  1. Thanks for all the comments and advice from everyone! This has been a real learning experience. I am definitely going to look into some literature, look more into obtaining more information on what diet alterations can be made, and the karate/martial arts thing is something that I keep seeing come up here. Wonderful stuff guys, and keep it coming if you'd like! Mark
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 01:02 PM) Who is the boy living with? I would think the parent who lives with him the most should have a lot of input. He lives primarily with his mother. He spends basically 3 days with his father and 4 days with his mother. His mother is a single mother with one other child (a 7 year old daughter). I have been friends with the mother for 9 months now and we recently began dating. The father has a live-in girlfriend and a small child with that girlfriend. I believe the baby is less than a year old. My guess is that the father is preoccupied a bit and would rather his son be well-behaved and easy to supervise while he is spending time there.
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I have seen some kids make incredible improvements when they are placed on a proper drug regimine. I am also certain the drugs have been over prescribed, and of course not every kid is a candidate. I would certainly want a second or third opinion before entering the treatment. I'm not certain how someone can just look at all kids and say none should be treated. Not every kid who is hyper can control it, no matter how much you punish them. For those kids, properly diagnosed and properly treated, a treatment regime is literally a life saver. At least for my students, the Doctors follow up almost monthly with a questionaire asking about the student's behavior, attention, school work, etc. They seem to be closely monitored with the goal of using the lowest dosage possible, including zero. Thanks for the input, Tex. Sounds like he took a look at some surveys that both parents filled out as well as some teachers. But to make the decision without his mother present seems incredibly strange to me... I think it really is a very individual and personal decision, so I agree that multiple opinions would be a good thing.
  4. QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 01:20 PM) exercise is a big one have him do P90X with you! Maybe I'll make him do plyo every day
  5. After some preliminary research, it seems like increased exercise, improved nutrition, and counseling could help before trying meds.
  6. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) IAM, If there are concerns about the kid having ADHD, he should be taken to a psychologist to have legitimate, objective diagnostic tests done. Based on the results, the psychologist can recommend appropriate treatment, including methods the parents (and you) can use to help with his attention issues, therapy, or medication. IMO, the dad shouldn't be able to walk into his doctor's office and say "My kid is hyper." and get a prescription. Yeah, both of us were shocked by the behavior of the Dr.
  7. QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) i'm with the dad. he's 9 years old and not focused? what!?!!? he's a kid. That's what they do. Doctor's these days make so much money off ADD and ADHD because guess what? every frickin' kid could be diagnosed with it. kids 9 years old are hyper, they don't pay attention, they don't wanna do chores and they don't wanna do homework. there's nothing wrong with them. Reddy, this is what his mother and I are saying. His father wants him to take the meds, even so far as he sort of lied to the boy's mom about what kind of Dr's appt. this was, the Dr. then suggested this medicine (Concerta), and authorized them to have a "trial plan" of some type (not sure if he wrote them an actual script yet). IMO, the Dr. was actually waaay out of line here in going as far as he did without any kind of permission from the mother, even going so far as to explain the side effects of the drug to the boy by claiming "all of us have to deal with stomach aches and headaches once in a while..." His mom would rather he not be on the meds and instead try to deal with the problem in other ways, such as through better nutrition, perhaps some counseling, and better self-discipline. I am trying to remain open-minded, although I agree with you, Reddy. He is 9 years old. Of course he is energetic and lazy and unfocused and obsessive all at once. That's how kids are.
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 10:36 AM) damn shack. Thats a heavy heart situation Ahh, no regrets...as I said, I will always love her, but I don't think we would have made a great married couple. We knew each other for too long for it not to have happened on its own...
  9. Hey everyone, I am dating a woman who has a 9 year old son. He's a very intelligent boy, and he is a sweet kid, but he seems to have issues focusing on things he is supposed to (schoolwork, helping his mother around the house, etc.,). The boy's father has taken him to a doctor, who prescribed the drug Concerta for the boy. My girlfriend, the boy's mother, does not believe he needs ADHD medicine and is against him taking this or any other ADHD medicine. She is asking for my help and advice. I gave her my own opinion, but having no children of my own and no real experience with these types of meds, I feel like my advice is a bit limited. Anyone have children on these types of meds? Thoughts, opinions, experience, etc.,? Thanks
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 17, 2010 -> 10:19 AM) Did you know she was ready to marry you? How did you feel about her coming clean about all of that? Guilty? Smug? Did you feel like you got her back? At the time, no, I had no idea. Although looking back on it, I should have known. She made such an effort. And I did not. I was not happy that she was telling me all these things afterwards. It's really sobering to have someone tell (while they are now engaged or already married) that they wanted to marry you previously when the two of you were together. I have always loved this girl, and always will - we have an instant attraction to one another - but the chemistry was always a bit shaky. Secondly, I never liked her family, and I get along with everyone's family, so that was a huge reason for why I never thought I would make her happy. The night she told me all this stuff she claimed that her parents were like overjoyed that she had run into me again and had started dating me, but I have a hard time believing that was the truth. That night I told her I loved her, that I always would, that perhaps I had made a big mistake in letting her go, but that I think in the end, it would be the best thing for both of us. I guess the jury is still out on that one.
  11. My first love I met right after graduating HS. I went to a private school, she had gone to a public school, and we crossed paths through some mutual friends the summer after graduating HS basically. She played and toyed with me for a few years off and on while she went to the U of I and I stayed back here in the suburbs. She ended up back in Chicago and worked at the Board of Trade and had her fun with those boys for several years. Thing came full circle as I ran into her again about 4 years ago and started messing around with her during the White Sox World Series run. She was in the end of a long term relationship and was happy to find some excitement. We dated sort of casually for the next 18 months, in which I made her basically make up for toying with me back in college, before deciding that I just didn't think I could ever really make her happy in the long term. About a year ago I get a text from her telling me she got engaged. I met up with her one night last summer when I came back into town and she grilled me about why I had broken up with her, told me she had been ready to marry me, and told me she wasn't sure whether to marry her fiance or not. I think they got married about 2 weeks ago.
  12. Hah, I am pretty proud of him for admitting he made an error (even though it may not have really been an error). There are obviously some terms here that are close enough to make Damon consider both offers. I just don't see KW getting into any bidding war and playing Boras' game, so I doubt they are holding out expecting to see offers increase much.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 07:32 PM) f*** plyo was hard, im still huffing and puffing. I was so weak in the bonus round. The middle set with the jump squats and the mary jane's is brutal. Then that last set is pretty rough too. If it weren't for those soldier marches or whatever I think I would probably die during the 4th set.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 07:21 PM) Dont know, mine compressed like a mofo and was weird. I may have to host my pics when im done. I am super excited to see what happens this next 30 days. I know my mid section and shoulders are night and day. I have a 4-pack coming in, just need to clean up the lower abs. Yeah, this next 30 days should be interesting. Really happy with the progress after the first 30.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 08:05 PM) f***ing Plyo. Best part of today was taking my 30 day pictures and comparing them to day 1 aka post-holiday cookie body. Yeah, I just did the same. Taking a week off of plyo really doesn't help...next rest week I'm not going to skip it. How the hell do you upload a file that is small enough to fit here? Jesus
  16. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 10:14 PM) When I was there, the rec center was unintentionally segregated. Us white boys playes on the courts on the left. Everytime I went to the right, they would never let me play even though I was better than most of them. The last day of finals before graduation I went to play and nobody was on the left courts so I wandered over to the right and a court needed one so I got to play. I used it as my national title game and killed it. The other team was yelling at teh guy guarding me cuz I scored 8 of our 11 points, including the game winner in my last rec game there and I walked off into the sunset. The best feeling ever when people underrate you because of your appearance.... I kinda like dressing like Woody Harrelson in White Men Can't Jump so I get intentionally underrated.

It was rough but damn it felt pretty good though. Sounds like Rock, you, and myself are all right at the exact same point in our current cycle. Yeah, the pushups WEAR you out.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 09:41 PM) What are we talking in terms of price and where can I get them? I bought mine at Dick's Sportiing Goods, probably $55 or so for the three total. You can check online at Amazon.com, I know they have some designed to work with P90X. You can probably also find them cheaper at Target or Walmart. They are really starting to become a popular piece of exercise equipment, so a lot more places are carrying them now.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 09:11 PM) What sort of bands, rock? You're going to want one light one for triceps, maybe 10-15 lbs resistance, then probably a 25 lb medium band, and then a 35-50 lb heavy band.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 09:07 PM) When in doubt, have another shake. With how many cals we need to bring in and how much protein, just eat or drink as much protein as you can. I usually have a muscle milk light shake for breakfast, an optimum whey shake after my workout, then a lean meat sandwich, maybe some salmon or tuna, and some other random sources such chicken noodle soup or something. My guess is I take in 125-150 grams...probably need to still do more...

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 08:58 PM) Im actually taking the regular stuff since they changed their formula, I'm finding its a great post workout shake. I'll supplement my shakes with the occasional ISOpure protein drink once a dayish. I've been throwing a touch of peanut butter in with my cookies and cream after workouts for the MM regular. I guess I'm not going to worry too much about it...Just try to get 175 grams of protein a day and eat well and everything will workout in the end...

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 07:52 PM) Pull up bar or bands that hook into your door. Dumbbells are a plus if you dont want to use bands. Hey Rock, are you still happy with the Muscle Milk light? I've been making a chocolate flavored shake every day for breakfast with a banana blended into it. I'm really happy with it, but don't really know the difference...

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 06:44 PM) Now I remember this dvd, and how much I hated it until I went through it a few times. Once you hit two twitch speed pushups, if you are toast, you are going to suffer through that workout. f*** im tired. Yeah, I think it was because most of the exercises were new to me, but it also seemed like the exercises didn't work as well together as they did in Back & Chest.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 05:37 PM) Alright, new month, new workouts. Chest Shoulders and Triceps tonight with a delightful ARX routine at the end. I just finished Chest, Shoulders & Triceps myself. It was pretty brutal for me first time through...Plus, I broke the band I use for my triceps the other day, so my work in that area was really weak. Not a particularly good workout by me today. Need to clean it up!
