  1. Their defense is franchise-history bad. Cutler will mope around and be average at best. Jeffrey seems to be injured more than they are letting on. Forte isn't getting any younger. If this team wins 5 or more games, Fox deserves coach of the year consideration.
  2. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:58 AM) Because then they'd be persecuting a Christian who is just following her faith. http://www.themoreheadnews.com/davis-facin...04eda149f7.html I guess the county attorney's did file a complaint and sent it to the AG's office. They're also claiming the county can't do anything else and it's up to the state.
  3. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_...-09-01-08-52-48 Apparently the lawyers don't want her to go to jail. They want her to pay money damages. I wonder why. Also it's weird that she stopped issuing marriage licenses all together. Two straight couples were also denied licenses. Pretty screwed up situation.
  4. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:39 AM) Need legal experts to weigh in here: Do the couples who are getting denied licenses have grounds for a civil suit for damages? If so, isn't it in the county's best interests to find somebody to issue the licenses if she won't? It seems that, by doing nothing, the county is passively supporting her. Yeah you would think. Where are the other county officials? Why aren't they stepping in to put some pressure on her? Or even the state. Surely they'd have some recourse against the county if she continues to refuse to do her job.
  5. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:22 AM) That's why state legislatures meet every year, because times change and laws become outdated. I guess. I don't know that that's very high on the priority list of what needs to get done though. I doubt there's a lot of 40 year olds marrying 16 years olds out there.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:12 AM) 1) that's what incognito mode is for 2) I have a hard time imaging a situation where a 16-17 year old prostitute isn't being exploited and deserves scare-quotes. I think it's more likely than not that they are being exploited, but I remember 16-17 year old girls in my high school who acted 30. They knew exactly what they were doing and why. Could I imagine a scenario where one of those girls would accept tens of thousands for one night? Yep. Doesn't mean it's right, but I think they're less of a victim than 9 year olds. They, most likely, at least had a say in the matter.
  7. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:15 AM) I'm sorry, that's just messed up. Did the people who passed these laws not have 16-17 year old daughters? Back in the day when you lived to 40 or 50, getting married and having kids by 17-18 was very common. It's a more recent trend to wait so long to be married/have children.
  8. Yeah a lot of states it's 16, some including Illinois and New York are 17. All of Canada is 16. I also did an icky google search which is now in my history.
  9. That Concussion movie trailer looks pretty terrible (and Jesus am I tired of that topic). Who gave that the green light?
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 31, 2015 -> 11:08 AM) The whole idea of statutory rape and age of consent laws is that children can't legally consent. And it ignores the pretty obvious exploitation of prostitutes and especially underage prostitutes that sort of negates any idea of consent anyway. eta: I was referring to the 16/17 year olds. They may be exploited, they may not be. We really don't know.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 31, 2015 -> 01:06 PM) Mt. McKinley officially renamed to Denali over the weekend why?
  12. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 31, 2015 -> 08:11 AM) By whom? Well, right, that's the problem. If all of his "victims" were prostitutes there's probably not a link. But if there are more victims - and I wouldn't doubt there are - and they have links to some Subway event or initiative, and Subway knew about Fogle's actions but did nothing, I think that'd be a pretty solid case.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 28, 2015 -> 01:27 PM) bad link Oops, here's another: http://sploid.gizmodo.com/the-us-and-south...r-lo-1727237890
  14. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 28, 2015 -> 03:47 PM) Didn't he also sign the abusive women's basketball coach? Wasn't that all proven to be not true? Also, how does Cubit get a pass here? He's the OC. How do the OC and DC not know about players playing hurt or not getting treatment?
  15. I'm sure Thomas' fate is tied to Cubit. If Cubit gets them to the post season he may be retained for another couple of years, along with Thomas. If it's a whole new search, how can Thomas still be the guy running the show? He's got one foot out the door himself.
  16. Also great timing with two big basketball recruits on campus.
  17. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 28, 2015 -> 01:53 PM) Oh despite this I still wouldn't be so sure that anything really bad happened. I mean it may have, but knowing our how our board operates, he may have just used the f word at practice once too. I could see this as being a reactionary move to make the school look tough on any perceived inappropriate/illegal behavior by a coach. I'd also bet that whatever Beckman did, unless it's totally egregious ("Torn ACL? Pssh...GET ON THE FIELD!"), he's doing the same thing that every other coach in the country is doing. Pressuring guys to play hurt or delay treatment probably happens daily.
  18. Not good. Here comes a class action lawsuit against the school if there are legit findings.
  19. Not really sure where to put this, but it's pretty bad ass: http://sploid.gizmodo.com/the-us-and-south...r-lo-1727237890
  20. Sounds like a pretty great civil case against Subway to me.
  21. http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/28/us/virginia-...dams/index.html Boy, a sense of entitlement and a perception that everything said to him was racist/discriminatory. Where oh where did he get those crazy ideas???
  22. "17. Rose started asking Jane to perform masturbatory acts while on Skype, which made her uncomfortable. Rose would get upset and berate her for refusing, so Jane stopped Skyping with him. a. When Jane confided in her friends about her discomfort with his request, they told her that it was normal for couples to do that. Jane began to believe that there was something wrong with the prudish way she was raised. Jane was brought up in a traditional, religious household where a woman should have sex with only one person - her spouse. She had not masturbated before and thought only guys did it and coudl not imagine herself doing it." Riiiiiiiiighhhhhhttt. Innocent little princess who just happens to start f***ing an NBA player. So pure and innocent i'm sure.
  23. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 26, 2015 -> 10:26 PM) Are you dense? First, the fact that a dual homicide was conducted live on-air is obviously the story. Second of all, an alternative murder video was posted on social media just before the assailant committed suicide. This is a completely f***ing unique, terrifying, modern crime that should be defined as part of history. I guess I don't see it as all that unique, except for the live broadcast factor. People have committed crimes and posted the videos online before (ISIS says welcome to the last 3 years). We've had horrific, cold blooded murders before. Obviously the live broadcast video really hooked people. but it always amazes me when X crime happens and there's a major response, but other similar crime happens elsewhere and we don't think twice about it. Case in point: the shootings in Chicago that happen on a regular basis. I'm not saying it's not horrible or tragic. It's just interesting how video can really ramp up these events. It makes it 10000 times more "real."
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 08:40 AM) I don't think we'll see copycats of news crew murders, but I'm guessing cat is out of bag for Gopro during shooting sprees. If there's one thing people with guns love it's taking pictures and video of themselves using guns. Was only a matter of time. Except this guy wasn't a big lover of guns. He just bought the gun he used a month ago. This was clearly a deranged fellow wanting to settle a supposed score and he wanted attention for doing it. Sadly, he got what he wanted.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2015 -> 04:50 PM) Involving the media itself, it would have been a big deal. That's probably true. But the reaction from everyone else, on Twitter for example, wouldn't have been the same.
