  1. A YEAR AFTER TRUMP, DEMOCRATS, SOCIALISTS, AND POPULISTS SWEEP ELECTIONS A wide range of different types of candidates with different messages in areas across the country won last night. There's no One Neat Trick To Win Every Election, and I think that's one of the most important messages to take away from last night. Gotta get the right candidates with the right message for the race and area, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
  2. Maine's LePage, a guy who was basically as boorish, awful and racist as Trump before Trump ran, is refusing to implement the Medicaid expansion passed by voters last night. The congress in Maine passed the expansion multiple times, but LePage always vetoed it.
  3. Bar Association dubs fourth Trump judicial nominee unqualified
  4. <!--quoteo(post=3573654:date=Nov 8, 2017 -> 08:39 AM:name=GoSox05)--> QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 08:39 AM) <!--quotec-->Lot's of good results from last. Lot of DSA backed candidates won some smaller elections. Larry Krasner winning the Philly DA job is something to watch. Danica Roem beating Bob Marshall is just so good. He is such a pile of s***. This response was perfect I'm glad to see the DSA actually being an effective political force for more leftist candidates rather than an in-fighting, vote-splitting 3rd party s***show like the Greens. e: After flipping Washington's Senate last night, Democrats now have the entire West Coast on lock down.
  5. They actually have a good shot at taking the absurdly gerrymandered Virginia state house and would then control the whole process, but for sure they broke the Republicans veto proof majority. Still hoping Anthony Kennedy does the right thing in the gerrymandering case in front of scotus right now. I'd love a national independent redistricting committee law to end all of these shenanigans. Fox news has spent next to no time covering the results last night or this morning, instead focusing on the latest blow to the Clinton administration and highlights from the 2016 election
  6. One of the biggest issues people are citing in exit polls are "guns"
  7. This is big because Dems now have influence over 2020 redistricting in VA.
  8. Cleaning up in VA. Hold the governor's seat Might flip the house An actual socialist who was abandoned by the party won in Manassas A trans woman beat the House whip who had introduced an anti trans bathroom bill
  9. Lots of reports of robocalls in NoVa (dem territory) today erroneously telling people their voting places or dates have changed.
  10. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 12:56 PM) When I said he misses the point, I meant that people aren't criticizing politicians for offering "thoughts and prayers", they are criticizing them because that is all they ever do and doesn't help anything. Rush is too close minded to see the big picture. Or he's on ludes. He knows what he's doing. He's made many millions doing it, and as awful as it is, he's very skilled at it.
  11. The most ridiculous case that comes to mind for me is that Saudi millionaire in Britain who "tripped" into raping a teen and actually got off on all charges. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime...e-a6774946.html
  12. In Nevada, the GOP is trying to initiate recall elections against numerous Democratic Senators in order to retake that chamber. https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/so...pecial-election There are a lot of really unhealthy things going on in our democracy right now.
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:39 AM) Poor choice for a first link. I was rushed and should have looked at that one more. His points on there are still good ones. Oh wait, I forgot. You don't believe anyone who isn't credentialed in a way that you agree with. My bad. You talked about constitutional scholars and then gave a link to a guy who isn't a constitutional scholar. Why would you take this non-expert's opinion over any other opinion, expert or not? Why should anyone else care what he has to say? Evaluating sources and their legitimacy is an important tool people should have and use. And I already gave you the easy out. Just point to Scalia's opinion in Heller for the argument that "well-regulated militia" doesn't preclude an individual right to firearms from an actual recognized voice on the Constitution. I'm sure you can find actual Constitutional scholars to make your point (go hunt through the amicus briefs in Heller and I'll sure you'll find many on both sides of "well-regulated") That doesn't mean I necessarily agree with Scalia's opinion in that case, but his word is the final say and he's recognized as someone with relevant expertise and knowledge. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:35 AM) Looks like you did look it up then. Bravo for you. I didn't "look it up." Heller was a fairly recent landmark decision. I read it when it was issued.
  14. Donald Trump Jr. is taking to twitter to urge Republicans to VOTE GILLESPIE! in VA tomorrow The election is today. I wonder if he thinks 11/8 is always election day?
  15. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) I meant the meaning. That was just the first link I found. I am sure with your Googlefu you can find it. Capitalism calls. You insulted Quin's intelligence and claimed that constitutional scholars much smarter than him have decided this issue. You even provided a link! 1) The link was to a crank website 2) The quote is from some random guy with no scholarly background on the constitution 3) The language of the second amendment and really the entire Constitution is far from settled among actual, legitimate Constitutional scholars and court members. I'm not sure what I'm even supposed to be looking for on Google, or why your "lazy ass" can't support your own arguments.
  16. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) He doesn't have a resume that I can see at that link, and a google search of his name doesn't retrieve any "constitutional scholar" qualifications. Suffice it to say, however, that you can find actual constitutional scholars - even on the Supreme Court! - that come down on either side of the meaning of the 2nd Amendment... The easy way out would just be pointing to Scalia's opinion in Heller. No need to site some weird website that quotes a random dude with no credentials and claim he's some sort of super smart Consitutional scholar.
  17. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:02 AM) Look it up, lazyass. I did. He appears to be (or was, back in the 1990's) associated with the Cognitive Studies Department at UW-Milwaukee. His PhD seems to be about cognitive issues, not anything to do with Constitutional analysis or law in general. What do you think his credentials actually are? Why is this site to be trusted as a definitive source? Who is Brian T. Halonen and why does he have the final say on what "well-regulated militia" means?
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:59 AM) At this point I can't see how the guy is still not in jail. $$$ He paid off the DA. He has power and influence. He's not especially unique in that regard.
  19. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) Constitutional scholars way smarter than you have already tackled that so yo get no response from me. http://www.constitution.org/cons/wellregu.htm This guy does not appear to be a constitutional scholar.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) Gotta love when once again our government fails to uphold the standards it demands of others. The Military Is Reporting Almost No Domestic Abusers to the Main Gun Background Check Database
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 09:51 AM) Gun control means using 2 hands. Nice joke, next complement the shooter who murdered over two dozen people on his trigger discipline! Boy he sure had great two-handed control of his gun as he shot that 18-month old! LOL! Democrats. Don't. Control. Congress. I don't know why you keep bringing up Democrats. They don't have power. Republicans do. If they wanted to do something, literally anything, they could do it entirely without Democratic votes. What the Democrats propose isn't relevant except as a weak deflection from "nothing will ever work or could ever work." You love guns and you're willing to accept dozens of people murdered in mass shootings. That's fine, just be honest about it. You don't want any additional gun control.
  22. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 09:48 AM) it didn't go to the floor because of the language. “It shall be unlawful for any person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer or possess, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, a trigger crank, a bump-fire device or any part, combination of parts, component, device, attachment or accessory that is designed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun,” the bill states. That bolded part is what kills it. You replace a trigger or a spring and the gun fires a half second faster, you now violated a law. Springs break and get replaced all the time. Some people need a lighter trigger pull, but in theory that makes the gun shoot faster, so off to jail for you! yeah, that's common sense alright. Feinstein's bill is irrelevant to whether Republicans who, again, control Congress and the White House, want to actually do something about gun control.
  23. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/05/politics/pau...trol/index.html Did they bring it to the floor for a vote? Do they have hearings, mark-ups, committees scheduled?
  24. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sen-feinste...ory?id=50276506 Okay, nothing stopped Republicans from crafting and introducing their own bill, especially since they actually control Congress. edit: and Feintstein's bill didn't go to the floor for a vote because, again, Republicans control the Senate.
