QUOTE (flavum @ May 26, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) Pirates have to go 50-62 to finish 81-81. I hope they blow that out of the water. Yeah, I had no idea they were playing so well...good for the Bucos... So I just watched the handsome Neal Cotts retire all four batters he faced for the Rangers...looking pretty sharp, looking pretty sharp...we could use him right now.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 26, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) Reed third in the league in saves, but has saved all but 7 of our wins. Yeah, with our offense, he might end up saving 60 games this year.

Detroit continues pulling horseshoes out of their asses -
QUOTE (chw42 @ May 25, 2013 -> 07:58 AM) Didn't Hernandez purposefully blow a home run call just to prove that he doesn't like replay (or something along those lines)? That alone should get him suspended. Hawk is right though, Hernandez constantly blows calls. Like some of the others have mentioned, Hawk probably is correct...but that doesn't mean he needs to be saying these things on the air...Bud is not going to appreciate that.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 24, 2013 -> 09:26 PM) So does Hawk get blowback for this outburst towards an ump? I think so, considering he is sort of on "probation" for doing this several times now. He said a few times "How long is it going to take?" Meaning either when will Angel Hernandez get fined or suspended, or perhaps even demoted, I assume...He then went on to mention just how commonplace it is for Angel to miss a call, including the "Just flip a coin, Angel" about 4 times... Those are pretty incendiary comments.

QUOTE (farmteam @ May 24, 2013 -> 04:41 PM) Ah. Well, I guess my point then (which I think is what you're saying here; correct me if I'm wrong) is that if the prosecution presents the case in a way that assumptions are required for me to reach either conclusion (conviction or non-conviction), then I will make those assumptions for a non-conviction, but not for a conviction. As a juror, I would feel that that would be the best way for me to live up to "innocent until proven guilty" and all that jazz. Admittedly, I've never actually served on a real jury. Yeah, I think that's correct. So what the defense is trying to do in this case is trying to call question (or even cause the jury to make some assumptions) into Martin's character enough to just add one more doubt as to whether Zimmerman actually could have murdered him. I agree with you; I think it is fair to make those assumptions if you're voting not guilty, because if those assumptions are there to be made, then that is usually a pretty good indicator that the prosecution has not proven their case.

Oh these are the nights where there is simply nothing else like the Hawkeroo...reminds me of the mid-80's Cubs broadcasts when Harry was drunk...s***, it's even the same damned color guy...Steve should be able to write a book one day...instead of Tuesday's with Morrie, it can be Afternoons with Harry, Evenings with the Hawkeroo

We have an oral agreement. Just waiting on the addendum to the contract to be signed. House came in $85k less than contracted price (appraised at $375k). Paid $25k above appraisal to get the deal done. Phew...

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) I think this is true, but I think we should strive to recognize these sorts of judgements and biases in ourselves in order to overcome them. Zimmerman made a quick judgement based on (poor) assumptions that a young black male in his neighborhood was likely a criminal. Do we really need to overcome them though? A lot of these judgments are biologically evolved and necessary judgments. I see nothing wrong in seeing someone as potentially violent because the way they might be walking, or the way they may be dressing, or the things they may be saying. Now that doesn't mean I should be convicting that person of a crime, or make a moral judgment about them, but I don't see that as doing anything wrong. And to farmteam's point, the question is not what assumptions am I making in order to convict, the question is what assumptions am I making to NOT convict. And in the absence of much other evidence, these assumptions or judgments make it more likely that I vote NOT to convict a guy, because these assumptions or judgments, coupled with the lack of evidence make it even more difficult to convict.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:30 AM) I hadn't thought of it like that, but I think you're on to something with the psychology of candy=young, innocent. But he literally was just a kid eating candy on his way home, minding his own business and doing nothing wrong. It could have been a McDonald's cheeseburger or a million other innocent things instead. If the case hinges entirely on the jury's belief of who initiated the physical confrontation, then yes, I can see how some of the bravado stuff is relevant. But the pot-smoking? Flipping the bird? It really shouldn't be, at all. Martin isn't more or less deserving of the protection of the law because he smoked pot. I agree...none of those things mean he should be allowed to be murdered walking down the street. But if I am on the jury, and you're asking me to decide whether I think Zimmerman acted in self-defense or killed this kid intentionally, and not many of the facts are known, I'd be making a lot of assumptions based on what I could piece together about the character of the two participants. Let's face it, everyone makes these sort of judgments every day. You're not going to suddenly stop when called upon to actually determine whether someone is guilty of murder or not.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:21 AM) Whether or not the racial stereotyping was justified is one thing, but it remains a fact incredibly likely that he did racially stereotype (or profile) Martin and that Martin was an innocent black kid wearing a hoodie and eating Skittles. At best, Zimmerman committed a series of lapses in judgement that led to an innocent kid being shot to death. See, this skittles thing is why the defense is emphasizing the marijuana and gun pictures on his phone. You're trying to emphasize his youth with the skittles and they are just saying "wait a minute here, he wasn't just a little boy eating candy on his way home." I think it's perfectly fair.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 24, 2013 -> 11:00 AM) Yeah but he objectively was racially stereotyping an innocent black kid wearing a hoodie and eating skittles. None of these pictures change that. No they don't, but racially stereotyping isn't murder, either.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:52 AM) That's what they're hoping for, but it would be an easier case to sell to the judge if the suspensions were due to fighting or more aggressive behavior. I don't think being a burglar/pot smoker means you're more likely to attack someone. All that stuff i'm guessing will be barred unless the prosecution brings it up. The fact that he's got a picture of a handgun on his phone and he's giving the finger in another I think goes to the fact that maybe he doesn't shy away from violence or instigating violence. I'm not saying that should get Zimmerman off alone, but like Pettie said, the fact that we really have no way of knowing what actually happened, I think it clouds the issue just a bit more.
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:49 AM) If white people are the naive, I really feel sorry for them. There are so many different ways this scenario can go down it's not even funny. If Zimmerman got his ass kicked and then shot Trayvon after the fact, that's obvious. If Zimmerman chased him down and Trayvon got testy and a skirmish broke out then we have a situation. If Zimmerman was ambushed, got his ass beat, and then fired in self defense, then this should be an open and shut case. My question is, how do you prove any of it with 50% of the witnesses dead? This case is like a wirey, tanglely, thicket of bush. Well, some white people certainly are that naive. Especially older white people who have secluded themselves from urban areas for much of the last few decades. And I agree with you about the rest.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:41 AM) Oh no! He smoked pot! He tried to look 'tough'! Martin was just another black kid. Like a lot of kids in general, the "normal, good ol' American boys", he used some mild drugs, had some bravado, and got into some minor trouble here and there. Who cares? That's how teenagers in general act because they're dumb. None of this has any relevance to this shooting. Even if Martin had a criminal past, Zimmerman wouldn't automatically be innocent. No, but it will go a long way in convincing straight-laced white people that Martin may have been more willing to initiate or escalate the situation...i dunno what the composition of the jury is though...

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 24, 2013 -> 08:22 AM) This is totally like Spurrier to the NFL. There will be some games where it works perfectly, but there will be other games where Vick/Foles/Barkley throw for 60 yards on 17 completions. I'd be extremely surprised if he makes it 3 full years. People don't even talk about the other college coach who IS going to have success in the NFL. Doug MARRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE I guess it just depends on whether you believe in the coach's ability to continue to innovate, or if you think the coach just found a system that worked in college and will refuse to adapt. I'd like to think Kelly can use the same ability to innovate in the NFL and find things that do work, rather than trying to force the system he used in college to work in the NFL.

I don't know jack s*** about hockey but it seems as though we just can't set up any quick passes for clean shots near the goal or any one-timers...we're just throwing everything right at the net as soon as we can get a clean shot...and without screening Howard, it's just easy pickings for him....of course, we've hit post like 8 times in the last three games and nothing has gotten behind him, meanwhile Detroit hits the post once tonight and it goes right in...
