  1. Honestly, I ate my crow already, but to all of you rubbing it in, you have to admit that the commercial was so incredibly tame that it didn't even get a message across. It isn't as if they pulled it off in a respectful way such as some here apparently envisioned.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 1, 2010 -> 08:10 PM) I wouldn't say useless; I'd say their values are limited. I can tell you that I would much rather have one of them in an H2H league than some closer who is putting up a 4.50+ ERA but is getting saves. I'll concede the saves and improve the team ERA, K's, WHIP, and BB within reason. Some leagues reward you the same for holds as they do saves, making a guy like Thornton pretty damn valuable.

Took a day off yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks. Wanted to workout, just didn't find the time. In my "rest week" here, week 4. Yoga today. Blah. Looking forward to Core Synergistics tomorrow (I think).
  4. I agree it will be interesting to see how they adjust to their new park. I think both of you guys are making valid points, one of which is they will be unfamiliar with the park; the other is that they have steadily been changing their roster to favor more of a slugging approach. The Yankees struggled a bit in the first year in their new park, before going on a tear there and winning 36 of their last 42 or something (IIRC). It'll be interesting to see how much remains of the Twins' fundamental approach now that more members of their lineup will be in "slugging mode."
  5. Nice how two people have picked the Saints to win the game in our poll since the game ended.
  6. I think it was only a matter of time until this happened... Guys, relationship thread. If you want to create a sexuality thread or something, be my guest. But keep it somewhat respectable so if a woman chooses to read it she can't sue us.
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) Dr. Walter Bishop (Fringe) Oooh, good one!
  8. This guy is pretty rough on Manning. www.cbssports.com
  9. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 02:02 AM) I cant believe people actually liked the half time show, the lights looked cool and all but I thought they were horrible! Seriously, horrible? May I ask your age?
  10. I have to say, I take back everything I said about the ad. It was about as well done as I could have possibly imagined.
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 10:03 PM) Yeah that was a very inoffensive, non-controversial commercial, to the point where the message wasn't even obvious... honestly it made everyone who made such a big deal out of it look kind of foolish. Hah, thanks!
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 10:47 PM) Jared Mitchell has played 34 games in low-A ball. Sure, his ceiling is higher, but I imagine Joe Borchard's ceiling is higher still too. You need something to base value off of, and 34 games is nothing that you can do much of anything with. Jordan Danks has played a half season at AA - and did very poorly, but had injury issues - and played very well in the AFL. If you are talking strictly value, Jordan Danks' value is higher than Jared Mitchell's is right now simply because there's a legitimate scouting report to deal with and both are legitimate prospects. I know what you're saying, but if I were an opposing GM, and I had my choice between the two, I would take Mitchell - unless of course I needed to fill a position immediately and I thought Jordan could do so.
  13. Well that was much ado about nothing. Did they scale the ad back in the end? If you didn't know the Tebow's story, you wouldn't even understand what they were trying to say there...
  14. So my fortunes have reversed! Yes, my programming went down yesterday... The tech came out today...looks around....goes into some other room in our building, comes back, and starts uploading some other program guide. Then the channels start popping up. I say, what was the problem? He says, I'm still not really sure. There are two systems in your building and I just hooked you up to the other one. Don't say anything, because this system is better... So I start asking some more questions, gently...I know that when I got DirecTV in Sept for the NFL Sunday Ticket), I was told that the dish on our building was antiquated, and that I would only get a few channels in HD. I was pissed, but I figured it was worth it to switch from cable so I could have the Sunday Ticket. Well, I say, so when you say a new system, you mean, there is a new dish up there? And he says yep. I say why doesn't anyone know? Why are we not all hooked up to it? He says because we are still negotiating over the price and some other terms. So it has been sitting up there since November, ready to go, but no one is hooked up to it. No one but you, at least... And he tells me not to tell anyone... But now I have all the HD channels again, and I am the only DirecTV subscribing tenant in our building hooked up to the new dish... That, my friends, is what you call a silver lining...
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) don't stop get it get it My thoughts exactly!
  16. My damn DirecTV is still down. Called the company. They are trying to find a technician to send out. f*** me.
  17. And like some sort of cruel fate, my DirecTV went down for the first time ever tonight. Should be fun trying to get the technicians out tomorrow on the day before the damn Super Bowl...

Ahh, just finished legs and back. Damn those 80/20 things at the end...
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 07:32 PM) I don't care, never did I say they were. I don't think going to a trade should be included as someone who just finished high school and did nothing else. There is a big difference than graduating from high school and than working at Walmart as a cashier than there is graduating high school working with someone in the field during high school and continuing that on during the next few years and becoming a very skilled tradesmen. In America we should be pushing people two ways...into an established trade program or into college. Is the price of learning a trade similar to that of college tuition?
  20. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) If you have a law degree and are applying for an entry level marketing position, they are going to feel more comfortable offering the marketing major out of college as opposed to you. Yes, you have the better degree and a law degree, but they are likely to stay in there field and be doing something that fits there long-term goal so the stability is there. A freaking professional company isn't going to hire a high schooler over a college kid for an entry level finance/marketing/accounting position. Again, you are completely taking the point out of context. It doesn't have to be some untrained nose-picking "high schooler." How about someone who's worked their way up from the mail room or from some very insignificant position? I don't know how you could be missing this, but many companies have employees that did not finish college who have started out at some lower rung and through experience and a good work ethic, have taken a traditional entry level position usually offered to a college grad. And they do this because that employee is already accustomed to working for the company, has adapted to the company's mission and vision, has experience, is willing to take a lower salary, will likely not leave at the first chance of a position with another company, etc. If you aren't aware of the ever-growing presence of employees like this in many workplaces across many industries, than you aren't looking very closely.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) Well I could have never gotten my job without a degree and I make pretty damn good money for a 26 year old. No one is claiming that people who have college degrees are somehow doomed for failure. The debate is about whether or not it is still such an advantage to get a degree considering all of the factors mentioned throughout this thread. Also keep in mind that you happen to be employed in a very specialized field. Just as I could never become a practicing attorney without my law degree, that does not diminish the point we are making about the entire job market and educational system.
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) I don't buy the above one bit. The college degree just shows that you have a willingness to learn at a high level and are responsible (yes it does more than that, but at the basic level it does that). It doesn't teach me anything about what I'm going to do in the real world, it might teach me the regulations and laws that apply and basic theories to an approach, but that is about it. A company hires you with your college background because it shows you are smart enough to pick up what they train you. And really only some companies will train you that well (ie, the big time companies with reputations for being exceptional places to start your career). So I don't buy this load of mularkey that for a corporate position of some sort they now want you to have a high school degree as opposed to a college degree. I could see if you are talking about working at Wendys that they wouldn't give a s***, but otherwise, they'll take the college degree. Jason, I don't mean to bite the hand that feeds me here, but you have a habit of jumping into these threads days after they were originally debated, pulling something out of the middle of it, taking it out of context, and responding to it individually instead of the following the flow of the debate. I think if you continue reading you'll see more of where I was going with that point.
  23. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 12:21 PM) Hey guys for class I'm supposed to either talk to a lawyer or call a law office to find the answers to this so I figured I'd ask the lawyers of soxtalk to help me out. Here's what I need to know. find what type of entities (business organizations) you can file in the state of Illinois and what it costs... also what it costs if you hire an attorney to do it... (Filling Fees, Filling requirements) Will you be in the City for class soon? My best advice would be to go to the Sec of State's Office and just ask them for all their forms. My stepfather, who is an atty, used to always make me go in there before class and file Limited Partnerships for him and what not. They can give you all kinds of info there. And as jenks said, check the website.
  24. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 06:57 AM) Actually I will reject that argument (wow, what a surprise) Some careers pay less, some more. Some people are happy working any job as long as it pays well. Others want to follow their passion. So sure, you should pick a major based on cost/benefit, others should not. None of that changes whether it is financially advantageous to an individual, or our nation, for that matter, for our young people to attend college in the current economic climate.
  25. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 04:45 AM) LT says he's done as a Charger Well, this is intriguing. Does anyone consider the Bears should consider him as a #2 back? They could use someone to compliment Forte. Something tells me he is not going to be interested in being a #2 back. And some team will take him on as their #1 back. At this point in his career, my guess is he isn't a whole lot different than Forte, to be honest. Wouldn't it be something to see him go to those Patriots...
