  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 02:14 PM) Open source I think is a horrible idea. Why not just put a sign up that says "please hack us"? Better to have the source code reviewed by a nonpartisan agency for all new versions that come out? No print-outs, just software analysts looking for problems and testing, then turning the machines back over. That also gives you the benefit of being able to check for software changes (via object compares) on machines in actual use later. Open-source is arguably more beneficial from a security standpoint. Any system, be it physical or cyber, has countless vulnerabilities both known and unknown. Getting those systems poked and proded in the public realm can bring many of those vulnerabilities to light. And, as with any aspect of cybersecurity, step one is physical security--without access to the physical voting machines, all of that "hacking" is useless. http://jps.anl.gov/Volume3/Paper1_Loughlin.pdf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_software_security
  2. Another Black Panther siting at the polls:
  3. The ballot machine software should be 100% open-source and publicly financed.
  4. America's voting system is a disgrace
  5. George Will on the dangers of voter-registration-by-mail!
  6. Really only posting this because I found this statistic pretty surprising:
  7. Isn't Obama's rally at McCormick? edit: the office my wife used to work in overlooked O'Hare. She could always tell when Obama was coming in because the place shut down.
  8. I went to the wrong place to vote! There's three middle/elementary schools within 4 blocks of my house and I mixed them up. Other than that, no problems and no lines at either.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) Lol: (from Fox News) I wonder how that works with electioneering laws?
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:25 AM) http://washingtonexaminer.com/philly-gop-p...14#.UJk57W_A-b6 Well that's awesome. A Penn. judge has issued an order to allow the monitors in: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/11/06...tion-officials/ lol, still drumming up the New Black Panthers stuff.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:45 AM) Lol, that's great. (you know that's fake right?) I didn't until just a second ago! But that post was 100% non-serious. edit: except for making fun of Tebow, that's always serious.
  12. first google search result indicates it's a parody account
  13. I hope this image can change the mind anyone who considered voting for Romney
  14. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:37 AM) That math doesnt even make sense, unless Ohio is overwhelmingly Democrat. It was an error. They posted place-holder data. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20121106/CINCI/121106009/
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) Id rather not get rid of 11/11 seeing as that is a world holiday. There really is no reason that election day cant just be a holiday on its own. When did it switch from Armistice Day?
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) It would be nice, but I am not convinced it would really matter. Indiana had over 200 hours of early voting spread over a month+. Some states still do not have any early voting, or they restrict early voting on certain days for arbitrary and partisan reasons e.g. Ohio not having early voting this past Sunday.
  17. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) Overall, early vote turnout OH up 2.44% in state. Down -4.1% in Obama/Kerry counties; up 14.39% in Bush/McCain counties. — Josh Kraushaar (@HotlineJosh) November 6, 2012 Gannett issued a retraction and an apology, I think? I'm not 100% clear reading this post but I think the data was place-holder data and not real: http://hotair.com/archives/2012/11/06/romn...h-early-voting/
  18. LOL, "Black Panthers" already making a return. Awesome.
  19. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:24 AM) Chrysler gave its entire work force the day off to vote today. That's absolutely a middle finger to Romney. It should be a national holiday anyway
  20. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 09:58 AM) There has to be a viable 3rd party first. This obviously a leftist slant, but it makes the case for why voting is important, even if you don't like the top of the ticket:
  21. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:09 AM) I believe it's much more than that. Well that's the stated goal. It's a big confusing mess, and we should never amend our Constitution with big confusing messes.
  22. Amendment: Labor unions are worried that the language is confusing and imprecise enough that it'll allow back-door reductions in their guaranteed pensions, as Y2HH says.
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 10:05 AM) So what's the deal with Amendment 49 in Illinois? It's written so incoherently, I believe they are trying to trick the voters. On first read, it sounds like it can help limit lawmakers' ability to increase their pensions. But after doing some research, apparently it makes it easier, eliminating current restrictions. It's kind of tough to determine what is actually going on with it. Amendment 49 makes it so that any increase in pension benefits requires a 3/5's vote from the legislature instead of the typical 50%+1. Public-sector labor unions are primarily the target. I'll be voting no. We shouldn't be amending our state constitution to make one particular political preference a huge hurdle to overcome. edit: It doesn't actually address the current pension mess at all.
  24. Well our system is dumb in that partisans control the entire electoral process. But not-voting isn't going to change that, and third parties aren't going to be built without actual electoral successes.
  25. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 09:55 AM) Simply put, they hate the message so they try to kill the messanger. We'll finally find out tonight if the stats guys were right. My bet is that they will be. For all it's worth, professor Wang predicted the exact EV count in 2004 so that alone proves he isn't biased, he calls it as he sees it. It's mainly the "gut-feeling" pundit class that is pushing back against the onslaught of stats. It's no different than the reaction of people like Joe Morgan to sabermetrics. If numbers and process can quantify it and remove the fog, then they can't talk about their horserace crap for the 12 months prior to the election.
