QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 10:57 PM) Who is Phillips? They had Heath Phillips last year, but he's long gone. Paul Phillips... a RH catcher who split time with Armstrong at Charlotte this year. He's got MLB experience. He was on KC's roster last year. He had a nice spring training. There was even some talk on the board back then whether the Sox should move/dump Toby and have Phillips as AJs backup. Given the choice, I'd bring up Cole Armstrong not Phillips.

MacDougal will get called up. Childers will not. There is no comparison between their stuff and ability. MacDougal's problem has been his inability to get the ball over the plate consistently since the middle of 2007... but it's a problem which seems to have gotten alot better recently.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 08:33 PM) There is no reason on earth a team in a pennant race should have to start Broadway or Richard. So.... no reason a team like Boston should have to start Bowden either then, right?

Wow. We've gotten our butts kicked 3 games in a row. Enough is enough.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) The great Egbert has allowed 4 runs in the 1st tonight. Figures. "Thank you sir, may I have another."

Charlotte @ Durham Egbert pitching Charlotte lost 7-2 Birmingham @ Mobile Cassel pitching Barons won 6-4 Winston-Salem @ Frederick Santeliz pitching Warthogs won 5-3 Kannapolis @ West Virginia Shirek pitching Beckham and Danks both with homeruns tonight. Kanny won 8-1 Great Falls @ Helena Skogley pitching Voyagers lost 4-3

Well... I can't find the info, so I'm going to assume I'm wrong. (I'm usually pretty careful double checking info before I post, but I was so sure I was right I didn't this time. My fault.) Ackkk... I hate being wrong. I've been married long enough, I should be used to being wrong by now. I get lots of practice at it.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 04:27 PM) He's put up some good numbers since finally getting over his arm troubles, but he still doesn't throw in the mid-90's. From what I've seen he seems to work in the 87-90mph range with his fastball. He's a good prospect, but with his control, change-up, and groundball ratio, if he worked in the mid-90's with his fastball he'd be an elite pitching prospect and well, well ahead of Poreda. He's got a shot at the Majors though. Well... I'm not drunk yet... but I could be wrong. So, I am looking for the scouting reports I thought I read with that info.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) If Egbert threw 95 we'd have never seen Lance Broadway or Clayton Richard up here. Are you talking about Poreda? No. I'm talking about Egbert. And if hadn't started out the year injured and then had a bad first month coming back from injury, we probably would have seen him up here rather than Broadway. Last 10 performances: Egbert has had 7 quality starts in his last 10 outings in Charlotte. Broadway? 3 QS in his last 10 outings. ERA in last 3 months (June, July, August): Egbert = 3.51 Broadway = 6.44
-
I agree with the list above (minus Lucy obviously). And I wouldn't be surprised if Egbert is added. He's only had one bad month this year, and that was in May. In his last 10 outings (60.2 innings), he has a 3.24 ERA with 54 K's and only 11 BBs. A pitcher who can throw 95mph with sink on the ball, not walk people, and throw for multiple innings could come in pretty handy. (And he's already on the 40-man roster.)
-
MacDougal seems to have snapped out of his snapped out of his year-and-a-half long funk recently. In his last 10 outing (15.2 innings), he has a 2.30 ERA and has struck out 25. That would be quite a plus for the pen if he could come up and give us something in September.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) Are you saying that, because the offense didn't score, that Vazquez is not at fault at all for the loss? He gave up 5 runs. EDIT: I RUE the day we acquired Vazquez. I find it interesting that anytime Javy has a less than stellar game, people come out the woodworks to roast his entire career. Consider that... Javy has given up 4 or fewer runs in 20 out of his 27 starts this year. The most runs he has given up in any start this year is 6. In other words, there haven't been any situations this year where a good offensive team should be out of a game because of Javy. And he's pitched 4 outstanding (not good... outstanding) games that he lost because the Sox didn't score s**t. So, he should be 14-10 this year, not 10-12. This following up 2007 where he was one of the best and most consistent starters in the American League and 15-8 on a team with one of the worst records in baseball. I'm not suggesting that he's Cy Young, just fascinated that a guy who been a much better than league average starter for the Sox continues to catch so much crap.

Jordan Kendall was named a first team Appalachian League all-star. Kendall was the White Sox's 11th-round pick last year but missed the season due to a broken finger. He made up for lost time, batting .319 with three homers and 25 RBIs, and ranked second in the league with 20 stolen bases in 48 games.

Kuhn named to Pioneer League All-Star First Team Slick-fielding shortstop Tyler Kuhn was named to the Pioneer League All-Star team for 2008. Joining him on the first team is pitcher Dexter Carter. Manager Chris Cron was named to the Honorable Mention list, along with Jesus Avila, Mike Grace, Daniel Hudson, Kent Gerst, and Kevin Skogley.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 03:03 AM) So Allen had 2 HRs, 7 RBI??? What a beast! Brandon has 7 homeruns and 14 RBIs in his last 10 games.

I find it interesting that this subject raises panic. ALL teams are "bad" against other good teams... relatively speaking. Look at the team by team standings grid on ESPN. Does Boston have a winning record against teams over .500? No. Do the Twins have a winning record against ANY good team this year? No. The only teams in the AL with winning records against other winning teams (Tampa and Angels) have done it by fattening up on a single team... not by dominating the entire field.

Warthogs clinch playoff berth FREDERICK, MD – The Winston-Salem Warthogs clinched the second half playoff berth with a 12-4 victory over the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Warthogs offense erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning on the way to their 14th win in the last 17 games and first postseason berth since 2005. Greg Paiml finished with three hits and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle while Francisco Hernandez tallied a season-high 5 RBI, including a three-run home run in the decisive eighth inning as the Warthogs collected 14 hits for the game.

Link MARIETTA, Ga. - Birmingham Barons closer Jon Link has been named the Southern League's top reliever, the league office announced Thursday. He was one of 15 players, and the only reliever, named to the league's post-season All-Star team and was the lone Baron selected. Entering Friday's game at Mobile, Link leads all of Minor League Baseball with 34 saves, just two shy of both the Barons team record and the Southern League record. He holds a 5-4 overall mark and a 3.07 ERA in 55 games of work this season. He has also struck out 65 in 55.2 innings on the mound. His 34 saves are the second-most in team history, trailing only the 36 recorded by Edwin Almonte in 2001 and matched by Joe Valentine the following season. A 24-year-old native of Columbus, Ohio, Link was named a mid-season Southern League All-Star as well, and last week was selected as the Barons' Most Valuable Pitcher in a vote by the team's coaches, players, and front office personnel. Link and the Barons are concluding the regular season with a five-game series at Mobile that began Thursday evening and runs through Labor Day. Birmingham will then take on Mississippi in the first round of the Southern League playoffs, and the opening game is scheduled to be played next Thursday night, September 4, in Birmingham.

I think Quentin will end up moving to RF and so Shelby would be in left. -

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 07:21 PM) Too bad there's really no spot for Shelby until JD is gone. I'm not too familiar with his glove/height/weight, otherwise I might say he could be our CF'er next year if we get rid of Konerko. Too quick. I think he'll have 2 more years in the minors before we see him in Chicago. He could be part of the youth movement with Danks and Beckham though. They'll probably all be coming up pretty close to the same time. -
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 08:12 PM) What? I meant it could get worse and end up being like the KC game... it just wasn't there yet.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 07:10 PM) Wow. This has been the absolute worst game this season. Ohhh... I think that Sunday game in Kansas City still has it beat. But then again, this game ain't over yet.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 07:05 PM) Angel Hernandez sucks at his job, and is the most hated umpire among his peers. Add me to his hate list. He's brutal.

One sort of interesting development... Mike MacDougal seems to have gotten his **** back together lately. Seriously.... I'm not pulling your leg. In his last 10 outings covering 15 2/3 innings, he's only given up 4 runs (2.30 ERA). In addition, he's struck out 25 while only walking 9. So... his WHIP is 1.21 during this stretch; his K/9 is 14.36. What a huge bonus it would be if he could come up September 1 and make a contribution to the pen.

Beckham 0-5 tonight. That makes him 1-22 in his last 5 games.
