4/13 Gamethread: Sox (6-4) vs. Detroit (2-9); 1:05, WGN

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 12:47 PM) Nice rip by Crede, just right at Jones. I think Quentin will do a lot of damage vs Rogers, as his pitch speed is perfect for his swing. Fathom, Do you at all seem to think that Quentin tries to hit too many homers? It just doesn't seem like he ever hits any line drives...all pop ups and ground balls. Not that he doesn't hit the ball hard, but just doesn't seem to hit too many liners...his swing seems a bit loopy to me. -

QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) I'm getting so sick of seeing Uribe and his .176 average and .567 OPS in the lineup everyday... other then that, no complaints. I'm not extremely happy about his success at the plate either, but I'm just beginning to wonder.... When will Sox fans realize that their are two phases of the game for position players? Offense AND Defense. I for one, have been extremely pleased with the play at 2b from Juan thus far. He is our 9th hitter (except when Toby Hall plays, hah), not everyone in the lineup needs to be some OPS hog (although it would be ideal). -

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) Could Ozzie's use of Carlos Quentin in the leadoff spot -- as opposed to Ozuna or Ramirez -- be a sign of a total shift in leadoff-man philosophy for Ozzie Guillen? Has he finally come around to the theory that OBP > Speed at the top? Or am I just being overly optimistic? I don't think we can really be certain until Owens comes back. Only then will I be convinced. -
QUOTE (zimne piwo @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 02:56 AM) I see your point, but I fail to see the purpose in lumping Ozzie along with "a bunch of sickos out there". He wasn't lumping Ozzie in with them. He was saying that if those sickos heard the White Sox' opinion on certain umpires, they may be stupid/crazy enough to do something about it, ala William Ligue.

Jeesh, this has become such a joke it is almost unbearable at this point...

QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Tomorrow is Sunday.. So we may get the Sunday lineup, but its a division game, so we may see the normal crew out there. Big Jim has been more effective against lefties this year anyway, but he needs a day off. Wouldnt be too shocked to see Aj get a day off too, Ozzie seems to like getting him a day off whenever he has an excuse. Aj had the day off Friday night. Can't see him getting another one this soon. Additionally, I doubt they sit Jimmy tomorrow simply because he finally got a big hit Saturday afternoon and probably want to get him right back out there... I think we'll see the same lineup we've been seeing, with Quentin, Uribe, Swisher and the rest of the crew. -
QUOTE (G&T @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 09:16 PM) I watched some highlights from ESPN, Floyd's curveball was sick. Yeah, the one you saw is probably the one to Cabrera that was just filthy. The good thing about Floyd's curveball was that when he missed with it he missed so badly (high and inside) that the hitters couldn't do anything with it. If he can continue to throw that pitch for a strike, along with that nasty changeup he seemed to be featuring today, he's going to be extremely difficult to hit.

I thought the article had good intentions but then never really got to the point. I think the author was definitely on to something, but was more interested in making some good jokes at the expense of Riley and Simmons than in really exploring why it is these writers have failed us. Could have had a lot more substance... -

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 11, 2008 -> 09:02 PM) He got tossed....Ozzie needs to step in there and get tossed before Thome does. Oh well, probably makes our offense better right now. Hah, Fathom...there was no one keeping Thome from getting tossed tonight. Ozzie was trying to hold him back and Thome was just moving him out of the way like a horse shakes a fly off his back to get to that umpire. I've never seen Thome so angry as he was tonight...I was worried he was actually going to bodyslam that umpire... -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) I don't think the White Sox have any intention to sign Crede unless Fields completely busts in Charlotte. They may have approached him last year when he was hurt hoping for a bargain and perhaps intending to use Fields in a trade for M. Cabrera or something like that, but if Crede has a good year, the Sox will not want to pay him the market rate if they still feel Fields is going to be good. So this is a one year thing. They couldn't get anything of value for him in a trade, but they could get a nice year out of him for $5.1 million, which would be better than a couple of non prospects IMO. Well, that's probably the current plan, but as you well know, that could very well change should this team be in contention come July... -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 01:46 PM) The White Sox can't even make an offer. They're prohibited by union rules from approaching Joe without going through Boras, they've approached Boras and tried to make an offer and were rebuffed. What else can they do? I'm not saying they would circumvent Boras. I'm saying if they made Joe an offer along the lines of 4/44 or something, he may take it even though Boras would advise against it. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 01:06 PM) If it was a guarantee that Joe's back wouldn't be a problem in the future (like, say, the way a broken leg or a torn ACL heals) and of course if he wasn't a Boras client I would have no qualms about bringing Joe back. But that's not the case. Not to sound like a broken record, but I firmly believe that Joe would put Boras in his place should he get a fair offer from the White Sox. -
So much for the first Cuban matchup ever....

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 11:12 AM) The only real thing left that could be done to improve the bench would be to have Alexei be a left handed hitter if possible. Or...as I'm starting to think we should do...swap him with Bourgeois, since JB is listed as a switch hitter. Gives you the left handed versatile bat off the bench, and gets Alexei the AB's he should be getting. Well, I am assuming when Jerry comes back, Alexei will go down, and then you'll have your lefty bat off the bench....(if JO really counts as a "bat").

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 05:08 PM) I don't know the exact odds, but consider that this is the first year after the surgery. A four-year deal would mean the last year would be five years removed from the surgery. None of the college athletes finished their college careers, so they were all done before five years, max. (That would be if they got the surgery before they even got to college -- that doesn't seem common, since the average age of the athletes was over 20 when they got the procedure.) Those don't sound like good odds to me. That's unfortunate...I wasn't aware that he was almost guaranteed to suffer the same pain again.... -

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) It's not a "permanent structural fix", but you'd have to ask ptatc about the details. If I answered that, I'd just be reciting something from WebMD. But what you're saying then is that even a deal on the shorter side, perhaps three or four years, would be a huge risk? -

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) Despite Sabean being a moron, I doubt that he'd deal Lincecum for Fields. And while I'm sure that Beane would love to deal Harden for a player who isn't made of glass, I wouldn't want to give up my future 3B for him (unless Crede has inked an extension). I agree. But that doesn't mean they might not take back Fields and a pitcher for Lincecum, such as Floyd, should he put up a decent first half. All in all, I tend to agree that getting a young stud starter for a package of Fields is probably out of our reach...but it's fun to speculate. -

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:52 PM) The only offseason rumor involving Lincecum (that I know of) was Rios-for-Lincecum. That's taking into account the concerns about Lincecum's durability -- if he makes it strong through to the deadline (which is the only way the Sox would want him), his value only increases. I don't think the Sox have enough. And no matter what happens with Crede this year, it won't mean that he's been proven healthy. The injury he had tends to recur. Signing him is a huge risk no matter how he produces. I'm not sure about that. From everything I've read, the surgery should pretty much take care of the back pain. And I'm not exactly certain who it is that has had this injury that you are comparing Joe to. -

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) So, do you have any particular young pitcher in mind? IF the Sox can come to terms with Crede before the deadline, I might be willing to take a risk on a high-priced dinosaur like Smoltz. Well, Lincecum has been mentioned, Harden has been mentioned. It's really a case of how the season develops though. You have to see who is in contention, who is not in contention... Taking a quick look though, some teams that may need a 3b now or in the future include: Anaheim, Baltimore, Cleveland, Minnesota, Oakland, Seattle, Texas, Toronto, Atlanta, Florida, Houston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis. -

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:18 PM) If a team want to dumps salary (like, say, the Astros want to unload Oswalt), I'd have no problem dealing Fields and some middle-tier prospects. But I don't want some old, injury-prone guy (Pedro, Kenny Rogers) who may or may not be healthy in October. Oh, I couldn't agree more. Not even sure I would want Oswalt.... I'm talking putting a package together for a young pitcher. Assuming you deal Fields, you have to account for the money you are spending if you are keeping Crede around, which makes getting a pre-arb player fairly important. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) My manlove for Carlos Quentin is bordering on infatuation. Even though he looks like he's trying to hump a small horse when he's in the batter's box?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 02:04 PM) Ugh, you should have taken my advice and just read the site. I am in favor of the player who helps the team the most, ive said that repeatedly. I even have a pic of Crede as my avatar, if you'd like I can attach a pic of me in my Crede Jersey. And yes you should have been called a moron for that trade proposal because its riduclous, so I did. Fields and Anderson wouldnt be able to net anything of more value to the Sox than what they bring to this organization in payroll flexibility, a replacement starter next year and a 4.5 tool reserve outfielder. Its actually a very basic concept and outside of your xbox/8th grade world, its pretty much basic business 101. Rock, I understand what you're saying here, but it's just not the dire situation you're suggesting it is. We've got big money coming off the books after 09' (Dye, Contreras, Dotel, Thome (assuming they pick up his option next year)). There is plenty of money to spend in 2010' and Konerko comes off the books after that season. There is no reason that someone such as Crede couldn't be re-signed and considering we have Quentin/Swisher at club-friendly contracts, dealing Anderson would do no harm to the organization other than perhaps trading away a player who never was allowed to fully show his potential here. -

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 01:58 PM) Given Thome's fragile health and Dye's age, I'd say that having a cheap Plan B slugger is a pretty big asset. What happens if the Sox are in first place in the last week of September and Thome pulls a hammy or ribcage muscle? And I foresee the Sox saving $10 million by buying out Thome's contract next year, so that opens up a roster spot. I'm sure that Fields could competently play a corner outfield position, and that would allow Dye to move to DH. Plus, the core of their team (Paulie, Thome, Dye, Crede, Cabrera, Buehrle, Javy, AJ) are either past their prime or nearing the end of it. While winning now is important, they desperately need to get younger and have very little in their farm system at this moment. In that situation, you don't want to trade away cheap, major-league-ready talent with significant upside unless you're getting something really special in return. If I were KW, I'd stand pat with this squad as long as they're playing relatively well. Yeah, this is not lost on me. But what if we are 3 games up on Cleveland on July 28th and our sp is struggling a bit?
