QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 10:38 AM) I remember when I was blowing everyone away....now I'm a wussy. Or you're married.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) no doubt that some of these offensive issues are what plagued the bears this year. for the past 3 years the bears have run offensive schemes that simply require good pass blocking from the offensive line. Both Martz's offense and Tice's were predicated on a more vertical passing game, down the field, deeper drop backs. for an team with a bad offensive line, there must be adaptability in using the quick hitter to the middle of the field (and emery said as much in his press conference). The only time I really recall the play calling changing in favor of quick 3 step drops is the Dallas game when they had Omiyale playing LT, then Martz went back to his old ways. Yep, we are remembering the exact same thing.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 08:59 AM) Just looked through the stats. Cutler had 66% as many rushing attempts as Andrew Luck and Christian Ponder, 75% as many as Rodgers, and the same number as Jake Locker, who missed 5 games. His rushing attempts are also similar to guys like Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman, Matthew Stafford. Cutler is more effective at getting yards per attempt than the latter names on those lists, but he's not getting out of the pocket and running nearly as much as "Mobile" QB's, particularly given the number of broken plays his line gave him. Well one of the things I have never really understood about our offensive playcalling is why we don't ever seem to be able to 1) call a slant or 2) execute a slant successfully. Green Bay runs a crapload of slants and other quick inside crossing routes that allow Rodgers to get rid of the ball quickly. They also roll him out quite a bit more than the Bears roll Cutler out. Now it's pretty clear that Rodgers is better on the run than Cutler (and probably the best in the League, honestly), but we just never seemed to call the offensive game according to the limitations of our offensive line (outside of that Dallas game last year and maybe a few other instances I am not recalling). So I agree with your general point, but I don't think that is a Cutler issue, as he has shown a really incredible ability to avoid pressure within the pocket and he has shown he can really be athletic when he gets outside of the pocket. I think it is more of a failure of our coaching staff to design and/or call the correct plays to try and deal with a subpar offensive line.

My biggest question is WHEN THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO DO SOMETHING EXCITING?
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 06:35 AM) Hell, not only their HC but their QB. Brees is a machine. Good point. One of the things Emery stressed in his presser was that he wants a coach to sell him on how he can win with THIS roster, and obviously that means he wants to hear how we can be successful with Jay Cutler, and not necessarily Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, or Peyton Manning. It's almost a catch-22 though, because a lot of the coordinators Emery will interview will be from teams with elite quarterbacks.

In football though, oftentimes you are looking to slot these players into your lineup within a year or two. In baseball, you are projecting out several years in most cases. It is much easier to address needs on a short-term basis than on a long-term basis, because you are not trying to predict the future as much.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 1, 2013 -> 08:08 PM) I wasnt trying to tease you, just making fun of Gruden. One thing that I was thinking about was Gruden has familiarity with the Tampa 2, also with Marinelli. I think emery is going for MCCoy, but something to think about I honestly think he is still open-minded, but he may just be a good actor. I get the impression that he wants to talk to some folks he has worked with before, some of the hot NFL candidates, and some of the hot college candidates, and see who makes him comfortable. Watching the press conference from this morning, pretty awesome how detailed Emery gets about his thinking in the draft and his research on the roster.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 1, 2013 -> 07:06 PM) *points a thumb at iamshack* THIS GUY RIGHT HERE, I LOVE HIS ENTHUSIASM FOR SOXTALK, AND I AM OF THE OPINION THAT HE IS THE BEST POSTER IN THE POSTING UNIVERSE. Yeah, I get it...and he overuses cliches all the time too...I wouldn't want him as our head coach. But I do like his enthusiasm and I think he is fairly well-liked around the league. I'm not disagreeing that he could use a little more Cris Collinsworth or Troy Aikman in him, but I understand his hesitancy to be too critical.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 1, 2013 -> 06:21 PM) I don't know if you noticed this, but Gruden loves EVERYONE! Would you harshly criticize players if you were hoping to get another coaching job?

Interesting that the media asked Jay about how he would feel if Josh McDaniels came in to coach...I love his honesty..."That would be awkward."

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:53 PM) Has there been any word on the assistant coaches/coordinators statuses? They are all still here, until further notice...but some apparently have no interest in sticking around.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 02:52 PM) He was a Bears coach before Yeah, ST from '97-2000

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) Alex Marvez @alexmarvez #Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong set for head coaching interviews with Kansas City & Chicago, a source tells @FOXSports.com Wasn't he on our staff before?

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 02:38 PM) I don't necessarily agree. He built a pretty talented roster. The QB spot is what's holding that team back. Granted, he's the guy who spent big money on Cassell, but if he can get that fixed, then I think the Chiefs could be pretty good. They had 5 guys make the Pro Bowl this year. The talent is there. The coaching and the QB was not. I agree...I think the Chiefs are closer than people think.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 02:34 PM) I don't know, it seems like Peyton Manning is the OC turning around Denver. McCoy is along for the ride. I tend to agree with that.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:30 PM) Ok. Those people are stupids I've gone to a ton of Bears games over the years, and we all know that nearly everyone is going to get the "suck" treatment from fans. People are drunk, frustrated, and they all know everything. It means very little. I get what DA is getting at, and he could prove to be right, but the bottom line is the offense has shown absolutely no real progress over the course of his tenure here, regardless of the addition of some new and legitimate weapons. Lovie's defenses took us as far as they could, but ultimately it was never enough. It's time to try something new. The goal isn't to win 10 games.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:16 PM) Nervous? I am pretty confident the Bears will screw this up. Me too...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) This has moved from black monday to bloody monday Yeah, AJ Smith and Norv out in SD
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 11:45 AM) I could see Lovie being the type of guy that pretty much refuses to become DC unless that is absolutely the only option for him, and at this point I could see him getting plenty of HC interviews. once guys get a taste of being HC, they dont like going back. And say what you will about lovie, he did leave chicago with a winning record, and that will play very favorably for him on the coach market. Good point...he could probably get a job in a place like Buffalo, as Wite suggests...or Cleveland.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 11:42 AM) I would love to see Lovie in Buffalo. Would be crazy if NE hired him...

Lovie will make a great defensive coordinator for someone. Good luck, old friend.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) what is SD waiting for? Just do it, you know you want to Is Lovie officially fired yet?

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 12:16 PM) Totally disagree about the way Briggs played this year. Roach did seem capable of taking Urlacher's role. I guess I am in the minority, but I think Briggs is a badass... I actually liked the trio of Briggs, Roach and Hayes...
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) Jake, the defense needs a big overhaul. 4 of the best players are on the wrong side of 30 and are showing signs of slowing down, and the dropoff from them to the next players is pretty steep. And the O line. My god the O line Agreed about the defense, but I don't know that I would call it an overhaul...and I tend to think if you keep running this system, and gradually replacing guys instead of "overhauling" the whole thing, you'd find it easier to replace Urlacher, Tilman, Briggs, etc., than it seems.
