You'd barely know there was a baseball game going on if you were listening to Farmer, Stone, and special guest Moose.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) BTW, IIRC, after the last Gulf hurrican disrupted the oil and gas rigs, energy prices went through the roof. Lousy spectators! I hate them so much! QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) I'm still waiting for the headlines praising the speculators for pushing the price of crude oil down about $23 in the last week and a half, not to mention the gasoline futures down almost 60 cents, heating oil down 60 cents, and natural gas down nearly 4.000 points or about 33%! Wonderful spectators!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) Which is the biggest problem of all when you have the federal government involved. There is zero incentive to do it right. There are no consiquenses for bad actions or inaction. What are the consequences for doing it wrong in the private market these days? Those who run giant companies into the ground still make out pretty well for themselves.

Who is the Best GM in Baseball?
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 10:24 AM) People are giving their opinions on a White Sox message board, what do you expect? I'm just asking for someone to give a reasonable explanation/ justification for picking KW, that's all.

FWIW, the CFTC issued a report says that it finds no evidence of price manipulation. Of course, clueless Congressmen disagree. http://uk.reuters.com/article/businessIndu...036879720080711

I like the guy who sings songs about the beer. I've seen him around section 145.

Who is the Best GM in Baseball?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) I count trophies. The Twins have like 4 playoff appearances in the 00s and have 1 playoff series win. The White Sox have 2 playoff appearances, only 1 under KW, and have 3 series wins, all coming in the same postseason. Yeah, I can be a homer too. The Sox have been a better organization because they keep the talent they need, they get the talent they need, and they have won one. Most of that is largely due to KW. Ok, then give KW best GM in the AL Central. That I can see. But best GM in baseball? If you're just counting on the results of the crap shoot that is the playoffs, you have to give it to Epstein. I'm still not seeing what criteria makes KW the best GM.

Who is the Best GM in Baseball?
QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 06:55 PM) I voted for epstein. But I can see the love for Kenny. 1 WS trophy and only 1 season under .500. Results speak louder than unproven prospects. I count playoffs as results, not seasons above .500. Especially with how weak the central was for a long time. Is he horrible? No, but I really don't see how there's any way you can say he's the best.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 11:57 AM) What happens when a bunch of Congressmen, who apparently know nothing about the financial markets, decide they need to lower the price of oil? You get this: the "Stop Excessive Speculation Act". Main points of the bill: Ugh. Now, I am all for more CFTC market surveillance. They are shorthanded. And transparency could be good. But look at the two bolded parts. This is idiotic. Do they know what a futures contract is? Do they know anything about how the markets work? Without speculators, THERE IS NO MARKET. With no market, two very bad things can happen. One, the buyers of oil can't hedge anymore, so they will be subject to even wilder price fluctuations than the already are. Two, the oil producers have much more control over the sale of their product, and now THEY can game the system, which is far worse than the current scenario. Hang on to your wallets, folks. If these laws actually go into effect, and if the CFTC actually tries to do these things, the price of gas and oil will go wild, and mostly wildly up. Idiots. We need to make a law where any Congressman/ woman who proposes something that transparently stupid is immediately removed from office. No votes, no notice, no severance. They hand you a box and you're gone by the end of the day. Security will see you out.

Anyone have an explanation for picking KW? Big payroll and only one playoff appearance in 8 years does scream "best GM" to me.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 11:39 AM) I don't think anyone said he will be nominated because he died. But, he'll clearly win now that he died and people going insane with praise. Even if there's a better performance before the Oscars roll around, Ledger has it wrapped up. Why? They don't give out very many posthumous Oscars. Only seven have ever been nominated.

Bears going to the Super Bowl?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 19, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) It's all about the O-line. Last year's was just plain bad, among the worst in the league. This year's line still has some gapping holes even if Chris Williams can step it up from the first game. Add to that what looks like a bad WR, bad QB (but which bad QB will get the job?!), and very questionable running game, and you're left with a pretty bad offense still.

Bears going to the Super Bowl?
We all laughed when KW said Detriot getting Miggy Cabrera put them in a better position to compete with the White Sox... They had fantastic field position all last year and were still god awful.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) I'd be surprised if you could name one human being that wasn't a hypocrite about something at one point in their life. Here's a big difference: Al Gore has literally made millions of dollars off of this movement, yet he doesn't seem to follow it himself.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) Well if the nation were to be off carbon based energy like he is proposing then wouldn't that, in turn, force him to utilize the same non fossil fuel energies? It's not like he's proposing that everyone in the US should use alternative energies while he should still be granted the ability to use fossil fuels. Shouldn't he be leading by example anyway?

IndyMac collapse
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) Again, no one said this was all Schumers fault. I'd love to see the person that did. Uh, how about that editorial you posted? The headline: Chuck Schumer Causes $1.3 Billion Run on IndyMac: Bank Failure Results From the article: So I'd say that the poorly-written op-ed you posted, the article that started this whole debate, said exactly that.
