This Chicago is Not My Kind of Town
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) Even Italy only has a fourth of the gun murders per capita that the USA does. You're literally more likely to die by gun homicide in the USA than you are in Palestine (we're a lot less likely to get killed by missiles, though, so there's always that). Twice as likely to die by gun homicide here than in the Congo. No two places are directly comparable, but we are a buttload more violent (particularly, violent w/ guns) than anywhere else that fancies itself as "developed" or "modern" in the world. Our loose gun laws are the very reason that people can say gangs are some strange, incomprehensible, not worth including in any estimate thing because they just always have guns. But we also have 10 times the number of gang members and gang violence accounts for like 80% of the violent crime. You can't just ignore that. Take away the gangs and we're a pretty non-violent bunch, especially in the last couple of decades.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:43 PM) If you had to Choose...Taj and Butler for Wiggins or Taj and Butler for Love (ignore that the cap doesn't work in 1 case) which would you do from the Bulls perspective? I'd take Love assuming he's going to resign. The Bulls' window to win is the next 3-4 seasons.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) LOL, but adding Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler to a talentless Wolves team that doesn't have Kevin Love anymore would? Reading is fundamental: But, in year one, Taj and Butler as two of your starters will make your team better than just Wiggins. Wiggins' offensive game is still a work in progress. It's going to take a few years for him to be a really good player, and really there's no guarantee he will be. That's why if Flip is in "win now" mode - which I think is posturing or else he's incredibly stupid - maybe that's not so outlandish after all.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:08 PM) My cousin is a Chicago cop and threw out an email to the family that he had to take an FBI weapons course and was being sent to the West Side to fight the gangs, after years of being based in the Gold Coast. My brother fired back some statistics from Switzerland which is where he lives, where 11 people are murdered per year in the entire country. Guess what Switzerland doesn't have though...

Yeah, I mean Greg shouldn't be such a woman about these things, but at the same time it's f***ed up that 80 people get shot and 14 killed in a 48 hour period.

It's odd though that Windhorst was also a contributor. He's in Lebron's camp.

The one positive (cuz hey, let's whip ourselves into a frenzy one more time this off season) is that Flip wants to win now and Wiggins isn't going to do that for him. Taj and Butler and some draft picks let's him sorta do that and plan for the future. Still not sure that's getting them to the playoffs though. I find it hard to believe they'd part with McDermott or Mirotic so soon. Taj and Butler and Dunleavy and picks are the only possibilities I would think.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 12:48 PM) I would guess the Bulls are just trying to make sure that Cleveland gets rid of both Wiggins and Bennett in a trade? I have no idea, but the Bulls clearly can't beat the cavs offer. Doesn't really help the Bulls though. Is Bennett really that much of a threat?

What percentage of the people in the world are good?
I went with the low side of 70%. Maybe that's too harsh, I dunno. You can have flaws and be a good person, but there are some people who are just miserable and hateful and I would consider them "bad." Add in criminals and I think you've hit a decent chunk of the population.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) This is really the perfect encapsulation of how wrong your position is. Individual Mlb managers and owners weren't racist for propagating a system that deliberately and openly excluded black players. This would be a better argument if in the last few years NFL owners were open about not wanting a gay player. I can't think of any that have openly excluded them the same way as MLB owners given that Sam is the first to come out. As it stands you're finding 31 owners guilty (and anyone else who dares consider the consequences of drafting Sam in addition to his football skills) for failing to act in the way you want them to act. I've said I can understand why Dungy is being criticized for his comments given his history, but I still think you can be an LGBT/Sam supporter and still not want to draft him because of everything that comes with it. That doesn't make you a bigot, coward, or a terrible person. It makes you someone who just doesn't want to deal with something that you have absolutely no obligation to deal with if you don't want to.

At some point aren't the Bulls out of roster spots? Rose, Butler, McDermott, Gasol, Noah, Taj, Mirotic, Hinrich, Dunleavy, Snell, the other 2nd rounder, Brooks...Marion? Or is the choice between Marion and Brooks?

I hadn't heard of that. What a mess. But hey, at least it's all limited to like 3 neighborhoods, amiright? #suburbswithnocrime

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:27 PM) But dungy didn't say he wouldn't draft him because he was going to do an I'll-advised reality show that is obvious personal distraction. It was more generally his being gay that was an unacceptable distraction for him. Plenty of players have all sorts of personal distractions, but only "being gay" is a bridge too far for some. And plenty of players are dropped once the distraction overcomes their value on the field.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) An awful lot of your typical bulls*** e.g. weird broadly anti-Christian stuff you're assigning to me, Your whole third point. You seem to be incapable of a good faith understanding of a position you don't agree with. The anti-Christian stuff was called an analogy. You bring those into debates from time to time. The third point is exactly what you told me at the start of this. "imagined issues" I believe is the phrase you used. edit: and repeatedly putting "distractions" in quotes.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:20 PM) Team had every right to quash that legitimate distraction. It was a personal distraction that would take away from the player's ability focus on football. Some s*** heads protesting his being gay doesn't approach that level. And if you're an nfl head coach afraid of the media second guessing you, you have zero business being that position anyway. And what if Sam said no, I'm doing the show?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:15 PM) For someone who whines about others putting words in his mouth, jenks sure does love jumping straight to the worst straw man version of what other people are saying pretty quickly. Not sure how I'm doing that based on your responses. You've had ample opportunity to explain yourself, but here are the options you put forward: 1) draft Sam, not a terrible person 2) don't draft Sam for football reasons, not a terrible person 3) distractions don't exist, they're only fabricated by bigots and cowards, so if you don't draft Sam based on his homosexuality and anything else related to that (but still non-football related), you're a bigot and terrible person. What exactly am I missing?

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 09:08 PM) He's an asshole because that's how he comes across in every medium I've ever seen. Maybe he's a great guy in person, who knows. And I'm not a fan of Sam's decision to do the reality show and all that jazz. That's making it about more than football. But if you're the owner of a team you better not think about that non-football stuff or you're a bigot and a coward!
