They'll get around to figuring out this one as soon as they figure out the "flash crash" from a couple of years ago.

Ain't modern finance capitalism grand?

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 08:13 AM) Other than the fact that it specifically condemns homosexual acts and the god of the Israelites demands that gays be executed? Yeah and I should be killed for my poly-cotton blend, too, but you don't see anyone bothering to follow that rule.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 08:12 AM) There is a difference between a point of debate and saying the bible is written by a bunch of assholes. People are entitled to opinion and of course different views. People are entitled to say that the Bible is written by a bunch of assholes if they want, too. But, like the CFA owner, they are not entitled to be shielded from criticism for expressing those views.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 07:55 AM) He has the right to run his own business... Unless he wants to serve supersize cokes. Then f*** him!

Well they probably don't just say "he is evil" because that isn't a particularly meaningful statement.

The "Obama did it too!" defense is pretty silly. I mean, can people recognize zero difference between Obama's stance 6 months ago and what Focus on the Family stands for?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 05:02 PM) Oh come on now, donating money to a group and telling your employees to keep the queers out of the store are two entirely different things. GMAB. Edit: and what as the CEO done to "actively promote" discrimination? Stating he doesn't like gay marriage? I never said they were the same thing? The owner has actively donated millions of dollars to anti-gay groups such as Focus on the Family. That is different from merely making a statement.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 04:57 PM) Still distinct from promoting discrimination or discriminatory policies. ?? The owner actively promotes discrimination and donates to groups explicitly for that reason.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 04:38 PM) Actions separate and apart from their business operations and how they treat their customers. That is an important distinction as well. Their business operations fund those activities. If it was just the CEO saying something I disagreed with, that'd be different.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 03:20 PM) The line at the Chik-Fil-A across the street from me was huge. I got there before the line was too big. Meal was delicious and I was served by the owner of the establishment (you know, someone who has invested money in the business and has a lot of money and his livelihood at stake). I'm certainly not boycotting a franchise owned store for something the CEO said (and was perfectly entitled to say). Additionally, he hasn't done anything to treat his employees poorly or to discriminate against them. Note: My coworkers wanted to go, the fact that it happened to be on national chick-fil-a day was pretty much oblivious to all of us (until I logged onto facebook afterwards). It's not over what someone said, it's over their actions and who they financially support. That is an important distinction.

2012 Summer Olympics Thread

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 05:06 PM) You should add the rule to the thread title so people know the rule without reading through the thread. I honestly checked through several pages and didn't see it. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:23 AM) If someone said back in March, that this team would be in 1st and 2.5 games ahead of DET, and in a good WC position, on August 1st... what kind of responses would they have gotten? I'd be asking when the memorial services for the Detriot Tigers' plane crash were.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 06:47 AM) Like the WAPO parroting a Huffpo hit from some investor who told Harry Reid that Romney hasn't paid taxes in 10 years. That is real news. It's not. The media is terrible at doing actual journalism. However that plays right into Obama controlling the narrative and Romney bumbling along, unable to come up with any sort of coherent response or counterattack.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) Bulls***, Rmoney (or whoever has an ® behind their name) would be defined negatively and the Obama campaign is in control of the narrative no matter what because the media is so f***ing in the tank for RockStarObama it does't matter. Oh... nevermind, they are just reporting "news". GMAFB. nah.

I don't see a "no spoilers" rules list on the first couple of pages? -
2012 Summer Olympics Thread

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 03:32 PM) Sure it's a courtesy, but if you are that concerned with watching it tonight to find out the results, you avoid ALL media and internet sites that you don't need for work, especially a thread about the Olympics. -
The specific story doesn't matter, but being in control of the narrative does.

2012 Summer Olympics Thread

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 09:11 PM) That's fine, but when you're not going to show May-Walsh at 5 p.m. and then when you do show them in primetime you show 1/4 of the match that's not cool. They showed Gibbs/Rosenthal live at 3 and you got to see the whole match. How does that make sense? Save the more popular thing for primetime only to show less of it? Then they can turn it into a sports soap opera instead of a live sporting event. -

Sounds like a class operation they've got going there. -
It's only important in that it was another couple of news cycles focusing on Romney's gaffes and not on Obama and the economy. Romney keeps letting himself be defined negatively and the Obama campaign is really in control of the narrative at this point.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 08:36 AM) I make it a policy never to talk to agenda people who approach me in a public setting like that. Religion, Environment, Politics... doesn't matter. Especially the LaRouchies, though usually I just insult them. They're at 75th & Lemont in Darien/Downers/Woodridge/whatever the city is at that corner pretty frequently. I don't see anyone ever taking their pamphlets. Maybe it has something to do with the Obama-as-Hitler sandwich boards. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 08:16 AM) A bank? Fine, you win, you got approached with the biggest scam. Jewels have TCF "branches" in some of their stores with an ATM and a couple of tellers. They're a terrible bank but I don't think it was a scam. -

I've never been approached at the grocery store aside from by a tcf rep at jewel.
