  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 6, 2013 -> 09:35 AM) And after reading the Wiki page on this, how on earth do you make up stories to implicate your friends? The whole thing seems really strange to me. They weren't really 'friends.' There was a large group (25-30) of kids who more-or-less randomly assembled in Central Park, harassed some other bikers and joggers, and then split up when the police showed up. Some of them knew each other from being in the same neighborhood, but they didn't even know all of the others' names. Police fed them this information. These five were picked up over the harassment stuff. Right before they were about to be released, the rape victim was discovered. Police thought they had the person or persons responsible in the group, so they held them for further interrogation. It wasn't an unreasonable thing for them to do, but they pressed right on even after it became clear that these kids had no idea what had happened, where it had happened or how it happened. They crafted their own story and fed it to the kids one-by-one, all the while telling them "hey, the other guys are all blaming you! why don't you tell use what they did and you can be a witness and go home soon?" Classic good-cop/bad-cop interrogations.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 6, 2013 -> 09:31 AM) How on earth do you confess to touching someone's clothing when you never touched their clothing? That makes no sense to me. You do it when you've been interrogated aggressively without break for 30+ hours. These kids "confessed" to all sorts of things, many of which were contradictory and didn't match what actually happened. They confessed to helping in the rape, to fondling her, to hitting her, yet they didn't do any of that at all. False confessions can and do happen, even when it's a grown adult and not a 14 year old kid who just wants to go home. Part of it is that the police can openly lie to a suspect about what others have said and what the consequences of a confession would be ("we're just going to use you as a witness, tell us what we want to hear and you can go home!")
  3. blasphemy edit: the companion wheel was an awesome innovation
  4. Even at the end of the main campaign, Deathclaws are still ridiculously tough. I didn't pick up NV until a few years after it was released, so I never had to deal with the inevitable Bethesda launch bugs.
  5. QUOTE (TRU @ May 3, 2013 -> 05:55 PM) Got real stale for me However, I just bought Fallout 3 again for like the 4th time last week and its still awesome.. I remember I didnt care for it when I got it when it originally came out but I also had never played a Fallout game before and didnt know what how to play.. FO3 was a good game, but New Vegas was much better if you haven't checked that one out yet.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 3, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) There isn't a person around who thinks the Bulls even with Rose 100%, has any chance vs. Miami. I am of the belief if he comes back next year at 100%, all of this will be forgotten. Mostly, sure, but it'll always be there as a part of his legacy. edit: unless he gets a ring in Chicago
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2013 -> 12:58 PM) I still don't get the difference in coverage here. How does Cutler get crucified in the media, while Rose gets fellatio from guys like Wilbon? Because Cutler has a Jerkface and is kind of a dick
  8. Burns was just on Colbert a week or two ago promoting it (first I had heard of it), and it just came to PBS on April 16th.
  9. Good topic to drop a link to the Innocence Project
  10. http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/centralparkfive/ Some background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Park_Jogger_case Seeing the whole story of how it unfolded, how weak the case against them was, how the police openly lied on the stand, how the whole media and city condemned these kids and called for their death from the start was pretty despairing. The worst part is that the city is still fighting this case. The two main things I took away were the psychological conditions at play in the false confessions (and mirrored by the one hold-out juror) and the fact that you should NEVER, EVER TALK TO THE POLICE. Lawyer-up and don't say a damn word until then.
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 3, 2013 -> 08:14 AM) I graduated almost 10 years ago (whoa), and I definitely never read a single drop of fiction in college. Aside from the Greek and Roman mythology elective I took, I don't think I did either (for school).
  12. Read elsewhere that it came from a British MP, that if you listen around the ~1:40 mark you can hear him saying "oh f***" or something like that, and that he's likely to get in trouble for posting it to youtube.
  13. I couldn't turn up much for analysis, but I did see that other countries have been doing it for awhile including South Africa and the UK.
  14. I like B&B more than any other chicago sports media, but I don't really care to hear Bernstein get into religious arguments for hours on end.
  15. Quick thought: what happens to you if your electricity provider's payment website is down and you need to pay to turn your power back on?
  16. I was curious so I googled trying to find some articles on this. Hard, most results were for various companies' plans, but I did find this: http://www.governing.com/blogs/view/Rise-o...-Scrutiny-.html
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:06 PM) He's made great points this whole time. Too many people believing the Bible and that homosexuality is a sin, but don't want to be labeled as a bigot or intolerant. It's ridiculous. And those are the people he's turning off, for calling out. yeah but it's a sports talk show
  18. Mine's not integrated with a smartphone/internet or anything, but the first thing I bought for my house was a programmable thermostat.
  19. Not in our area yet. Some funny hysterics in Naperville over them, though.
  20. Do they compare it to people who pay traditionally but can monitor their usage in the same way and get a "running bill" amount? I'd use that for sure.
  21. Lower-income people might not have regular internet access, cellphones or smartphones (to reactivate if it goes out). Like I said I don't see anything wrong or malicious about it. It's not an option I'd take but maybe it is advantageous for some.
  22. Yeah, better-said. They're not being delayed but being discarded in pursuit of something else.
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 2, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) Yeah, if you have bad credit or a history of not paying your bill... I think in the southwest and the south, where there is a lot of menial labor and a cash economy, as well as big swings in utility bills because of the oppressive summer heat and the mild winter temps, some lower income folks struggle with it. I know gas companies allow customers around Chicago to spread out costs over the year instead of having huge bills in the winter and low bills in the summer. Do the electric companies not offer those types of plans?
