  1. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 11:04 AM) Why do you keep acting like the walks only mean something if you have speed? Swish is hardly ideal, but he's still 1000 times better than Konerko, and the difference is we only have a replacement for one of them. That's why all the hate is going towards Paulie now. Swish still does at least one thing well, unlike Paulie. That one thing is getting on base, which does mean a lot whether you like it or not. His walks have at least led him to score a pretty good 13 runs so far this month. And I believe he is borderline top 20 in the AL in runs scored. Simply getting on base will do wonders for you. That said he still needs to pick up his play elsewhere. Especially when ~50% of your runs come off of HR's. No need to steal 2nd in that case.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 10:51 AM) Not really. Its some walks. Swisher has 6 career steals and bats 7th. Walks with your 8th and 9th batters coming up aren't as valuable as walks with the best hitters coming up, plus he plays an offensive position. His slugging pct. is virtually identical to Uribe's last year. His average is about the same. He strikes out even more. The board wanted Uribe released. The board obviously loves walks and wants Swisher to play 1B. Give it time. We haven't seen 3 or 4 years of Swisher sucking at baseball first-hand. Also, "some walks" is 64 for Swish vs. 12 for Uribe. That's a huge difference. Uribe has 35 steals and 31 CS, so he's pretty awful at that. Uribe is at least above-average with the glove. Swisher doesn't have that going for him, so if his current production continues into next season I guarantee you'll see some hate for him. I think Konerko and Thome get criticized more because we expect them (and pay them) to produce at a higher level. Nobody should expect Swisher to be batting .300 with 40 HR's.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 04:51 PM) going the way of some other things... is that implying it's going to the graveyard? Cap and trade has been the only thing that works. Unless they can show something else that will work better I don't know how you can disagree with it. (unless you are from WV) Cap and trade has been a massive failure everywhere its been implemented.
  4. Some people were passed over because their spouse donated to a Democrat. Monica Goodling was dumb enough to state that in plain English in an email.
  5. http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/special/s0807/final.pdf Disgraceful. Kyle Sampson, Alberto Gonzalez' chief of staff, was particularly bad. http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/...ring_at_doj.php
  6. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) Sure it is, because he then CALCULATED what this would mean to people. That's a mockery of God and religion. But again, that's a BIG *IF* he allowed it to become public - because remember what you're dealing with when you're talking about the wall and what it really means. If that was Obama's plan, I would agree. But just look at the article they published -- "Obama gave it to everyone and told the press we could print it! And if you don't believe that, we can take it anyway because he's not Jewish."
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) It all depends on the reasoning, and any relevant change in the situation, IMO. Agreed. "Flip-flopping" because you're a political wind sock is a terrible trait. "Flip-flopping" because some time over the past 3, 5, 10, etc. years you've learned new information and/ or events have changed and your reasoning has brought you to new conclusions is a good trait. We see plenty of the former out of politicians on the national stage.
  8. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:35 AM) It is my understanding that when the FDIC takes over a bank, it closes for a couple days and reopens under a new bank name. Your money is safe and guaranteed - especially if the amount invested is less than 100,000 dollars. Even the people at IndyMac had ATM access while the bank closed. Found this on the FDIC's website regarding another bank closing: http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/failed/NetBank.html Looks like the money isn't really tied up for long, if at all.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:33 AM) That is my biggest fear. I really don't want to go through all of the red-tape and having my money tied up. I've got money stashed away elsewhere, but it'd really put my gf in a bind to make her car/ student loan/ mortgage payments if her money were unavailable for several weeks. Do you have a good source for banks that aren't being bent over by the subprime crisis? I'd hate to open another account and have that bank be on shaky ground a month later.
  10. My girlfriend and I both have our main accounts there (not a ton of money, we're both in our early 20's). What's the procedure if a bank does go under? How long does it take to get the FDIC money?
  11. Yes, 3 K's on ball 4 to end the game. Way to go!
  12. I hate Vazquez. He'll always be a mediocre pitcher who everyone says has "great stuff" but can't manage to get people out.
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 09:22 PM) oh i think it will. It'll help more than offshore drilling in the short term. How will it drive down prices? Also, I hate Dick Durbin.
  14. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 06:54 AM) Im wondering how that fan is doing. Can you imagine sitting there watching a brawl unfold, and all of the sudden a pitcher comes running up and whips a ball at you full speed from about 10-15 feet closer than a mound? Lawsuit anyone?
  15. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) Yeah, at the WR position maybe. But he will always be the most valuable kick/punt returner in the NFL, so it doesnt matter. He still has plenty of value in that respect. Right, but the most valuable KR/PR will get paid less than the most valuable KR/PR + 2nd or 3rd WR.
  16. Every day that Hester misses, he diminishes his value to the Bears. There is no one on the team who needs more practice at his position than Hester.
  17. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) DaBearSox, this isnt directed just at you, yours is just the last the last I read, but this attitude some of you have about Hamilton and the "he did drugs omg hate hate hate" blah blah blah whatever is annoying. I'd be willing to bet a vast majority of people on this board who are over 18 have at least tried some drug at some point in their life one time. Do you really think Hamilton went out to get himself addicted? Do you believe thats what he was trying to do? Do you think he said to himself the first time he tried something "Yes, i cant wait to begin the downward spiral and ruin my life"? No, he didnt. Of course I am not advocating what he did, but it is very commendable the way he has been able to pick his life up and get his act together. Many people are not able to do that. It is admirable the way he has come back and gotten over his addiction. What he is doing now hopefully prevents some kids from making similar mistakes in the future. That being said and off my chest, to respond to the actual point o fthe thread, CQ has a good shot, but his lack of exposure will hurt him. Plus, if JD stays hot and get those RBI numbers up, teammates sometimes can have a negative affect on each other (splitting votes). And, you can never count out ARod when it comes to these types of things. America loves the redemption story. And it is great that Hamilton has cleaned up. But he gets more praised for falling hard and picking himself up and playing at an MVP level than someone who didn't f*** it all up in the first place.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 03:58 PM) Yeah, those things you bring up are definitely more likely to occur than a guy having half his face burnt perfectly down the middle and being able to survive and function properly afterwards, a balloon that is picked up by a plane just over a crowded urban area to pull a man dressed as a bat with the ability to soar by using electrically charged capes, and every single elaborate plan that the Joker devised through that movie. Thanks for pointing out how much more believable the Dark Knight was than No Country For Old Men. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulton_surfac...recovery_system
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) Let me know next time Javy wins a game. Let me know when it makes sense to judge a pitcher based on W-L.
  20. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) God tigers will gain a game and we lost a chance to go up 2.5 on twins. stupid sox defense and stupid konerko It's the fifth inning.
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) Texas with anothert run adn then a double steal. Ozzie needs to take the kid out now before this falls apart End him on a high note -- striking out Hamilton for the third time today.
  22. You'd barely know there was a baseball game going on if you were listening to Farmer, Stone, and special guest Moose.
