  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 04:59 PM) You know what, f*** it, I've had holocaust references thrown at me so often, here's one back at people. "I didn't see any Jews getting murdered where I was". Saying that doesn't mean you're a holocaust denier or that you hate Jews and think they're an inferior race. You're simply stating where you lived you didn't see Jews getting murdered. I think you guys should read more into what people don't say. It fits with your narrative that everyone is racist/homophobic/whatever except you, because you care and no one else does.
  2. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 05:55 PM) When Phil Robertson thinks of sin, the first thing that comes to his mind is gay people. That's not being religious, that's wanting an outlet to vent your hate. Homosexual behavior is so far outside of the main aims (and there are sound arguments to be made that it is completely outside the purview of Christian theology) of Christianity that this quote is utterly ridiculous. He doesn't want everyone "to love each other and love God," he wants everyone to think alike. I'm sure that was a context-based answer. They were clearly talking about sex or sexuality or something, since his initial comment was about finding vaginas more attractive than dude's buttholes. But even then we have no idea what precipitated those comments or in what order he made them.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 03:28 PM) No, again, being completely unaware that there was actually a problem at all, so ignorant in the 50's and 60's and yeah, pretty much just racist in 2013. That statement in 2013 is just willful ignorance of the status of African Americans as 2nd class citizens in the Jim Crow era. It's white-washing a pretty horrible but factual history. Wait, when did he say he wasn't aware? Oh right, because he was talking about his PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and wasn't giving a 25 minute stump speech on the severity of racism in Louisiana during the 50's and 60's.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 03:19 PM) You didn't grow up in Jim Crow Louisiana were there was de jure racial oppression, though. And if you had, and you based your entire views of race relations based on what you saw happen in front of you while ignoring the rest of society around you, you'd be just as ignorant. It's actually pretty much a textbook example of racial privilege if you don't even have to consider the realities of racial oppression, only what you personally saw other people exposed to. Again, not caring enough/appreciating the problem for your liking, so, racist.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 03:13 PM) No, in other words, he dismisses very real racism and racial oppression and imagines that African Americans as a whole were happier under Jim Crow and are now suffering thanks to welfare and entitlements. He doesn't care at all because he doesn't even see the blatant, explicit racism of the Jim Crow south. No, you're still not getting. Ignorant racist because he literally dismisses the blatant, widespread de jure racism of the Jim Crow south and romanticizes it as happier times for African Americans, when they'd sing songs all day and wouldn't even complain about the white man, until that awful welfare came along. He completely dismisses the seriousness of the issue. I really can't believe you have a hard time understanding why painting Jim Crow Louisiana as happy fun time when asked a question about racial issues is absurd. He is literally recollecting Uncle Remus as his lived experience in pre-CRA Louisiana. Uncle Remus was pretty damn questionable in 1947, let alone 2013. See my edit above. I can see his personal exposure being limited to the point where he didn't see the problem. And he's not alone in thinking that welfare and entitlements have made mentalities worse for some people.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 03:04 PM) He's giving a quote that essentially dismisses the widespread and systemic racial oppression African Americans faced in this country, particularly in states like Louisiana, in the 50's and 60's. He then follows it with a statement that implies that 'entitlements' and 'welfare' have made it worse for African Americans, and that this is the cause of whatever their current unhappiness is. He is literally saying that they were happier under Jim Crow than they were post-Great Society. If anything, it's a great example of why "color blind" is such a stupid thing. It lets someone who isn't the target of systemic racial oppression be completely and comfortably ignorant of what's happening to everyone around them. edit: more bluntly, every single day Jim Crow America mistreated African Americans. He claims to have not seen direct, immediate racial oppression (I am skeptical!) and from there talks about how happy everyone was. His "color blindness" is just another word for "deep ignorance" Ok exactly. He doesn't sufficiently address the seriousness of the issue. Therefore, (ignorant) racist. edit: and I totally buy it. I grew up in a town of 3,000-5,000 people. We had a token black family or two and NEVER thought twice about it. I moved to the big city later in life and every day there's a story about race. In my personal experience growing up I could say I never saw any issue and that every black person I knew wasn't subjected to discrimination or ill-treatment and seemed perfectly happy.

In other words, he doesn't CARE as much as people like you.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 02:48 PM) It seems to me he was (people used to be more godly; being godly makes you happy; welfare destroyed godliness? I dunno I didn't say it's a coherent one). But it doesn't matter if he was trying to make a broader point or not. The thing about the blues was just straight-up dumb, but the other part is offensive in the same way that Uncle Remus from Song of the South was offensive. He's literally dismissing that blacks in rural Louisiana in the 40's and 50's were racially oppressed and saying that they seemed happy enough to him. If you don't get why it's offensive, I don't know that I could explain it. Well I really don't. I don't expect people to have 100% perfect quotes that sufficiently cover every issue any time a question is asked. He's giving a quote about his experiences in rural Louisiana. It's entirely possible that he is color blind in a sense and being a "white trash" redneck he never had a problem/experienced a problem with whites and poor blacks. He shouldn't have to follow up that statement with "but you know i recognize other people didn't have it so good!!!!"
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) His portrayal of poor rural African Americans in Louisiana as happy-go-lucky people without a care in the world until that damned welfare came along is...problematic at best. It's basically Uncle Remus. Saying that they weren't singing the blues is just straight-up dumb because Louisiana blues music really started developing in the post-war period. It might be dumb, but he wasn't trying to make a bigger point like "black people should stop complaining, i knew a few back in the day and they seemed fine."
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) Deadspin takes aim at Dan Bernstein. http://deadspin.com/derrick-rose-isnt-a-vi...dium=socialflow I side with Bernstein there unfortunately. You can't play the "i'm the greatest and all I want to do is win, no matter the cost" card and then ignore doctors who say you can play because you're worried about your legacy, or b**** about the roster when you're not willing to make a call to help build one. I agree with the comment that said if it wasn't troll/dick Bernstein, that story would have been received positively.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:52 AM) Look at what Robertson actually said. His comments and his tone were not remotely like the Pope's. Honestly, just pretty much standard retrograde homophobia there. I think this is really what got him in trouble: Right and he also said this: And that second quote I seriously don't understand what's wrong with it. It's entirely personal and based on his experiences. If anything he's being disrespectful for equating himself as a poor redneck to a southern black person in the 70's. I can't imagine both lived a great life even if a black person was obviously in a worse position socially.
  12. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:31 AM) Yeah that chick is good. Ginger is just OK. EDIT: Do you have a non airbrushed photo of this chick? Just Google her name. She posts a bunch of crap to facebook you can check out. She's my nice wake-up-to-the-world on Saturday mornings.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) there was the usual silly linkage to bestiality in there, I don't think Pope Francis did that. He listed various sins, also including adultery, alcoholism, etc. But still, his point was the exact same - I don't get it. I don't agree with it. I think it's a sin. But treat people with kindness and love and don't judge them. Let God deal with it. As a pseudo Christian, that's been my belief for a long time.
  14. Can someone explain how what Roberston said was any different than the Pope, who was praised by gay groups and selected as Time's person of the year (for that reason among others)?
  15. Local NBC weather girl Cheryl Scott is hotter:
  16. Must be nice to have super stars that get every f***ing call. Lebron literally pushing guys off of him with one arm and it's a defensive foul. No one will beat the Heat 8 on 5. Oh, and it's f***ing Joey Crawford. God I can't wait until he retires.
  17. I wish the Score would get rid of Hanley. He's awful. Can't speak a, ugh, clear sentence to, ya know, ugh, save his, ugh, life.
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 04:18 PM) Pfft we all know that "nay" means yes.
  19. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) Fair enough. In any event, it's a manufacturer image, just like Larry the Cable Guy. Yeah that's a good comparison. Hey, whatever works. They became millionaires because of it. I'd grow a beard and dress in camo all day too if I got 200k per episode.
  20. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 04:22 PM) At a minimum, their image is manufactured. There are a lot pictures on the internet of them with clean-shaven faces and yuppie clothes. Once they get a tv show, it's giant beards and camo everything. I'd bet their beliefs and comments and personalities are at the very least exaggerated as well. I mean for sure they're playing up the redneck card. But the beards and all that started well before the TV show. I think it all started when they came out with their first hunting DVD.
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) 2 consenting animals should be allowed to do what they want! Judging from the noises coming from the horse, it was not consensual.
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) And yet thousands of straight men do everything in their power to get a girl to have anal/oral sex with them. And then there are some girls who actually prefer it to regular sex. Cant argue taste. Yep. Thousands. Out of how many tens of millions? But I get your point, and I agree. To each his own.
  23. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) Gotta pander to those redneck viewers who actually think their image is real. I think every person who has ever interviewed them has basically concluded that they're 100% real. They're smart business people and so they definitely project an image, but I think their beliefs are absolutely genuine.
  24. http://www.gq.com/entertainment/television...-phil-robertson Can't say I disagree.
  25. I honestly don't think it was that bad. He doesn't look crazy. He looks pissed off and fed up.
