QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 07:10 PM) Only got to see the bottom of the 9th today, but what a great job by Thornton after Humber continued to be the man. I have such confidence in Beckham's defense now, it's crazy. And Humberto didn't s*** the lead away after 90 pitches! Phillip. AGS.Humber.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 01:41 PM) If they put him on waivers he'd be claimed. So yes, there's hope to move him. The question is all about price/return. If the Twins put Mauer on waivers right now, would the Yankees claim him? I think the Twins could actually get a few decent prospects for Liriano, should they choose to deal him.

Excited that Breaking Bad season 3 has finally come out on blu ray/dvd....will allow me to dvr season 4 while I get through season 3 on blu ray. On another note, so I started watching The Shield since I've heard so many great things about it over the years but never managed to see it. I did this with The Wire and am very happy I took the time to go back and watch it. But I must admit I am not really feeling The Shield. I guess it's interesting that the main character is so flawed, and I'm sure that is part of the draw, but I just find the production value to be a bit weak and the acting sort of uninspiring. Not even close to The Wire thus far. Does it get better as the show got more successful/popular?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 10:52 AM) That contract was done on the assumption he'd keep putting up numbers like he did in 2009. Even without the injuries this year...the fact that he wasn't all there with the bats in Target field in 2010 made it look iffy. I was watching the Milwaukee broadcast of their game last night and they were talking about Mauer's contract. His hr/ab ratio is 235/1 in Target field, while it was 35/1 in the Metrodome. He's never driven in 100 runs, he's never scored 100 runs, and he's only hit more than 13 home runs in a season once, and he obviously doesn't steal bases. Obviously some of that is because he is a catcher and therefore misses the obligatory 20 games a year or so, but he has also suffered from injuries due to his insistence on being a catcher. And now they want him to entertain the notion of catching less and playing more 1b and DH and he wants no part of it. They are fuct.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 08:22 AM) Morneau isnt going anywhere with that contract and his injuries, and Mauer is still the face of the org despite his year. They could possibly sell off Thome and Kubel to an AL contender looking for a LH DH, or Kubel to a NL team looking for a LH outfielder. I dont know how they feel about Young but he is another guy with injuries piling up this year. Liriano is such a hot/cold player for them, I really think they would explore moving him for prospects. Capps is another guy who can go if they feel confident about Nathan rounding back into form. It's blatantly obvious already how big of a mistake the Joe Mauer contract was.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 10:28 PM) One of my favorite bands that never really hit it big, but still were somewhat well known has a tribute album coming out soon http://www.explodinginsound.com/2011/06/hu...rewell-and.html They had a song called "Stars" that got some play on Q101 back in the day, and also was the song on a They came out with two pretty awesome albums IMO They are from Champaign, btw Wow, I remember Hum...I have one of their albums buried around here somewhere...I seem to remember it having a zebra on it for some reason or another...I remember green and a zebra... As for the discussion about bands that never made it big, there are just so many of them...I have hundreds of albums by bands that the average person has never heard of, and that even pretty big music people have never heard of... And on a completely opposite note, was mopping the floors in my place and put on Pearl Jam's Backspacer as I have given it a rest since it came out...such an awesome album...the lyrics are really their best in years and years...possibly their best ever. I pray they continue this level of quality with their next album...

And we get to watch Garza spit every 4 seconds for 2 + hours unless we knock him out early...score some runs!

New blog post about Hawk, "Moneyball," Sabermetrics, etc

QUOTE (OsweGo-Go Sox @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 09:12 PM) http://whatkindofbloghasitbeen.wordpress.c...on-is-an-idiot/ This is my first baseball-related piece on my blog, but I was pretty satisfied with it. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who rolled his eyes at Hawk's random shot at "Moneyball" during today's telecast. Check it out, let me know what you think. Nice job! I would love to hear Hawk elaborate on this topic. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 12:48 AM) I hate when I have to give Wite credit. But he just demolished this thread. I like Wite. But again, I don't think anyone has a problem with Viciedo taking time away from Dunn. The problem is who do you take off this roster so that Viciedo can move up? You know they're not going to take Pierre/Teahen/Lilli off this roster. So who's it going to be? Best solution, IMO, is to make up a bulls*** injury for Dunn and just DL him and bring up Viciedo.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 11:36 PM) I have absolutely no problem with Viciedo coming up and taking significant at bats away from Dunn and Pierre. Perhaps a mental reprieve is exactly what Dunn needs to get back, and Viciedo is simply a better option than Pierre. You can get all 3 of them pretty significant playing time, which allows you to play the hot hand when it's necessary. If all 3 of them start hitting really well, then I'm sure there will be another on the field who is in the early stages of a slump that you can find a sub for. This team needs some kind of offensive spark, and Viciedo could be exactly that. I don't think ANYONE has a problem with Dunn getting days off. The problem is Cowley is going to argue we permanently bench Dunn and give up on him in favor of Viciedo, when you simply cannot do that. What player would you get rid of to bring up Viciedo?
-
I don't understand how these writers can be so shortsighted. Adam Dunn is owed approximately $49 million for the remainder of his contract here. But yeah, he's struggled terrible for 80 games, so let's just bench him permanently. Makes a ton of sense. These guys are absolute fools. If it were up to them, we'd have half the payroll spent on paying players in other organizations because we DFA'd them after 30 games.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 09:37 PM) For some reason I thought he was benched today. Probably because you didn't watch the game.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 08:26 PM) Nice to see Pierre and Beckham do so well. I refused to watch the game because of that godawful (on paper) lineup Oz threw together today. Though I did get back to a TV in time to watch Juan's blast off the fence. I was a little worried when Beckham almost got thrown out at the plate since that bomb kicked off the scoreboard perfectly to the right fielder. Great pitching again aside from the one bad inning. As far as Rios ... he is who he is. He's 0 for his last 11 after his hot streak in which he was 12 for 28 over seven games. is he hot or not? O for 11 is not good. 12 for 28 is good. His on base percentage for the season is .269; .593 OPS He had a hit today, a walk, and hit a few other balls hard.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 09:17 PM) I like Omar, but I wish he would retire. But can Lilli play IF again after working on mainly OF? He can play 2b, and you would never replace Morel at 3rd, but Lilli or Teahen can play that in a pinch.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 08:55 PM) Yet, that is a skill Teahen doesn't provide. At all. Exactly, if Omar is redundant, you want Teahen to provide something different. IMO, the two Brent's can do everything Omar can do with the exception of bat lefthanded. And if we've got Teahen, we've got that covered too.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 06:31 PM) Vizquel played some really solid d today. I'm not saying Omar doesn't have skills. I just think they are redundant.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 05:28 PM) If you call up Viciedo, then I don't think you still have a need for Teahen. However, they're not going to move Teahen. If I had to choose between the two, I would send Omar packing and keep Teahen. But we know Ozzie's not going to do that to his hero Omar.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 05:22 PM) Rongey arguing that Viciedo won't make a difference to this line-up. Ugh...same argument we heard that Kotsay didn't hurt the White Sox last year. I was actually ALMOST thinking if Rios continues to struggle that I'd be okay with Pierre in CF and Viciedo in LF. ALMOST. But how long can they keep trotting Dunn out there? If Lillibridge continues to slump, there's no other option against LHP (for Dunn), because you need Castro and Teahen isn't going to be starting against lefties, either. Rios does not deserve to get benched. He's hitting the ball hard right now and whether he is loafing it or not, he is one of our two best defensive OF's. Viciedo would certainly make a difference in this lineup, but unfortunately, Ozzie is not going to give up Pierre or Omar, so if he does come up, it's going to be at the expense of Teahen or Brent, both of whom deserve a legitimate role on this team because of their versatility.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 04:53 PM) Pierre and Beckham picked up the offense today! It would be such a blessing if those two can get it going at the top of the lineup. Please please please Gordo, let this be a sign of things to come...

White Sox vs Rockies 7:40 CT first pitch

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 10:12 PM) He's been absolutely fantastic, and he's made it so they can't send him down no matter what. He handles almost anything he gets to very well, but I haven't looked at the advanced metrics...do the numbers suggest that he is getting to a lot of balls, or just handling those that he does get to? -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 10:06 PM) What? Sox should have easily won last night, and then Rockies had what, 3 different situations with man on 3rd and less than 2 outs where they didn't score tonight? We scored 2 runs due to Seth Smith's awful defense. The post I quoted said the series should be 1-1, because both teams should have won yesterday. I was just a bit confused. -

This team definitely has some character...they continually bounce back from these brutal losses...but they just cannot get out of their own way enough to put together any kind of winning streak.
