QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) I highly doubt that. Although, I must have told my wife 18 times that I'd watch the s*** out of a Miles/Sawyer cop show based on their characters in Purgatory. Agreed. With Lapidus as Police Chief!

QUOTE (kev211 @ May 27, 2010 -> 09:33 AM) Obviously theres no way of knowing if thats true or not, but if it is that's really cool. Neither Penny nor Juliet were season 1 characters. And Boone and Shannon reallllllly shouldn't have been there.

Jacob planned to kill MIB? If the only way that is possible is with a EM-immune person like Desmond, how did he expect Dharma to do anything? Any why would the Others KILL the Dharma people? MIB corrupted Ben? How? Ben only ever took orders from Jacob via Richard.

QUOTE (kev211 @ May 26, 2010 -> 08:21 PM) You can play that game forever if you wanted to. Why why why why why why why why. No, you can't. Face it, major motivations were unexplained and major elements ended up being completely arbitrary or pointless. The actions of the Others aren't even self-consistent.

QUOTE (kev211 @ May 26, 2010 -> 06:10 PM) Thank you. For example Jacob controlled who he wanted on the island, and maybe he made a rule or didn't allow people to have babies on the island because of it. There I just used information from the show to make an answer that was not given to me. It's not that hard. You didn't make an answer; you did what the writers did: shifted a mystery from one place to another. Why are the Others doing what they are doing? -Because Jacob tells them to. Why does Jacob tell them to do these things? ... How did Jacob become some kind of demi-god? -Some woman gave him powers. So how did she have powers? What was she? ... Why can't Smokey leave the island? -It's a Rule. What are the Rules? ...

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 26, 2010 -> 05:19 PM) The problem is what is the whole scheme? It's a very basic story about a people that come together after a tragedy and then eventually all die and leave for heaven or whatever together. Sure, but there was no indication that was all it was until the *last 20 minutes of the last episode*.

So the island was? - A place with a magic light in the center The others were who? - A bunch of people on the island who follow Jacob The asian guy and the temple was what? - Members of the Others, ultimately not very important The numbers did what? - Nothing really; they're mainly just easter eggs/weirdness Why push the button in the hatch? - It dissipated the energy buildup Significance of not being able to have children on the island? - Drama? Why did the island move? - I have no idea Was Whidmore dead when he left? - When he left?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 25, 2010 -> 02:54 PM) Season 1 - GREAT Season 2 - GREAT Season 3 - FAVORITE Season 4 - Good Season 5 - OK Season 6 - Awful 24: Redemption Movie prior to season 7 - GREAT Season 7 Very Good Season 8 - GREAT That's my quick 24 synopsis. I quit watching about a third through season 7. I think seasons 1-3 are great and it basically went downhill from there.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 25, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) And Sayid died in a self-less act. So did Michael. The island is racist.
-
QUOTE (hogan873 @ May 25, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) That was in the alternate world, which we learned was their "purgatory". The island did not exist in that world. I think the sole purpose of showing the sunken island was to make people think it was an alternate universe, either one created by The Incident or one created by Smokey winning.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 25, 2010 -> 12:56 AM) They didnt survive an explosion. The bomb neutralized the release of energy from the drilling. It's kind of like combining an acid and a base. Huh? Explosions cancel each other out?

Sepinwall http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-wat...er-life-brother I think he wraps it up pretty well. Ultimately, I'm one of the people who leans pretty strongly toward the plot/mythology over the characters.

Side note: +100 for return of Lapidus

QUOTE (kev211 @ May 24, 2010 -> 06:23 AM) What was the show ultimately revealed to be? The alt is purgatory/afterlife, and the island is what you saw for 6 seasons. Yes, I was referring to the alt/purgatory. I feel like they realized they couldn't think of a good way to wrap everything up, so they invented a completely new mystery (the alt) so they could solve it at the end. The only way it related to the island content is that the people were "purgatory-linked" because they went through a lot together.
-
QUOTE (kev211 @ May 24, 2010 -> 06:22 AM) Where exactly does the plot not make sense for you? Haven't you been reading the thread? They didn't explain the point of ultimate anything on the island: the light, the cork, Jacob, Smokey, the Rules, the contest, Desmond, time travel, etc. It's a giant MacGuffin.
-
QUOTE (kev211 @ May 24, 2010 -> 07:01 AM) Yes, and the island had nothing to do with purgatory. Right, the island had nothing to do with what the show was ultimately revealed to be. It could have been any set of events tying a set of people together.
-
QUOTE (kev211 @ May 24, 2010 -> 06:58 AM) Anyone whose b****ing about what the island is and all the mythology I'm sorry you didn't realize the show was character driven when you watched it. You set yourself up for disappointment by expecting anything more then what we got in that department. "The plot doesn't have to make sense; it's character driven!"...especially hard to buy that excuse when major characters have nonexistent or unexplained motivations. The mythology has always been a huge part of the show, and many of those elements added nothing in terms of character development.
-
QUOTE (jphat007 @ May 24, 2010 -> 04:45 AM) Well it is pretty hard to explain a smoke monster that can move and sound like that by any real world terms. There was never going to be a 'real' way to explain that. We're not asking for real world scientific explanations. There can be magical elements. But we don't even know the fundamental purpose of things or major motivations. What the hell was Smokey? When Desmond and Jack went down the hole, they found a plug in a well. When MiB went down the hole, he immediately turned into a powerful demi-god. Huh? Almost the whole season was people worrying about him getting off the island, but why? It's not like he was taking the Mystery Plug with him.
-
QUOTE (WHarris1 @ May 24, 2010 -> 04:24 AM) What in the world COULD HAVE possibly explained the s*** on the island? Anything they would have tried to explain that with would have been truly terrible So why did they paint themselves into a corner with so many mysteries that it became impossible to explain anything?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 24, 2010 -> 03:39 AM) I believe the alt Kimmel endings are jokes. Also, the Alt's purgatory. The island and off-island stuff were life, and the white light was heaven. Heaven is powered by a rock battery. Don't pull it out!
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 24, 2010 -> 03:38 AM) 3 alternate endings on Kimmel tonight. My guess was that Hurley would be the new Jacob and Ben would be his nemesis. Maybe that's one of the alternate endings. And was the whole island stuff part of purgatory as well? I dunno. What is the light? What does the plug do? What was Smokey?
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ May 24, 2010 -> 03:35 AM) I think the alternate universe was basically purgatory and then at the end they were going to heaven. But Hurley and Ben weren't dead. They were probably immortal too since Hurley was The Protector and Ben was his Richard.

TASTE OF CHICAGO: I've only been there once, but I wasn't impressed. You have to muscle through huge crowds to get extremely pricey, "meh" street food. I won't go back. TOURS: I took a lakefront boat tour once that was themed with some murder book/the World's Fair. It was nice, but I think a tour that goes along the river and points out things in the city would be better. Prices for these aren't bad. FOOD: Get pizza and italian beef somewhere. If you want something special, go to Alinea. It's a Top 10 restaurant in the world and an amazing meal you won't forget for a long time. It's incredibly expensive though. My fiance and I went and the bill ended up over $500 w/ drinks, tax, and tip.
