QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 19, 2010 -> 09:44 AM) That's a terrible reason to hold onto somebody. If they don't think he's going to work out for us, they shouldn't keep him because he may have a good year and people will point at us and laugh. They're all going to laugh at you!

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Nov 19, 2010 -> 01:00 AM) That's what I'm saying though. If they're drawing Urlacher out on deep routes and we can't get pressure, Vick can run for days or find the receiver who eventually gets open. He can pick you apart either way. I don't have a clue where you even begin with drawing up a defense to defend Vick. We always played well against him in the past, but that was before he was developed as a QB as he is now. I honestly just hope the guy has an off game. The Colts managed to keep him in check a bit, so it can be done. But if he plays like he did against Washington, honestly, we're screwed. The good thing is we won tonight. I think we need to come out of the next 6 games with 3 wins to win the division: Best chances for wins are Detroit and Minnesota, then just go 1-3 against Philly/New England/NYJ/Green Bay. Probably our best chance there is against NYJ.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 11:07 PM) Why didn't they try to run though? They were dropping and passing quite a bit even though the game was within a score for the whole first half. Thigpen was awful, Bears defense has been great, but for a team that can run like Miami I'm surprised they didn't try to hide/protect Thigpen a hell of a lot more. I really thought we would see a ton of wildcat tonight.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 10:51 PM) That was the game Grossman came back from injury at halftime to replace Orton. The game time temp was way under 32 degrees, no doubt. I was there. It was 2 degrees.

QUOTE (IChaseBlackWood @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) First thing I did before we ordered it!! lol Thank you so much for responding though!! I was hoping to get opinions from someone who actually owns one .. someone who OBVIOUSLY has great taste ..so I turned to Soxtalk!! Bren, Order this book from Amazon...it will teach you how to actually use the camera correctly (and take the best pictures possible) instead of just leaving it in auto mode and pressing the big button. I own it, and it's a great, informative book. Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 12, 2010 -> 02:50 PM) New Cudi album is solid. I don't own the first one...is it one of those albums you just have to have? I listen to the song previews on iTunes and it just doesn't pull me in, but obviously those are just 30 second clips...is it one of those albums that any self-respecting music fan just has to own?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 08:55 AM) New Girl Talk mix is a lot fun. Free download Yes, it is...I seem to like this one a bit more than the last few...

Check for reviews on that model on cnet.com It's a bit of an older camera though, so it may not have all the newest, fanciest features. But overall a nice camera.

You guys should just do two lists. One for craft beers (or beers only Jim has heard of), and one for more widely distributed beers.

QUOTE (T R U @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 05:10 AM) Yes there is a reason Thigpen was the 3rd QB.. Henne was a 2nd round pick who needed to be given the reigns and Pennington wasn't going to be 3rd.. Had Penny not come back, Thigpen would have been 2nd string.. besides, its not like Henne had been lighting it up this year I don't see Thigpens play being too far off from what we've gotten from the QB position anyways.. he looked pretty good in his limited play against Tennessee.. I don't see how you can say Miami and Chicago are the same team.. Chicago has two bad losses to Washington and Seattle, they should have lost to Detroit, and they have eeked through every win they have outside of Carolina and getting Minnesota at home.. If they lose to the Bears Thursday, then I will agree with you they are a decent team at best.. there wont even be any excuses with Thigpen in.. they should beat the Bears, at home, no problem if they are better than a decent team.. The statistics for both teams are very similar. You can go back and forth all day long about who's wins and losses were better/worse, but both these teams are in the top 9-13 range of the NFL or so. Miami should have an advantage not having to travel during the short week, but come on, to say they have "no chance" of losing this game? Trust me, they have plenty of chances to lose this game.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 01:21 PM) Just flying out and than driving your vehicle has a cost though. You are talking about a few hundred bucks for airfare, than the gas cost, and than of course your time costs. That could be factors that push it to potentially make more sense to buy new or to just buy in your area. All depends on how much added savings there is. Especially since the flip side of the argument says that being in Texas also means you have a very high supply of pick up trucks so you'd think there would still be a solid used truck supply. Again, I have no idea as I'm not looking into buying a truck. Obviously. There has to be a cost savings of at least a few thousand to make it worth it, in my opinion. This is pretty crazy to think about, considering that 3-4 years ago, when gas prices were through the roof, dealers couldn't give away their trucks. I went with a friend to buy a new truck and we negotiated them down something like 10k below the msrp, and could have done even better on some of the more expensive models, but my friend's wife wouldn't let him spend a few thousand more (even though he would have been saving much more had he done so).

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) The problem tends to be that more and more people are keeping their cars as opposed to buying new ones so that, combined with the cars for clunkers, has lowered the supply of used cars. On the flip side, the new car suppliers who have been hurt by the economy are working on putting out new products and have some very good incentives. When you combine the two factors and again depending on the vehicle purchased, the old school theories have to be rethought. Additionally, you have to also remember to better factor in your cost of financing as well since new cars get much more preferential financing. Again though, this might not be a huge point if you are buying your car in cash, etc. It just isn't as cut and dry as it used to be. And than there are the gray areas that really have nothing necessarily to do with financial stuff such as your overall preference, changes/improvements made to the new vehicle versus the used one, etc. I know when I looked at it, the cost of ownership for me for the specific cars I'm looking at and while I went in looking to purchase a 2-4 year old vehicle, I'm now leaning much more heavily towards purchasing the new vehicle. Nothing fancy, just a Ford Fusion or a Hyundai Sonata. Those Sonata's are great cars. I tend to be interested in foreign sports cars, so buying new doesn't really make sense, because the deals you're talking about don't usually exist in that particular niche, but you definitely make a good point regarding incentives and financing for the overall new car and truck market. One note on supply, the popularity of short-term leasing in the last 10 years usually maintains a pretty solid supply of reasonably priced, low-mileage vehicles in the used-car marketplace. Obviously this applies more to certain vehicles than others, however. Just depends on what you are looking for, I suppose.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) The problem this season was going in with an obvious potential gaping hole at 1 position and trying to justify it. I don't think Tex was suggesting leaving the DH spot unclaimed until midseason. Well, considering our payroll is going to be extremely taxed, barring some miracle trade of Mark Buehrle or Jake Peavy, I don't see us adding some superstar bat. We're going to need to find production that is undervalued by the marketplace and take our chances with it. If this salary range for Manny is correct, then this is exactly the kind of transaction Kenny should be looking to make.
-
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 02:01 PM) Yawn, that just seems like a very un-Kenny like move. I don't see it happening, will be shocked if it does. Mid season, need something, yeah. But not going into the season. Didn't we learn a lesson last year from this exact approach?

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) I am looking for a half ton pickup to tow a travel trailer and boat. I'm not choosy, the Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and Toyota will all do just fine. What I am strating to notice is how well they retain their value (not a good thing when buying used). I am seeing 1-2 year old F150 XLTs selling for close to original price. With rebates, it is possible to pick one up for $23,000 to $24,000. I am seeing vehicles with 25,000 miles selling for $20,000. Seems crazy. A lot of it depends on your local market, Tex. You live in Texas. Everyone there drives a truck. You probably couldn't be in a worse market to buy a used truck. Dealerships, especially those like Carmax, will ship used trucks they take in from markets like Chicago and California to their Texas stores because the demand is so much greater there. If I were you, I'd look for where the cheapest nearby markets for used trucks are. It's possible you could fly out to somewhere like New Orleans or something and drive the truck back.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 12:25 PM) My concern is that we may not be a division contender by the mid-point of the season and he'll become the usual cancer that we've seen in the past. Then you DFA him. Chances are, by that point, you will have already received pretty fair production versus his contract, and it won't be that big of a deal.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) For a 39 year old former steroid abuser who missed about 1/3 of last season with injuries and can't play the field any more? Manny was only worth about $6 million last year according to fangraphs. You might call that a bargain, but it's certainly not a ridiculous one. Your position on this issue is well-known, Balta... I think it's pretty safe to assume last season was about a worst-cast scenario for Manny as a hitter. And he was still worth $6 million. Over the course of a full year in our park as a DH, I would feel very comfortable with a $5 million offer.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 11:50 AM) He also led the AL in HRs from the batter's box. You mean the on-deck circle, my friend...
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) The last I really heard of this issue was that the price of used cars spiked substantially after the cash for clunkers program, which eliminated a large number of old used cars from the market (decreased supply, constant demand, increased price). Perhaps...I still can't imagine it spiking enough to make buying a brand spanking new car a better investment than a 2-4 year old car with low-mileage...

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) There are a lot of recent studies/financial analysis which have indicated that now in the given climate it can be more beneficial than in the past to buy new. Of course that depends on the vehicle being purchased, etc and the deals out there. I only know cause I've been doing a ton of research as of late as we get ready to replace one of our two cars in the household. The 10+ year old Isuzu. Interesting. However, that doesn't address the question of whether it is more beneficial to buy new in this given climate to buy used?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 10:48 AM) The knocks on Vick have always been that he can't throw downfield, that he doesn't complete many passes, and that he turns the ball over too much, but he was always a winning QB with Atlanta because he was so dangerous. The fact that he is now throwing as well as he is makes him ridiculously dangerous. I think you are right in that, if he's not the best pure QB in the league, he's probably the most valuable player right now. I would say that the Eagles are a legitimate Super Bowl contender with him at QB and I don't think the same thing can be said if they have Kolb starting all year. That game he played last night was probably one of the best games I have ever seen a quarterback play. He was absolutely unstoppable. Sure, the Redskins defense couldn't seem to stop anything the Eagles called, but Vick was masterful. Every ball was seemingly right on target. He ran with incredible vision. I watched Brady Sunday night and I thought that was a masterful performance. Then I watched Vick make Brady seem average with his performance last night. I agree with you - if Vick plays anywhere close to that level for the remainder of the season, the Eagles are absolutely Super Bowl contenders.

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 14, 2010 -> 09:16 PM) Anyone buy a car there? Any tips? I'm starting to look for a new truck. I'm not certain if I am going to go new or used. Just starting to look at options. Go used. Autotrader.com should provide you with plenty of options.
