QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 11:24 AM) 23-24 I think. The back story is I thought we'd already broken up and then she showed up to my house to take me to her bday party and I had to dump her again.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:48 AM) Microaggressions. just another way to say you are racist/sexist/ageist/etc. whether you are or not. You all must hang out with some pretty rude people. If I saw a white couple with a black or asian kid, I wouldn't think twice about it, much less ask them if they are a spouse or kidnapping victim. Unless they were struggling to get away or something, of course. Not saying people aren't out there and can do it, just that is seemed embellished to me. Perhaps not, as the timeframe for those events to have happened could have been a large span. Either way, there should be no stigma for adoption. And apparently some people need to learn to be quiet. This just happened recently, and could easily apply to a black couple who adopted a white child.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) I doubt it. Why are the parents responsible? The only way you could get at the parents is if they told him to drive the car for their benefit (e.g., go to the store and get me some groceries, thus becoming their agent) or they knew he had a large history of problems with driving vehicles (negligent entrustment). That's an easy case to get dismissed without more facts. The only theory i can think of would be if they knew he had driven drunk before. He's a minor. Don't some states have parental liability laws? eta: this looks like a decent summary of these types of laws in all 50 states: http://www.mwl-law.com/wp-content/uploads/...l-50-states.pdf Makes sense, given that a 16 year old isn't actually going to have any assets to go after. Plus the defense was that the parents literally were responsible for spoiling him and causing him to grow up without an understanding of consequences.

I see no reason at all to think this woman is making up anything in that article. There's not any outlandish or fantastical claims. I just read this buzzfeed piece on what's called "microaggressions" (awkward academic-speak word) and some of the examples are pretty similar to what she describes. http://www.buzzfeed.com/hnigatu/racial-mic...n-a-daily-basis specifically, this one (I assume she's either adopted or biracial): I have an adopted uncle, but you wouldn't know it looking at him.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 07:07 AM) He still spends two years from age 16-18 more or less in isolation in this treatment facility, where he won't be able to drink, drive, or see any of his friends. Plus, his parents are out nearly a million bucks, when it really does seem like they are root of the problem. Plus, he's still on probation until he's 26 so he has to be very careful afterwards or he's going to get a prison term anyway. I'm not sure I buy their rationale as a legal defense, but the sentence isn't as light as it sounds. Yeah, I'm having a hard time figuring out where I stand on this one. eta: okay read a little bit more, he literally got off light because he's a rich kid. wtf.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 05:02 PM) Not win you're in the middle of a playoff race. And not when your offense has been playing pretty well. If he plays, he better have a short ass leash. This team isn't going anywhere even if they make the playoffs. Unless you've already decided to cut ties with Cutler and rely on a journeyman QB playing out of his mind, you need to get as much as you can out of Cutler to make your evaluation.
-
You have a very important decision to make regarding Cutler and next year. Wouldn't it make sense to play your (as of now) franchise QB when he's healthy to help you make that decision?
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) And there's no way in hell I'd ever consider giving Cutler that kind of money. Marshall is a definite possibility. Yeah not on board with Cutler getting an average of $20M a year.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) Because you still have to be accurate and you can shoot something 400+ yards out. Real Men use giant blow guns with poison-tipped darts! http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/human-pl...h-blowpipes.htm

ha! I'll ask my wife if she has anything like this. She uses books or stories to teach vocab, i.e. finding words within the stories the kids are going to be reading so they can learn to use context clues and that sort of stuff. I know she was just finishing up a pretty cool video project with The Giver (unrelated to vocab). Let me know if you're interested in some more info on that one.

he put that throw in the perfect spot, but look at how much effort he had to put into a 35-40 yard loft. He had another great throw a few weeks ago to Alshon in the end zone when he was being pull down. Wish I could remember which game that was from.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:46 PM) Interestingly Im not sure all of those teams are happy about how much they paying those QBs this year. File under things that may you go hmmmmmmm. But nobody's going to be beating down McCown's door with starting QB offers.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:15 PM) That's your argument! "Look guys, he had two dropped interceptions last night. I'm ignoring all of the good throws he made and pointing to two out of 70 to show you that he's not as smart as you think." Come on. And the TD:INT ration isn't the be all end all statistic, but it's an important one. And you know what it's better than? The 13 to 8 ratio that Cutler has (and he's had some dropped int's too! Totally not smart with the ball!) No, it isn't. You're just being silly now. eta: you could very well be right about McCown being much smarter than Cutler, but let's see some evidence beyond TD:INT and "don't you watch the games?!" I realize that what I'm asking for would be a lengthy piece for a professional sports writer and would take a ton of effort to produce, though.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:09 PM) The deep ball is not essential to the system. At all. The Bears have scored on more long, sustained drives than at any time I can remember. That's the west coast system. Yes, they occasionally throw it deep, its not frequent enough to need a QB with an arm like that. It is, again, not just about throwing it vertically down the field, which, again, really is important as a threat for any system. There are throws that are shorter vertically but still need to get across the field in a hurry. Cutler, with his significantly stronger arm, can make throws that McCown can't. Yes, I watch the games, but no, I don't agree with your subjective and ill-defined argument that the "ball moves around much better," and I don't really see the evidence that McCown is reading progressions whereas Cutler wasn't. That's not the only time a play is audibled or the QB has an option. Short of a formation change, we don't really know what was called and what was audibled. He is just some nobody who's gotten lucky, or he's the first person ever to go from so-bad-he's-out-of-the-league to top-10 QB in a year. Yes, he's playing very well. Nobody disputes that. But it's taking a huge, huge risk to assume he'll keep playing this well for another full season.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:06 PM) Look you are a Cutler apologist, I get it. Cutler wasnt injured to start the Redskins game, he just sucked. He wasnt injured against the Vikings, McCown just had better stats. I didn't say he was injured against the Redskins. I said he left that game pretty early thanks to injury. I come from a world where it's useless to look at 1qtr+ of play and compare it against 2+qtr of play and think you get anything meaningful out of it. Oh, so there's absolutely no hope in plugging in a 35 year old journeyman QB who was pretty horrible until this one seven game stretch? It's pretty much a lock that McCown will put up a 90+QB rating next year and we won't be wasting the first good set of offensive talent in decades?
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) And thats silly if you can use that money to fix other positions. What are the great defensive FA's this year? I honestly don't know who's up. Regardless of needs, it's wrong to think that if someone is going to cost five times as much, you should get five times as much production. That's not how marginal utility works.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) Come on now, we are seeing it happen with McCown right now. That's a pretty great self-refuting argument lol
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:00 PM) You mean the stats I showed against the Redskins and Lions? Two games Cutler left because of injuries? One of which he was clearly injured the entire time? Yeah, that's a pretty horrible comparison. Yep McCown played better against the Vikings. And if we're going to keep talking about his (half) season numbers, we need to keep in mind that he's been putting them up against garbage defenses.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:55 AM) I have no idea what you're arguing anymore. You're pointing to bad throws by QB's as some kind of sign that they're not smart. Ok? Peyton Manning has some dropped interceptions too. NOT A HALL OF FAMER. I understand that you're not following the argument, but it's not that complicated. If we want to talk about QBs making good decisions, you can't look only at the number of INTs they have. It misses all of the times that they made really poor decisions but were lucky with them. Nobody has said anything close to what you're trying to parody here. Many, including you, are arguing that he can keep up pretty phenomenal and completely unprecedented (for him) pace. That's not the argument because that's not how football/economics works e.g. you might have to pay twice as much to get 10% better production.
-
I haven't seen any of the McCown boosters address the cupcake defense thing yet.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:47 AM) Um, this one? Good point! Deep passes are never considered a threat with Trestman. Wait.... Oh, so deep passes are important? Whoops. McCown has had a couple of deep passes. He is nowhere near the deep threat that Cutler is. And it's not just depth, but longer throws across the field or harder throws to get into tighter windows. Cutler can make those throws while McCown can't. He left earlier in the game. No, he wasn't playing well and yes McCown stepped in and did. How is McCown "in more control of the offense"? What does that mean? What is the evidence that he's calling better audibles? How do you know when he's calling audibles?
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:44 AM) Its not a blank check, its a set amount of money. And yes, I would pay a franchise QB to play in this system, 100% of the time. Remember when NE let Brady go after Cassel had that good season and proved it was really just the system and the QB didn't matter?
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:37 AM) Did you miss the 13 to 1 TD:INT ratio? You're unnecessarily pooh poohing a guy away who has had one of the best stretches as a Bears QB EVER, in the history of the franchise. Thanks for bringing up the stat, which is exactly the point. That TD:INT ratio doesn't tell the whole story about whether a player is making smart decisions with the ball. If McCown throws it right to the DB 50 times but they always drop it, wouldn't it be pretty silly to talk about how he always makes great decisions? Actually, he had the longest gap between red zone interceptions until earlier this year with that tipped ball. He hadn't thrown one since 2010. Nobody is arguing that Cutler doesn't make dumb decisions, though. Just that how "smart" McCown is is overstated by seven games worth of TD:INT.
