  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 14, 2013 -> 12:19 PM) Why do you suppose that is? What do you suppose women judge men on? Exactly.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 14, 2013 -> 12:18 PM) Yes, that's the choice. Either everything feminine and female is turned into something about sex, or nothing can ever be turned into something about sex ever. Fantastic comprehension, there. That's exactly what you want! You didn't say let's LESSEN the femanization/sexualization of females, you said let's get rid of it entirely. Why the f*** would we do that? Let's pretend human nature and sexuality doesn't exist! That'll solve all of the worlds problems! You're a f***ing joke.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 14, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) No. That would be pretty absurd. Stop objectifying women and judging them based on their looks in virtually every context. Don't sexualize everything feminine or female. i.e., let's all be goo backs.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 14, 2013 -> 11:50 AM) No, you display over and over and over again with your responses that you don't even get what the thing you're rejecting out of hand even is, that you don't understand it on a basic conceptual level. You can only ever respond with these really, really dumb straw men. Wait, I thought all us lefty libs were multicultural, anti-assimilation bastards set on destroying Traditional American culture?!! But that's a pretty good example of you really just not getting it. At all. It'd be one thing if you did and still disagreed, but you don't. The entire concept is to reject a single, perfect standard in favor of acceptance of people with differences. That we don't judge and shame and demean people for not adhering to some standard of beauty or weight or gender norms or whatever. That you keep saying "everyone will be exactly the same!" as a sarcastic dismissal really does tell everyone that you don't understand and that you're proud of the ignorance. You're so afraid of offending anyone (that you like) that you want the entire world to change over it. I, on the other hand, could give two s***s if some morbidly obese kid of a morbidly obese mother has some self esteem issues because a non-morbidly obese cartoon character is projected in a movie. Maybe that'd be good for that morbidly obese family to see what is "attractive" and healthy and what is not. That's my point here. I'm much more accepting of the idea that models that are airbrushed and put on covers of teen magazines is an actual issue worth discussing. Changing a cartoon character aimed at 5-10 year olds? GMAFB.
  5. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ May 14, 2013 -> 11:40 AM) Regardless of what type of parents you are, kids are going to look up to their favorite fictional characters and their favorite athletes. I have great parents, but try as my dad and baseball coaches might, I still thought I should be out on my front foot with my back foot off the ground to drive the ball because that's what Frank Thomas did. Plenty of young girls have issues with bulemia (sp) and anorexia. They can't possibly all have bad parents. I find it hard to believe that we have an epidemic of 5-10 year old girls suffering from bulemia and anorexia.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 14, 2013 -> 11:35 AM) Is there any topic you won't display your incredible ability to not "get it" on? Lol, ditto your assholery. There's a difference between "getting it" and not giving two s***s about it. I clearly don't give two s***s about it on top of finding the entire notion utterly ridiculous. ZOMG THEY CHANGED A CARTOON CHARACTER. LITTLE GIRLS ARE KILLING THEMSELVES IN THE STREET. LET'S START A REVOLUTION. But as I always say, keep fighting the fight. One day you'll have your perfect dream world where everyone is the exact same because then that .00001% you're so worried about won't be offended! Oh what a glorious thought!

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ May 14, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) I like it too. It isn't quite like I thought it would be or wanted it to be, but I enjoy it nonetheless. My problem is it's (1) super cheesy, (2) repetitive (3) all of the characters are terrible. If you watch that show and then immediately watch a good ensemble friends comedy, like New Girl, you'll see how awful it is.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 14, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) I get the issue, but what little girl or boy is going to want to watch the movie about the normal looking boring person? Isn't it human nature to want to portray our heroes as beautiful and strong and brilliant? All cartoon characters should look like this. Although, they're far too skinny and that could create an issue. Let's fatten them up a little bit so as not to leave out the morbidly obese in this country. Honey Boo Boo might get her feelings hurt.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 14, 2013 -> 11:25 AM) The attacks immediately came up over her looks. Women are judged on their looks constantly, men aren't. They might be called out for looking ridiculous (orange roid-heads) but a run-of-the-mill guy isn't going to have his sexual attractiveness criticized or commented on routinely as a part of the story. We also have had serious body-image and self-esteem issues particularly with young women so role models and cultural influences seem pretty relevant. "Parents actually parent[ing]" doesn't magically make social influences disappear. If you teach your kids that cartoons are - gasp! - FAKE and that it's pretend, this shouldn't be an issue. And frankly, if people are going to argue this point seriously, the original drawing wasn't exactly helping young fat girls to handle their body type very well. Look at the mom in that movie and the daughter. Both slim, great hair, facial features, etc.
  10. Breaking: Every Scottish man in America upset that Disney portrayed them as big oafs and buffoons:
  11. Also why is it "parents" upset? Seems to me like it's one female writer for yahoo movies that seems upset. I also, apparently, have been living in the bottom of a loch because I had no idea this happened.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 14, 2013 -> 11:00 AM) It's more of an issue for girls since women are much more likely to be judged on their looks and attractiveness by society than a man. That recent incident with the Miami fan giving Noah the finger is a good example. She was called a dog, ugly, etc., her looks were a primary part of the story, but that probably wouldn't have been the same for a man. I dunno why Disney decided to sex-up this character. Wasn't she supposed to be all woodsy and not super-feminine in that movie? Just seems like an odd move for the character more than anything. The guy next to her was also being hit with a bunch comments for looking orange and roided up. People in Miami look ridiculous on top of being awful sports fans. Much ado about nothing IMO. If parents actually parented, this wouldn't be an issue. There are a bazillion influences on kids and yet they all grow up being affected by some but not others. We've had unrealistic looking princesses from Disney for 50-60 years and yet little girls are still little girls and life goes on.
  13. f***. This. Season. Keep Noah, Deng, Rose, Butler and Belinelli. Gut the roster of everyone else.
  14. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 14, 2013 -> 06:57 AM) So I guess it was just routine matter that unapproved applications got sent to a liberal blog along with all their info on them? Just another low level employee? http://www.propublica.org/article/irs-offi...nfidential-docs This kind of abuse of power should frighten you as well. Instead you brush it off as a simple 'mistake' or someone just trying to take a shortcut that had 'unintended results'. And again, despite the fact that senior officials were aware of this stuff back in 2011, they were denying it happened (or was still happening) in 2012. If this simple "oh yeah we were just doing our due diligence as we are required by law to do" explanation was legit, they wouldn't have denied anything, they would have used that defense at the start.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 14, 2013 -> 07:33 AM) It wasn't ok if/when the Bush administration did things that weren't legal, or questionable at best, and it's not ok when the Obama administration does it, either. Anyone defending either are the problem this country faces. Stupid people electing bad leaders, and then defending their bad decisions and blaming everyone else for everything. And that was my point. Bush is the worst president ever for reasons X, Y and Z, and yet Obama has probably maintained 75% of those same policies and is the liberal/progressive hero. It's ridiculous.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 13, 2013 -> 01:30 PM) My response goes something like this..."Please for God's sake investigate Priorities USA too!" Yeah, I'll admit the IRS had a difficult line there, but it's still rather obvious that it purposefully and intentionally went after conservative groups only. And the senior officials lied initially about when they became aware of it. In other Obama-is-the-Bestest-President-Ever news, can you imagine the uproar this would have caused if it were Bush? http://bigstory.ap.org/article/govt-obtain...e-records-probe
  17. Man I will be pissed because I passed up tickets to this game.
  18. So, I've seen Friedell and KC Johnson reporting Deng and Hinrich are out. But no word on Rose yet with 1.5 hours to game time. MAYBE HE'S COMING BACK?!
  19. So, are people really not worried that an administration used the IRS to muscle groups it didn't like? Isn't that, I dunno, Nixon-esque?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 13, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) Am I the only one here who watches Veep? Such a good show. I'm surprised I never see anyone mention it in this thread. My wife and I keep saying we're going to try it but never get around to it. Same with Justified. I think we've watched the first 5-6 episodes about 3 times now, and always end up forgetting about it.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 10, 2013 -> 02:00 PM) From Time, 1941: Hey, it's helpful to know that Chinese men don't grow mustaches very well and Japanese men laugh loudly at the wrong time.
  22. Is Derrick Rose playing? And do we know the officials for the game yet?
  23. Ugh, who chose Hangover III? The first was so overrated (ok, not great) and the second was atrocious.
  24. I think reviewers treat books a lot like reviewers treated Lost. You throw enough s*** in there and someone will make weird connections that were never intended, but the author will take credit for looking like a genius.
  25. Did anyone read the Jack London books? Call of the Wild obviously, and White Fang. I was also big into Gary Paulsen in Junior High/High School. Hatchet was one and there was a sequel. About a teenager that is caught out in the middle of nowhere after a plane crash. Similarly when I was younger I really enjoyed The Island of the Blue Dolphins, which is basically the same story but a young hawaiian girl. Now that I think about it, kind of odd that I was into so many isolation/survivor books. I also remember an awesome series of like 5-6 books I read in junior high about a guy going from high school baseball through the big leagues. I have no idea what it was called though. I'll have to try and find them. Edit: dammit I accidentally deleted my initial post.
