Pretty amazing how this season started as "Rory is unstoppable," turned into "Spieth the next Tiger Woods/superstar," and is now "Jason Day, destroying the competition."

Soxtalk Republican Primary
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Sep 21, 2015 -> 03:01 PM) Does Kasich have any particular traits/policies that people like? Or is he just appealing because he seems like a reasonably nice/reasonably intelligent/reasonably sane/reasonably moderate person in a field full of people who aren't? Two words: budget surplus. Did it at the federal level, did it at the state level. He's also yet to say anything crazy, he's not on the anti-gay marriage/repeal Obamacare/overturn-Roe v. Wade platform (lost battles, time to move onto other things), and he just comes off as a sensible guy that can get stuff done. He doesn't talk in emotional platitudes. He seems to focus on his accomplishments, not other people's failings.

Soxtalk Republican Primary
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 21, 2015 -> 01:00 PM) Just for fun, the NSS rankings of preference among current GOP candidates... Kasich Rubio Christie Paul Fiorina Bush *large gap* Pataki Jindal Walker Graham Cruz Carson Santorum Trump Huckabee I'm more or less in agreement with you here. I'd love to see Trump win just so the whole system gets blown up. He won't be able to effectuate any actual change (read: harm). He'll alienate the GOP as much as the left within the first week of office. Kasich seems like the boring pick that has an outside chance of actually doing something worthwhile. Rubio is probably the most electable. I'd be happy if those two were the ticket, in either role.

Late to the party as usual with movies, but I just finished Mad Max: Fury Road. Great movie, awesome action, blah blah, all the usual accolades. Here's a question though: if the main bad guy is hoarding his wives/trophies, and all of his soldiers are boys, why is Charlize Theron's character a lieutenant in his army? And why is she given control over his greatest war machine?

If that's not a catch, I don't know what a catch is anymore. He had the ball in his hands, tucked it, took 2 steps, rotated in the air, fell on his back and then the ball popped out. WTF.

2015-2016 NFL Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) Atlanta has won a lot. Their last conference title was in the late 90's. Going to the playoffs isn't winning, not to the extent that you become a hated team that gets viewers/readers no matter what happens to them, good or bad. That's where the Patriots are now. Everyone either loves or hates them. Either way, you watch and root for something to happen to them. Everyone has an opinion. That's why these stories remain stories.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 12:19 PM) But at the same time, if everyone else is cheating, all you're doing is playing at a disadvantage if you don't try some tricks of your own. Exactly. At least with steroids, if everyone can do it, you're on an even playing field. Letting franchises go wild with ways to skirt the rules doesn't make an equal playing field. Now it's about how much people want to get away with before getting caught. Oh wait, like college football! Big programs cheat non stop. Because they cheat they win. Because they win they're popular. Because they're popular they get big TV ratings. Because they get big TV ratings, they're rarely caught. And when they are caught, it's usually a minimal slap on the wrist for fear that TV ratings will drop.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 12:17 PM) They really haven't gotten away with that much. A lot of it is blown way out of proportion. Falcons admitted that they pumped in fake noise at home games, probably a bigger deal then anything Tom Brady ever did with Footballs. No one cares about the Falcons because they aren't the good team everyone wants to hate. Yeah but that's the point: if the cheating is helping you win, you're winning because you're cheating. If the Falcons had won a lot and it was attributable to fan noise (which is far less important than, you know, STEALING PLAYBOOKS), I think it would be just as much of a PR storm.

European Refugee Crisis
Taking away money/aid from people who are already here and in need of it doesn't seem any better from a moral stand point than not wanting new refugees in.

If there was any doubt about it being a homicide (or any evidence indicating it was a suicide), would they really go through with that massive public funeral and ceremony?

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 09:41 AM) Antonio Brown is very very good. Darrius Heyward-bey? Still an idiot. Fun game last night. Pitt offense looks like it's going to be rolling again this year. Pitt actually looked more impressive to me overall. They just had 3-4 boneheaded plays that gave the Pats/Gronk easy TD's. I doubt they'll just not guard guys in future games.

2015-2016 NFL Thread
The Score this morning said that when the Steelers complained, the NFL went to check out the Patriots headsets (and to tell them to take it off until the problem was solved), but every time they got near the Patriots sideline the problem magically resolved. However, on the Dan Patrick show, this was never brought up, and Patrick was saying that it's the NFL that runs the wireless equipment, so it's on them, not the Patriots, for not sorting it out or making the headsets unavailable for both sides.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 12:25 PM) Yeah, it pretty much does. Right, because you believe that every negative comment someone says about anyone/anything makes them the worst person ever. Most people aren't so cynical.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 12:20 PM) This only makes sense if you can point to Fiorina making fun of trump's hair. If anything it cuts against what you're saying because other people making fun of Trump's hair isn't an excuse for sexist insults against Fiorina. You're not pointing out a double standard. You're attempting to excuse Trump being an asshole to a rival female candidate and insulting her looks by pointing to other people making fun of Trump's comb-over. I think you can call the guy an asshole, unprofessional, un-Presidential, etc. and I'd agree with you. But the fact that he makes fun of a woman's looks doesn't instantly make him a sexist pig either.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 10, 2015 -> 12:13 PM) Well, that's really the key difference. Women are routinely judged much more than men on their physical appearance, and Trump outright said he wouldn't vote for her because of the way she looks (before later backpedaling like the bold truth-teller that he is). That tu quoque doesn't really address the issue, though. edit: also, what Crimson said. This is the current front-runner of the GOP primary tossing around insults about anyone whom he sees as the opposition left and right. edit2: it will be just as s***ty of him if/when he starts making Christie fat jokes. The guy is just an asshole and a bully with the maturity of a 5th grader. Christie is fat and I think it's 100% ok for him to call him out on it. Gluttony should not be a key trait of the President of the United States.

Pointing out a double standard when it comes to offensive speech proves how ridiculous we've become with what is/is not offensive. I guarantee you there are people out there who think Trump looks like an idiot and therefore wouldn't vote for him.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 10:28 AM) New font, bigger center court logo, removed the basketball from the center logo, added Chicago stars to baseline, changed the wood color, changed the color of the foul line, 3-point line, etc. Geez, good catches. I had looked at the Zach Lowe article on court designs a couple of days ago but didn't really see anything different.
