  1. CORRECTION: THE SUPREME COURT BACKS ALL PARTS OF OBAMA'S SIGNATURE HEALTH CARE LAW they will not live that down soon.
  2. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) So it's unconstitutional to require people to purchase health insurance, but it's constitutional to levy a tax on people who choose to not do so? Right, it's a tax incentive. However: Amy Howe: The court reinforces that individuals can simply refuse to pay the tax and not comply with the mandate. That's what the whole Medicaid challenge was about, more or less. Not speed limits, but other restrictions tied to the funding.
  3. Amy Howe: The money quote from the section on the mandate: Our precedent demonstrates that Congress had the power to impose the exaction in Section 5000A under the taxing power, and that Section 5000A need not be read to do more than impose a tax. This is sufficient to sustain it.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 09:14 AM) Wait, so all those times I said it was a tax...I wound up right?!?!?!? I'm almost more excited about that. The Chief Justice agreed with me! I remember both of us arguing against that, which is also what people challenging Randy Barnett's legal objections have said all along. A rose by any other name...
  5. REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER! REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!
  6. Tom: The bottom line: the entire ACA is upheld, with the exception that the federal government's power to terminate states' Medicaid funds is narrowly read
  7. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 09:11 AM) CNN just reported the mandate was unconstitutional lol@CNN
  8. Medicare provision is limited but not invalidated. States were suing over new Medicare expansion that is part of ACA as undue coercion because there's a bunch of rules states have to follow.
  9. Mandate is found to be a tax, which is a power of Congress Roberts joins the liberals of the Court.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 08:43 AM) It's actually good business to do so...people aged 23-26 don't get sick all that often. It's not extra revenue if you've got a family plan and already have a younger kid on it, though.
  11. Interesting note from the SCOTUSblog coverage: To answer another question, the provision requiring insurers to let young adults stay on their parents' insurance could get struck down if the mandate is invalidated and the Court decides that that the rest of the law (or some part of it) must go too. But some major insurers have announced that they will continue to allow the young adults to stay on even if the law is invalidated.
  12. I'm following it here: http://www.scotusblog.com/cover-it-live/
  13. My prediction: 5-4 mandate struck down, instructions to congress to figure out how to save or toss out guaranteed coverage and community ratings.
  14. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 05:15 PM) StrangeSox is to Ohman as to what Greg is to Ozzie. I wish i had the energy to expend on a years-long Ohman troll.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 05:58 PM) He had cool entrance music, so at least there was that to look forward to when you were at the game and he was coming in. Thanks for getting into the spirit of the thread, Dick Allen!
  16. The guy's seat on the bench isn't even cold yet and already people are speculating on who's going to replace him.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) House Oversight Committee votes to hold Holder in contempt If anyone's curious, Fortune has a lengthy article detailing the history of Fast and Furious. http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012...-furious-truth/
  18. Whoa come on, no need for negative talk here. The Sox just lost a great player. He battled his ERA down from 15+ all the way to a little below 6, show some love!
  19. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 03:47 PM) I was about to start this. Bastard I win! QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 03:47 PM) Banned ...or lose
  20. Post all of your fond memories of this great White Sox pitcher here!
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 03:13 PM) Thank you for the technical definition of summer. I had no idea. We typically don't have record-setting streaks of consecutive 100+ days in June.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) Yeah, despite the heat this year, the humidity has been pretty non-existent. If it hadn't been so dry, this hasn't been a bad summer so far. Also we are in a burn and fireworks ban. It's amazing how different 105F in California's central valley region (incredibly dry right now) feels from 95 around Chicago this week. We can only expect things to keep on getting hotter over the years: edit: this site will tell you current drought conditions across the country: http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/ edit2: Jesus, I didn't realize that Denver is looking at a record-setting fifth day of 100+ temperatures. And we're only in June.
  23. finally some offense against scrub pitchers
