White People - A Documentary
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) And the next example of white privilege presented in this thread is asserting that it doesn't happen any more. Maybe we should educate our kids better on what kinds of additional privileges they get because of their skin color. You guys are the textbook examples of why. You just don't have to face up to that...because...well you knwo. Nah, let's blame 18 year olds for it and make them cry and feel responsible. Oh, and be racist while doing it (but it's cool guys cause he's not a white dude!) A MUCH better plan.

White People - A Documentary
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 01:07 PM) So it's not your fault, you can't be called upon to act to do anything to correct that problem, yet somehow it doesn't continue because of anything you do. And there's the beautiful contradiction that is white privilege. It doesn't exist because of anything you do but you can't be asked to do anything about it, you just get to enjoy the benefits. Fixing it is other people's problem. They just need to be better, after all. I can't change my skin color. I can't change what happened in the past. So, yeah, there's not much I can do about "being white" in 2015 America.

White People - A Documentary
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 12:53 PM) No, that's the "read your own words and actually pause to check your own privilege" response. I, and most sane white people, don't deny there's a certain privilege to being white. However, it's not of my doing nor does it continue because of anything I do. So to blame me for it or make me apologize for it is bulls***.

White People - A Documentary
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 12:22 PM) I know how bad would it be if large parts of this country regularly made minority groups feel bad about being the race that they were born? That'd be truly awful. Ah yes, the "they do it too so it's ok for us!" response.

White People - A Documentary
But the documentary blames those white kids. WTF did they do but win the birth lottery? Nothing. It's a movie about making white kids feel bad about being white. That's bulls***.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 12:08 PM) Some of that can be offset by Mirotic being better and the bench being used better and the offense being better in general. My bigger worry out of what you mentioned though is that I'll believe Gasol can be as good as he was last year when I see it again, at some point he will actually get old. Yeah, that's true, although if he can set screens and hit open 18 footers he still has a lot of value. One issue I've been thinking about is the Bulls are pretty much the anti-small ball team. Their three bigs - Noah, Gasol and Taj - are pretty terrible against a run and gun team. I remember watching the Warriors game last year thinking they'd have no shot in a 7 game series. They'd be spent after 2 games.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 12:03 PM) Okay, I can see that part of it for sure. But the idea that a player can cancel a verbal committment prior to the ink being able to be put to paper seems like a no brainer. Yes, he should have that option. But it's still kinda s***ty. Your word doesn't mean much if you flip from a commitment. And it's especially s***ty when in the NBA free agency situation the Mavs are out making other deals to finalize the roster and/or are refraining from going after guys because they have his commitment.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 11:59 AM) They will add another player, just not sure who. I also don't have a problem with it. We were the 2nd best team in the East and only had like 17 regular season games with the starting lineup in tact. And yes, I say we were the 2nd best and that was fairly obvious in the playoffs. I was incredibly pissed we lost to Cleveland and a lot of guys on our side sucked and Cleveland was playing really hurt but we also had our own issues and had guys who were playing hurt too. Both are probably going to be trends (Noah / Taj / Rose are injury prone) and on Cleveland's side you could make the case that Kyrie and Love are as well. Bulls were still a technical foul call from having total control of that series (and/or a Lebron buzzer beater) so while we'd all love to be the heavy favorites, we still are an extremely competitive team who will be top 5 in Vegas odds, I presume. Behind Spurs / Warriors / Cavs. Not sure if there will be anyone else we will be behind (maybe OKC?). Don't underestimate the Heat and the Bucks next season. Unless Noah is healthy and Rose is a better version of what we say last year, the Bulls are a middle of the pack team in the east. I'd guess 3-4 seed when it's all said and done. Rose will never be Rose, Noah is officially done and on the decline, and they won't go balls to the wall for meaningless regular season games like they have been the last few years.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 11:19 AM) Call me crazy but I don't see anything wrong with what Jordan did. It's fine to change your mind when you're not bound to your decision, but it's also pretty childish and not professional to ignore and actively evade the Mavs/Cuban. Have a grown up conversation about it.

White People - A Documentary
Finally, all those who suffer from white guilt have an outlet! Jesus. Here's the thing: you can, as a white person, appreciate and acknowledge that white people are privileged in a lot of ways and have certainly been MORE privileged than other races throughout history. However, (1) all "white" people are not the same. Some "white" people are not privileged and haven't experienced the same privilege as other whites; (2) whites in 2015, especially teenagers and young adults that this "documentary" is shaming, have nothing to do with the "privilege" and realistically are the LEAST privileged white people there has been in this country. The whole thing is a disgrace, but I'm sure some people will praise it as some amazing achievement in social commentary. edit: oh, and how is this not racist? The non-white guy is targeting white people specifically and chastising them. Can you imagine if he made a "Black People" documentary?

Yeah how would Mark Cuban not know that? You're going to give a dude 80 million but you don't know where he lives? No chance.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:36 PM) I don't believe you can. I'm not a lawyer but from what I recall from my business law class, certain agreements can be verbal and binding in a court of law, while others can't be binding. I remember something about a dollar threshold and year threshold (also things like real estate, IIRC, had to no matter what be in writing). I thought no verbal agreement in excess of 1 year can be binding. I also presume that the offered contract far exceeds any threshold on $'s. So bottom line, even if Mark wanted to say it was a verbal agreement, the actual agreement would be completely illegal and unenforceable. Note: I'll let one of our attorney's blow my argument up but I think generally speaking I'm correct. I remember MYLEGS from Bar/Bri. No contracts for: M - marriage Y - year length L - land E - executor (of estates) G - goods (over $500 I think?) S - surety

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 01:42 PM) Apparently he is talking legal action for tampering. the grand offseason of Doc River, GM extraordinaire, continues Is it really tampering though when no one has signed anything? I think this is more an unwritten rule than anything else. And Broussard (I think) reported that Jordan called Doc and told him he was unsure. So i'm sure the defense will be he reached out to me. Also, if he leaves, Mavs fans should refer to to him as IDKWTI. #Illini #sourgrapes #EricGordonIsStillAPOS

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 7, 2015 -> 11:26 PM) Not sure the best place for this, but in NYC for a few days on business and checked out the Comedy Cellar tonight. Aziz was in the audience but didn't preform, and we got a surprise set by John Mulaney, who wrote the Steffon character on SNL along with a ton of others. Was a great show, and was like 12 bucks. Mulaney has a stand-up special on Netflix that's really good.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2015 -> 04:06 PM) See the problem is...everything you mentioned was pretty much BS as a "Scandal". Some of them are "poor optics", but they're labeled as "scandals" even when they're not. Just because they were never charged in the Whitewater scandal doesn't mean there wasn't something going on there. People in direct contact with them were convicted. That's a legit scandal. Her foundation and timely donations are shady political moves. Can't really be a scandal when it's all done in public, but it's still fishy. The e-mail scandal is a legit scandal. She shouldn't be a candidate for that incompetence alone. Benghazi was overblown and more PR dumbness than scandal.

The Democrat Thread
Given some of the scandals though, from Whitewater to foundation donations, to the email scandal, isn't some of that explanation self explanatory? She's got some dirt on her and everyone knows it. Of course reporters want to be the one that finds it. And of course Republicans are chomping at the bit because the country has been told for nearly two decades that she'll be the first female president.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 6, 2015 -> 03:40 PM) Judge Judy. She's got longevity. She also makes more than the rest of them combined a year. Her contract is 50+ million a year, and that doesn't include the money she makes from her own production company.

Spurs get West on a veteran minimum deal. He gave up 12 million to chase a ring. I really hope for his sake he gets some kind of executive job title with the Spurs after he retires. Spurs now the clear favorites to win it all. Parker-Green-Kawi-Aldridge-Duncan, Manu and West off the bench. Patty Mills still an option too. Good luck Lebron.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 2, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) Say what you want about Donald Trump. He's not backing down. Most public figures who make statements that are over-exaggerated in the media and cause boycotts/consternation, etc., simply fade away. Not Trump and one other man, Rush Limbaugh. They survive controversial statements because they fight back. Truthfully, what did Trump say that was so bad? He's against illegal immigrants committing crimes. Limbaugh has said some wild stuff. He's survived, too. I kind of hope Trump is our next president. He has charisma and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. This controversy is overblown. He's right, the people disassociating with him are weak. Calling all illegal immigrants from Mexico criminals and rapists isn't a smart thing to say. The outrage is (shock!) overblown, but at least it's somewhat warranted. The piling on from random places (mattresses? really?) is hilarious though. Never under estimate the PR bump from a controversy!
