton's bombing of Baghdad during his impeachment hearings in 1999 certainly was.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 05:25 PM) Not to nitpick, but when the main focus of your argument is about your opponent's grammar and Dan Rather, especially when its about bias in film, you seem to be losing track of your point. My main point was about anti-Bush bias in the media, which Hollywood is a part of... I haven't lost track of anything.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 05:07 PM) In 1964 Fail-Safe was released. An anti-nuke political statement. In 1964 Dr. Strangelove was released. An anti-nuke political statement. Point taken, although opposition in this country was minimal at most then. The movie was written and filmed years earlier. We weren't at war in 1930... ... or 1946. Still very early on in the Vietnam War, before opposition became strong. Which, ironically, was right smack in the middle of Vietnam but about the Korean War. I wouldn't say that it's "as anti-war as it gets" but, yes, the fact that they were medics makes it definitely anti-war. Vietnam still in its infancy... And we were out of Vietnam by then.

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 04:59 PM) i don't think i can argue with a propoganda machine anymore. So, do you guys get like emails everyday with your daily GOP sheep catch phrases or is it a phone tree or what? No, I just watched 60 Minutes and saw Dan Rather lie to millions of Americans with my own eyes. Tell me again how "Wag the Dog" (released in 1997) was written about Clinton's bombing of Baghdad during his impeachment hearings (1999). And apparently only conservatives know how to use proper grammar and spelling.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Mar 19, 2006 -> 09:50 AM) Wait a second...this is a REAL movie??? The title is so stupid, and everything I have seen on it has looked so stupid, that I have been thinking this was just another internet joke. But this is REAL!?! It's amazing how the Internet can hype and popularize complete garbage.

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 03:06 PM) you know what you want to believe...i'm saying they are comments on our times not malicious attacks to turn the nation on bush, he's done that well on his own. CBS tried to take down Bush right before the '04 election with a fabricated story. If you still want proof that the media has it in for him, there's your smoking gun. So, Hollywood was against Bush 41 back then as well, huh? What a shocker! How ironic that after it's release, the movie unintentionally depicted the actions of Clinton during his impeachment hearings. Talk about a gun backfiring!

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 12:58 PM) HOw about Wag the Dog Wag the Dog was released well before Clinton bombed Iraq during his impeachment hearings. And you don't have very many other examples to back up your claim. If you want to believe that the release of Syriana, V for Vendetta, and Jarhead two or more years after our invasion of Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with the Iraq War, go ahead. I know better.

I love these quotes from Mariner Dave about Borchard... So Borchard, who is 27 and has been in the Sox farm system since 2000, has a horribly-flawed approach at the plate that "isn't easily fixable", but he thinks that Seattle is suddenly going to fix it? Sounds a bit overly-optimistic, given that the Mariners organization hasn't produced anything special at the plate since the mid-90s. From what I've read about Thornton, I actually agree with Dave that Borchard has a better shot of being a decent MLB player, but it isn't by much. Whether it's a rigid turd produced from a high-fiber diet or diarrhea, crap is crap.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 12:21 PM) Um, what exactly is the alternative? Pull aid out of Afghanistan, let the warlords spend another 2-3 years building up money (and weapons) from the opium crop, and then watch the Central Government fall, followed by more years of civil war or a return of the Taliban? It's kind of difficult to FORCE another nation to abide by the rules of Democracy. And it's very unfortunate that American lives and tax dollars are being spent so that we can play nanny to these childish, ass-backward nations.

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 11:45 AM) see, anti war? I don't know where you're finding these words in my posts... I don't know how I'm making any sense at all of your poorly-worded posts. I'm still waiting for your examples of "these types of movies" from the Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, and FDR administrations. And I'm still waiting for an example of a Syriana-esque movie during the Clinton or Carter administrations.

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 11:39 AM) There is a think about the motives of your elected officials agenda. As there always has been, and always will be...there's no use in getting all soft just because the man you elected was in office. Wow, that makes absolutely no sense. There were anti-war movies during the Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, and FDR administrations? Would you like to cite some examples? And could you provide examples of a time when three anti-war/fasicm movies came out within a year during the Carter and Clinton administrations?

QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) They didn't come out during the iraq war...the iraq war was in march 03 to april 03 occupation of Iraq. Which was right around the time the decision was made to fund and start production on them. What a coincidence! They have the right to release whatever they want. And when it's obvious that they're pushing a political agenda, I have the right to call them on it. And I guess that I should just shut up while you and your liberal friends in Hollywood tell us what's good for America and what isn't? Talk about censorship. :rolly FWIW, I never called for theatres to "censor" these movies. I'm simply calling out Hollywood on its movtives. QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 11:16 AM) If you don't like movies that may make you think or brings up radical ideas than you should probably go check out "shaggy dog". No, I think I'll wait until "Snakes on a Plane" comes out. That looks like a real top-notch flick.

Throwing out the Taliban was a huge step forward, but you're not going to change everyone's minds overnight. Sadly, this doesn't surprise me.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) How many of these movies that you're railing against have you actually watched? How much time have you spent in Iraq to actually witness the regime change that you're railing againt?

How many babes will Konerko Steal this season?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 10:05 AM) Problem is, the season starts in 13 days. That's not a lot of time for Cooper. That's why I assumed that Thornton still had at least one option left. You can't fully evaluate a pitcher over a 13-day period in Spring Training. So, their only optoins appear to be (1) actually trying to evaluate Thornton in 13 days or (2) putting Hermanson on the DL and Thornton on the 25-man roster, hoping that Cooper will be able to work out his mechanics over the first month of the season.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 09:45 AM) See, this is why I don't rely on other people to do my Google searches very often. Took me 2 seconds. I shouldnt' be so damn lazy. Well, then he may never make the 25-man roster.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2006 -> 09:18 AM) Contreras is almost certainly not 34. Cuban record keeping isn't exactly first-world. Oh, I'm sure that he's probably 36 or so. And I'm sure that El Duque is probably closer to 38.
