  1. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 10, 2013 -> 11:44 AM) Guys... there is talking about it... ...and there is talking about it like it happened two months ago. The first one is ok... that's what sports fans do. The second one is pretty pathetic and embarrassing. More than anything, that is a pretty painful reminder that the team hasn't done s*** in almost 30 years. Yeah, I agree...but can you see the clear demarcation between those that lived through that time and followed that team and those that were too young to remember or were yet to be born? That team literally was a sports phenomenon...of any sports teams of the last 30 years in major American Professional Sport, that is probably in your top 5 for dominance of their peers, historical dominance, colorful/interesting characters, and cultural relevance. Add to that the coach, the fact that it took place in a major market, and the fact that it was the League's charter franchise, and there you have it. Yes, we need to stop comparing every Bears team to the '85 team...but expecting people to forget about that year because it was 28 seasons ago or whatever...not going to happen.
  2. QUOTE (Boogua @ Apr 10, 2013 -> 11:06 AM) People won't ever stop talking about the 85 Bears. It's one of the best teams ever. I'm a 25 years old Bears fan and I still have conversations about the Steel Curtain Steelers. Some things will last forever. Agreed...this isn't just a local phenomenon...they get brought up nationally almost as often, and will continue to until there is a more dominant, fun, colorful and talented cast of characters on one NFL team.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 10, 2013 -> 09:17 AM) It's kind of interesting to me as I get older. When I was young, 30 years prior seemed crazy long. That would have been mid-60s, but it was still like 50% of the references people made. Now I think of simpsons episodes and realize they are like 24 years old at this point and it seems like only a few. So I get it now, 2005 doesn't seem like that long ago (honestly 2007 seems longer to me than 2005), but man. At some point people need to get over the 85 bears because it seems to make our terrible success since that time easier to take. Were you alive in 1985? If so, how old were you?
  4. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Apr 10, 2013 -> 10:47 AM) Anybody on here cycle? I'm looking to pick up a road bike and add cycling as low impact cross training to running. There's a bike shop near my house I'm going to check out tonight. Any thoughts? I bought a Trek road bike online about 5 years ago...most likely, you won't use it as much as you think you will, and you don't need all the tech they'll tell you you'll need...

I have so much in my dvr to catch up on...
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 05:50 PM) Right. Both a buyers and sellers agent use them to justify their pricing. In this case, this guy is f***ing crazy. The are the highest priced place anywhere near them and its beat to hell including puddles in the basement, I would have to drop in upwards of 100k to make it one of the nicer ones around. One of their comps was a place in the best part of the west loop, almost new, larger, and completely upgraded with everything from fixtures to heated floors in every bathroom. His place has been on the market for 170+ days and will still be there another 170 at his price. There is a home like that that we looked at and made a bid on as well...some people are just unrealistic... Any other places you like?
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) The offer I put out was countered and they are completely crazy with what they think its worth. Their Comps are completely new larger places while their's is a run down fixer upper. Ugh. Gotta love that...they did counter though, which shows they at least are taking you seriously (even if they are nuts)...think you are going to re-counter?
  9. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) It's a ball, but that call barely gets attention if Pierzynski receives it correctly. Pierzynski absolutely turned that into a ball and made it look awful. Perception is reality, and catchers can help or hurt themselves when receiving pitches. Pierzynski gave up on it, which is enough to make it a ball. Even had that caught the zone, you still should ball it. It's shocking that Pierzynski would give up on a curve ball that could possibly end the game and didn't miss by THAT much. I don't know how much he gave up on it as he just received it poorly...he had a tendency to do the same when he was behind the plate for us...for whatever reason he seems to backhand that ball for whatever reason and I felt that we lost some calls last year because of that... Also, watch Nathan...he gave up on it too...his reaction is the best part of the entire video, IMO...
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) That's all the rage when you're in your teens and maybe in college. Sad is when you're like my buddy and still think it's cool to have those s***ty dvds and still think people think you're cool when you suggest throwing on Big Lebowski or Mallrats. However, I do enjoy throwing on Spy Game every once in awhile...still one of the coolest movies of the last 20 years, IMHO...
  11. Throwing my house on the market for an open house this weekend...see if we draw some quick offers...should be interesting.
  12. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 11:21 AM) This was interesting to read again. Looking back at the history of KW trades will always be an intriguing thing. The one thing I hope Hahn learned from some of those poor trades (Hudson for Jackson, Gio for Swisher) is to put a premium on talented young arms. They did it right by locking up Sale long term. I hope another young pitcher comes out of nowhere this year.... I still believe Quintana has the potential to be really good! I'm still not sure you can look at things this way...as Wite was making pretty clear...just take the case of another pitcher in the Swisher deal, Fautino De Los Santos...I'm not sure many people were more upset about the trade of Gios than DLS...and look how he turned out for the A's... This is pretty much just a numbers game...if you trade away a certain quantity of young arms, some small percentage is going to come back and bite you in the ass...that is all there is to it....however, the overwhelming majority will not...
  13. I had already posted exactly what Wite did, just a few posts before...
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 10:31 AM) Yep, originally, the studios didn't think there was a big market for "buyers", but there was for "renters", so they made these deals with the chains that after a movie was released on VHS, it would be available to purchase for like 80$+, OR you could rent it for cheap, and the studio would share in the revenue. Blockbuster (and others) figured the same thing would happen with DVD as what happened with Laserdisc, meaning they never thought it would take off like it did, so they didn't think making such a deal was necessary. After the offer was turned down, WB was forced to go retail with DVD, and it took off like a rocket. The writing was on the wall as the other studios quickly piled on, because now the entire profit was theirs and theirs alone...they no longer needed to share anything with Blockbuster or anyone else. This was a HUGE blunder on Blockbusters part...nearly as big as the epic of all epic blunders committed by AT&T when they turned down the US Govt/DARPA for taking complete ownership over what we now call the Internet. AT&T told them, it's too expensive to maintain, and regular people would never use it anyway. I don't know why I ever buy movies...I can probably count on 1 hand the number of movies I have ever watched more than once or twice.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) It's just an outdated tradition. Nowadays you end up dating the same person for a year or seven before proposing (poor college student/poor law student, no money for a ring in my case), you meet the family for holidays and sometimes you even move in with that person beforehand. You become married before getting married so there's no reason to give the family a heads up. Unless you're doing it really early they should expect that to be the logical next step. Ahhh luvvv it when you analyze...
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 09:01 AM) "Asking for permission" sounds creepy; it isn't theirs to give. It's not really asking for permission...it is usually considered to be asking for their blessing...meaning if you don't get it, you still do it anyways
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 07:59 AM) If they blew a whistle for every touch people would be on here saying the game had no flow. They made some ridiculously horrible calls all night like the goaltending and foul on Burke, but they also let the kids play and dictate the outcome for the most part. The play in the paint in the second half was who wanted it more. Exactly! And that is what the coaches who employ these ultra-aggressive defensive pressure schemes are counting on....that the refs are not going to want to blow the whistle every play because the game will cease to be a game anymore, but instead a free throw shooting content.
  18. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 07:56 AM) The refs allowed Michigan ball handlers to push them off the entire night and didn't call a foul. They were simply letting them play. I remember Hardaway Jr. was bringing the ball up with Siva pressuring him and he just pushed square out of the way. There was way too much theatrics for my taste on both sides and that's probably why there was hesistation for calling fouls. Yeah, you are right, then they start allowing the ball handler to push him back off... It's just stupid...that is not defense, it is a foul.
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 07:54 AM) Or he could pass, or run the guy off a screen. Thats basketball. The refs allowing Big Ten type ball should have favored Michigan. But once again they decided to not play defense and watch Burke dribble. Lou's guards are tiny little things, if that bothered them so much why didnt they just have one of their bigger guys bring up the ball? I didnt notice that being an issue at all. Physical play is the way we see our teams play week in and week out. MSU has won titles based on that style. Well, Jay Bilas and several other commentators would disagree, but whatever...I do realize they have been calling it this way for years now, so it's nothing new.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 07:08 AM) Because it wasn't lopsided at all. If anything Michigan got the benefit because they were in the bonus the entire second half. The officiating didn't cause Michigan to stand around and watch Burke dribble nor did it cause them to stop playing defense entirely. If anything they had the chance to be more aggressive as that's the way the game was called. There were 6 losses in conference play that looked a lot like last night. But the officiating did favor Louisville's style of play, which eventually wore down Michigan...whereas if they would have called a tighter game, then the game gets played more along Michigan's style and they win the game. What drives me nuts about college basketball is that they allow the teams that pressure to foul constantly. The play that stands out is when they allow the pressuring defenders to ride on the ball handler's hip as he brings the ball up the court. Coaches have done a very good job of teaching their defenders to then lean on the ball handler. Now I don't know how much you play full court basketball, but it is incredibly annoying to have a defender leaning on you and pushing you as you try to bring the ball up the court. And if the ball handler slows down to try and shake the defender, then the defense brings over another defender to trap. Once a team gets a trap on, the officials will almost never call a foul. So instead, the ball handler is rushing the ball up the court with a defender riding and leaning and pushing him, which is where you see the errant pass or the out of control drive to the basket, where another defender suddenly slides over right as the offensive player leaves the ground to attempt the shot, and a charge is called. And so much of it stems from the one play that the refs do not call...all they have to do is refuse to allow the defender to ride the ball handler and so much of this would go away and then we'd have basketball again...
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 8, 2013 -> 09:27 PM) Lol, Michigan would have won me a hefty sum tonight. Nice try though. I haven't seen much b****ing about the refs influencing the outcome of the game anywhere except right here. It was a great almost wide open game. And the better team won. Rock, I don't know how you can see how poorly that game was officiated and not think the outcome of the game was affected. This wasn't one or two plays they messed up...this was literally 15-20 calls that were very questionable....beginning to the end... Oh well...
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 8, 2013 -> 09:16 PM) Yes every second. When a team gets into foul trouble they back off. Michigan and especially McGary got away with a lot. Somehow the fouls were 2 to 1 against Lou. I saw the overall number one seed beat a good not great Michigan team that got hot. They spent the second half watching Trey Burke play. I've seen that Michigan team lose many games this year. They weren't beaten by the refs, they were beaten by a better team, and frankly better coaching down the stretch. I don't dispute your points about the coaching...but a tighter called game leads to a more open game, which I thought Michigan would have won. It wasn't until Louisville (and frankly, many of the favorites in games throughout the tournament) were allowed to foul, I mean pressure, where their guards are allowed to ride the ball handler, rebound without any regard for position, etc, that the game forcibly turned into the style of play Louisville thrives in. You think whatever you want. I certainly don't have to agree with an Ohio State fan about a Michigan game.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 8, 2013 -> 09:06 PM) So they let Louisville win by calling more fouls on them? Did you watch the game? As big as the disparity was, it could have been far worse...
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 8, 2013 -> 08:49 PM) What a game, better team won but what a run by Michigan. Inconsistent refereeing was annoying but didn't have all that much to do with the outcome. Sad the season is over. I guess football is next. I disagree. The refs have allowed teams that want to play rugby to turn the game into a rugby game whenever they choose. That is the reason Wichita almost lost to Ohio State and it is the reason they lost to Louisville. And now it was the reason Michigan lost tonight. They have to call the fouls consistently, even if it means they are going to be blowing the whistle constantly on the offending team. It is human nature to not want to constantly call infractions over and over, but that allows a team to dictate a style of defense that has a cumulative negative effect on the opposing team. I just don't care (and never have) for allowing a style of play that is not within the rules because you don't want to have to blow your whistle on them every trip down the court. That game was a joke, and I haven't even gotten to ridiculous calls they blew, they called about the only clean block of the game a foul, they assigned fouls to the wrong players, they allowed guys to block balls that had bounced 6 inches off the glass already, kicks...what an all-around piss-poor job.
  25. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Apr 8, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) Mine lived out of state, so I called him and asked/told. I think he appreciated it, but would not have been resented it if I hadn't. Lucky man!
